lehigh university brown and white 215 861-4184 bethlehem pa tuesday november 8 1983 vol 95 — no 17 black fraternity-members offer colonization opinions by stuart silberman the colonization of a black fraternity on campus is not necessary nor advisa ble at this time according to black members of existing university fraternities larry hunter 83 a member of alpha sigma phi fraternity said he felt the cur rent black population at the univer sity is too small and added i don't think it will be a strong fraternity wes walton 86 a member of zeta psi fraternity agreed with hunter i don't think there are enough black males enrolled in the university to start a colony asked whether he thought a black fra ternity would benefit the minorities hunter said people think it would help but in a way it does segregate the stu dents it's all theoretical it sounds good but he saidhewas worried that the attempt to colonize a chapter might be one step in the wrong direction hunter added that he would like to see a more accepting atmosphere toward minorities on the hill and that he would like to see more blacks get into existing fraternities it doesn't make a difference to me who i'm partying with is long as they're my friends walton said had there been a black fraternity on campus he said i would have considered it but i wouldn't have given it special consideration marc thomas 86 a member of alpha tau omega fraternity said he thinks it's a bad idea heexplained integra tion on the hill is pretty good and that there would be racial problems " involved with the colonization pleased parents these are just a few of the upperclass parents that enjoyed the roast beef cole slaw cheerleaders and the marching 97 at a pre-game luncheon in grace hall financial aid recipients warned to notify office by doug grossinger william stanford director of finan cial aid urged students who have not yet complied with the solomon act to run don't walk to the financial aid office to comply with the regulation the solomon act mandates that college stu dents not registered for the selective service lose federal financial aid according to stanford a mailing was sent out to students oct 13 informing them that they should send in notifica tion within 14 days he said that there are still about 470 aid-receiving students who have not answered as of nov 3 since the financial aid office requires students to reply within 30 days of the oct 13 notifi cation stanford said that nov 13 is d day action will be taken against students who have not notified the uni versity by that date associate director donald crewell said yesterday that the 470 figure was still roughly accurate he also noted that the majority of students who have not yet notified the financial aid office are those with just guaranteed student loans gsls or parent loans and that only a few students w ith direct grants or loans from the university had not notified the office most students with the latter type of aid had complied by checking a ques tion on their initial notification of finan cial aid form he said crewell stressed that those students who have registered or who are exempt will still lose their money if they don't notify the office what we will have to do with stu dents who haven't complied is dis charge our responsibility with funds that we are directly controlling we will have to pull that money he said stanford said that it isn't a pleasant task but we are mandated to take action against students not complying in the case of university students with pell grants or national direct student loans action will involve withdraw ing students credit the bursar will bill them for payment on the balance due banks will receive notification that stu dents with guaranteed student loans are no longer eligible for the loans students who don't register will have their work study employment terminated according to stanford a form was mailed to students receiving aid that asked them to simply check off whether they fall into one of the categories female under 18 years of age which are ineligible for registration males over 18 should submit their selective ser vice registration number to confirm that they have registered stanford said that there have not been any responses from students who claim status as conscientious objectors those morally opposed to registration he added that it seems that either the 470 remaining students have neglected to check their campus mail box or they just think that nothing will happen to them if they don'treply this is out of our hands and we must comply with government directives on financial aid matters such as these he said reflecting on the solomon act stan ford said this is unfortunate legisla tion because it is based on the miscon ception that the selective service and education departments have mastered computer lists that could be used to find non-registerers he added that since there are no master files in either areas it is a costly time-consuming task for colleges to determine on their own which of their students have not registered he said that the cost of administering the provisions of the law are forced upon the university and with the multiple mail ings sent out to students and accompany ingbookwork it just isn't something that makes a lot of sense when the university is trying to keep down costs martial arts b&w photo
