likins says purchase imminent by darren maloney the five areas of activities approved by the board of trustees for housing in the jewish community center building were chosen because they have high potential to be self-supporting and are also concerned in the reorganization of computing space in packard lab audit orium according to eric ottervik vice president for administration and planning activities pertaining to the manufac turing systems engineering mse graduate program the institute for robotics the department of industrial engineering the energy research cen ter and the small business center are the only uses that may take place in the building now being called packard lab west he said the only kind of activities that can go in this building are those that can raise capital themselves he said at monday's faculty meeting univer sity president peter likins announced that the university was close to signing the purchasing contract with the brith sholom congregation he explained that . getting trustee approval for the pur chase involved some difficulty he comm by tony coppola university president peter lik ins announced at monday's faculty meeting that the signing of the con tract for the purchase of the brith sholom jewish community center is imminent he also announced for what uses the building on the corner of west packer and brod head avenues would be used likins said that the building was purchased under the condition that certain activities are enacted there to raise funds for rennova tion he noted that the only uses for the building approved by the university board of trustees is to house the activities of robotics manufacturing systems engineer ing the small business center industrial engineering and the research energy center see jewish page 9 sources he noted that the trustees were not only looking at acquiring costs but also operating cost after renovation he cited the mse program having been largely funded by two grants from the international business machines corp ibm one of 2 million specifi cally for mse and another for equipment indirectly concerning the program presently there are 14 graduate stu dents from the mse program who have been using the building for office space since the program started in january according to ottervik he said that reno vation will take place in stages and that there will be a staggered occupancy between university and jewish center congregation until modifications are completed specifics on plans for the building will not be available until the packard lab space committee offers its recom mendations ottervik said the committee was formed last september by himself and provost arthur humphrey and charged with determining who would fill the space in packard left when the comput ing center is to be relocated in super see buildings page 8 ented that he did not expect such resistance since the jewish center was so close but explained the trustees were concerned about where the funding would come from we assumed that because of the loca tion the board would automatically say buy it . . but these are tight times ottervik said the trustees were quite sensitive to development dollars he explained saying that at this time when the university is entering the second phase of the century fund the availabil ity of money for development is limited phase two involves finishing the funding for the super-mart library extension the taylor residential college and the planned renovation of the phys ics building according to paul franz vice president for development he sup ported the trustees assessment saying it doesn't make much sense to takeon a project when there isn't a clear direction of where the support is coming from according to vice president and treasurer john woltjen the five approved areas are those that offer the clearest direction for self-support through possible grants from corpora tions the government and other outside woman professor gives reasonsfor leaving in may by gene marks the equal opportunity advisory com mittee has recently been replaced by the affirmative action equal opportunity commission because the situation has stayed the same the numbers have stayed the same we don't have a good rate of retaining women according to judith lasker associate professor of sociology and member of the new committee the only tenured women professor in the college of business and economics marilyn gerdes assistant professor of accounting said that she feels that not enough effort is being made to recruit female faculty members and that she feels the faculty has lost its input into university decisions i will not be con vinced that there are no qualified women to teach business at lehigh she said currently there are 364 tenured faculty at the university three women of that number are full professors berry richards director of university librar ies is a tenured full professor there are 33 women professors at the university half of that number are tenured faculty members according to rosemary mundhenk associate professor of eng lish and faculty associate and affirma tive action adviser to the provost the college of arts and science employs 28 women professors more than any other college two of those 28 are the only two full female professors at the university thirteen of these women are tenured the college of engineering and physical science employs three female faculty the school of education has one female faculty member as does the college of business and economics dean of the college of business and economics richard barsness said that he'd like to see a higher proportion of women faculty i'm not satisfied with the situation barsness said we'd like our faculty to be more representative of our student body it's important that females have role models that they can identify with too barsness said that he is in the process of recruiting women for recently opened positions created by the resignation of malcom barksdale professor of law the sole black professor in the college and gerdes and is following standard procedure and working with the affir mative
