causing an estimated 100,000 in damages and the evacuation of the approximate 300 students of mcclintic marshall house m&m broke out early monday morning according to bethle hem fire marshal william reinhard no one was injured in the 4:34 a.m one-alarm fire which broke out in the lounge in the northeast corner on the a section of the 27-year-old building and probably was started by a cigarette in a piece of furniture he said reinhard said the fire was brought under control well within an hour he added that university officials were given a stern warning fora chained shut emergency exit door on the north side of the building this morning he said that the explana tion of the cause would probably warrant no further investigation however uni versity officials are checking on the alarm system which was reported by students to quit after a few minutes barbara kreppel director of resi dence operations resops . said the fire charred the lounge area furniture walls and ceiling and caused smoke damage to rooms down an adjacent hallway and up the stairwell she added that the flames were mainly confined to the front of the lounge and that the heavy black soot stopped at the fire door at the end of the hallway near the main entrance physical plant director paul miller said the lounge will be closed from a month to six weeks for repairs while the clean-up of the stairwell was scheduled to start today miller added that the stu dents rooms were only affected by light smoke several gryphons account of the inci dent reveal that the alarm sounded for only about three minutes despite the short alarm all were evacuated from the building until about 7 a.m according to tom grycan 85 gryphon of hall a-l students spent those couple of hours in fraternities other residence halls and the health center he said grycan said he was awakened by the alarm to see a light film of smoke in his room he went out in the hall and saw that the smoke was thicker by the cracks in the stairwell door mechan ical failure is being investigated according to kreppel the pull alarms were tested later monday morning and worked perfectly she added that all pull stations of every alarm in the resi dence halls are checked at the beginning of each month there is a boiler room where the alarm can be turned off but that door was found locked when the police arrived kreppel said brodhead residents deny bias lottery conspiracy were like newcomers outsiders the sophomores at the meeting pro tested later but to no avail john schneider 86 another student forced to leave said if everyone is against you
