by the support being demonstrated by students and the concern of some faculty members tobak was appointed to the faculty in 1976 he was informed of his failure to receive tenure in january he said he could not discuss the issue because he has appealed the tenure deci sion to the university's personnel committee the committee of five full professors is headed by philosophy professor nor man melchert he said he is aware that tobak is held in high regard by stu dents and that some faculty members are concerned about the tenure decision but that the job of his committee is only to review circulated among students questioning the administra tion's decision not to recommend james tobak assistant professor of accounting and law for promotion with tenure professor tobak is probably one of the finest professors i've had here " said al gordon 83 who initiated the petition with marc paley 83 when i heard he wasn't going to get tenure i felt that lehigh was throwing away an asset that it really couldn't afford to lose gordon said in addition to the student petition some faculty members may send a letter to the administration concerning the tobak tenure decision according to edward morgan associate professor of government i've heard talk among the faculty about this decision morgan said sev eral are upset about the decision and are 1 980 graduate killed thursday in ft dix blast see graduate page 7 michael kochon 80 was killed in an ammunition explosion early thursday afternoon at ft dix n.j according to the bethlehem globe-times kochon a first lieutenant received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the uni versity and was a member of the army rotc the globe-times said kochon 26 was one of four soldiers killed while removing old munitions det onators and fresh explosives from three pick-up trucks kochon was a member of the 60th explosives ordinance detachment whose duties include handling munitions doing controlled explosions and transporting explosives stand regarding the project fowler sees the addition and renova tion as a project which will be advan tageous for physics students as well as those from other departments he said the facility will be one which can be used like the lecture rooms in neville hall it will be a high quality facility for the cam pus fowler added it is a project that will make the old like new the department chairman said it's a project we're excited about not only to benefit the department but the whole university community he added eliminate many of these problems because it will be easily accessible from outside and it will have air conditioning the plans should go into effect near fall 1984 provost arthur humphrey said we have to think in terms of both taylor renovation and the mart library addi tion " he said once these are settled we're home free and can concentrate on this he added robert holcombe assistant vice presi dent of development noted that in order to fund the project his office will have to approach the best prospects they can humphrey noted that sometime this spring the plans concerning the addition and renovation will be completed and the university will begin accepting bids for the project in a year from now humphrey said we'll know where we building will be removed corallo said and we will possibly get two floors of lab or teaching space out ot it the renovation and addition is a much needed endeavor according to w beall fowler chairman of the physics depart ment the building is 90 years old fowler said it was renovated 20 years ago but it was just cleaned up not mod ernized he added according to fowler the present state of the building does not lend itself to the circulation of air or people there is crowding in the hallway and there isn't enough space to store lecture-room equipment fowler noted that most of the problem is due to the fact that the large lecture room is only accessible by way of the fourth floor the new addition fowler said will barbara kreppel director of resi dence operations said that rathbone hall can be used as a study area if one of the other locations is not available in the fall both the social regulation and study room proposals will be taken up at tomorrow's forum meeting in uc room 308 at 4 10 p.m glen stettin 84 chairman of the coed housing subcommittee presented to the campus life committee the preliminary results of a random survey of 600 male and 600 female students on the issue of having a coed-by-room housing option at the university stettin said that 255 of the female and 207 of the male students who received the survey form responded he stated that about 75 percent of the female students and about 85 percent of the male students who responded are in favor of having a coed-by-adjacent-room housing option he said that the same percen tages believe that a coed-by-room option would enhance student life stettin explained these are only the raw results of the survey and the final results will be available in the near future nities have parties on wednesdays instead of thursday nights steve haekler 84 cochairman of the social regulations subcommittee said that liv ing groups can ask dean of students wil liam quay to make exceptions to the regulations for special events haekler said that he has been in con tact with larry philippi assistant to the dean of students and it was decided that the party patrol would be responsible for enforcing the new regulations the campus life committee also passed a proposal from the residence life subcommittee which calls for the establishment of study areas in the cort dining room of the university center uc and in williams hall according to leonard wenzel profes sor of chemical engineering and chair man of the residence life subcom mittee the extra study space is needed to alleviate some of the housing problems caused by the taylor hall renovation scheduled for the 1983-84 academic year wenzel said the subcommittee has stu died the cort room and determined its lighting to be adequate for study 3.3 million renovation of physics building set the campus life committee of forum xiii unanimously passed a recommen dation thursday that calls for two changes in the university's social regulations according to the resolution the serv ing of food would no longer be required at open parties but shall be recom mended the amendment maintains however that visible equally accessible and equally-attractive non-alcoholic beverages must still be present during all events at which alcoholic beverages are served the resolution also calls lor a change in the regulations controlling thursday night closed parties if this resolution is implemented alcoholic beverages may be served lor any consecutive three hour period terminating no later than 2 a.m friday morning the serving of alcoholic beverages on other week nights however must still terminate by midnight one of the members of the committee mentioned that some off-campus frater by michael melley by valerie votto plans are being made to renovate the university physics building according to anthony corallo director of facilities and physical planning the project said corallo has a 3.3 million budget in 1984 dollars corallo referred to the project as a total refurbishment of the building included in the plans corallo noted will be the addition of a lecture hall with a 250-300 person capacity and a corridor which will connect the building to fair child laboratory a preliminary feasi bility study has been completed by an outside architect corallo said and the new addition will go out the south side of the west wing which is adjacent to fair child lab the big lecture hall in the physics bethlehem pa tuesday march 22 1983
