be maintained according to the plans an increase in the university's gradu ate school enrollment from 1,900 with one-third full-time students to 2,200 stu dents with one-half full-time is also a priority in university planning accord ing to the document the eventual goal is to confer 100 doctorates per year likins 10-20 percent and humanities 5-15 per cent according to the document according to university president peter likins the objective is to move in the direction of increasing arts and science and decreasing engineering graduates although we admit freshmen by the 40-40-20 rule 40 percent engineering 40 percent arts and 20 percent business , we produce a distribution of students that is most unlike these percentages likins said the plan is to focus on the characteristics of students during their years here and as they graduate not just at admission time so that over time the university can move toward the lower by kathy goldstein the second draft of the university planning document which in final form will establish the direction the univer sity will take in areas including enrol lment faculty and staff instruction and research has been sent to faculty and professional staff and the forum xiv priorities planning and development committee for their review among the future goals of the univer sity is a proposed distribution of bache lor's degrees awarded as follows engineering 35-45 percent business and economics 20-30 percent natural science 15-25 percent social sciences staff members examine athletic recruiting process dynamic trio university mechanical engineering by scott cagan university staff members are con cerned that if the athletic recruiting pro cess is not modified the university's competitiveness in sports may decline we need to expedite the admission and financial aid process head foot ball coach john whitehead said he explained that although the admissions office improved last year in informing the coaches whether a student is likely to be admitted we still have to improve as for the financial aid office they just don't give us projected figures quick enough whitehead said william leckonby director of athlet ics agreed we'd like to get our answers quicker he said if we stay at the same pace it the competitiveness of university sports could decline whitehead warned the only major problem with the uni versity's recruiting process according to william stanford director of financial aid is the major one of timing he explained that although schools with new housing options pass first level which the university competes academi cally and athletically may have received a letter of intent in which a school gua rantees aid to an athlete we haven't at that point even looked at financial aid forms faf stanford added that applications are filed and reviewed sep tember through december and fafs are received at the end of november and december but the financial aid office must wait until after jan 1 to complete the processing of the fafs this stan ford explained is because the federal government requires that a family docu ment its income after the new year to avoid underestimating it university president peter likins said that the formation of the colonial league would alleviate many of these recruiting problems the league which was for mally approved last week by the govern ing boards of tenure rules by john anderson see tenure page 8 the new tenure proposal submit ted by the deans to the university's department chairmen has received limited approval from faculty the proposal recommends the formation of a nine-member faculty committee to make deci sions regarding tenure the members would be tenured faculty and would serve a three-year term future tenure decisions would be referred to a subcommittee of the faculty committee consisting of three members and a chairman the subcommittee would have access to the tenure file of the can didate and would file a recommen dents in tune with a 17-1 student-staff ratio he said the move to house sororities on cam pus was also included in the recommen dations of the subcommittee two plans have been formed for the cases of one or two sororities moving over the first sor ority will occupy congdon house in the centennial i complex the second will be next door in emery house foster said if a second sorority cannot move to cam pus emery will be an all-freshman male dorm he added thornburg house will replace emery as an all-freshman woman's house the subcommittee agreed if emery is a sor ority house the residence life staff will work with the upperclass halls of the centennials to decide which building may become all freshman male accord ing to erickson williams house in the centennial ii complex will become coed with inte grated uppeclass halls next year if the recommendations are implemented according to foster it was agreed that this is a good choice of buildings because of two bathrooms on each hall and an area coordinator in residence residence and the primary interest is to set up a community with cultural aca demic and social programming mark erickson assistant dean of students explained at monday's campus life committee meeting he and other members of the committee visited prin ceton university and the university of pennsylvania to observe their residen tial college systems according to william quay dean of students the residential college will be a dynamic community with an almost intellectual flavor to it taylor has been renovated to include a spacious faculty residence and three lounges that could become flexible programming space he added the residents of taylor will be decided by a selection process run prior to the housing lottery which may include applications recommendations and/or interviews cuff explained the college should be filled with people who truly want to live there not those who are just banking on poor lottery numbers he emphasized the staffing of the resi dence will be an integration of gryphons residence assistants and graduate stu by kathy goldstein the establishment of taylor house as a residential college along with housing options for next year including sorority housing and coed halls was agreed upon wednesday by the residence life special housing joint subcommittee of forum xiv the subcommittee will present its recommendations to the campus life committee on monday for its review once campus life approves of the plans they will go to the full forum and then to residence life in the hopes of implementation for the upcoming year
