warren soare associate dean of stu dents lor residence has been committed to muhlenberg medical center for observation soare was picked up by campus police k saturday night on packer avenue on a 302 commitment order according to dean of students william quay a 302 commitment is an order for involuntary commitment soare has also been cited by bethle hem police for two counts of harassment in connection with separate assaults ear lier that evening on the city's south side according to bethlehem police the first incident occurred on west morton street where a bethlehem man was struck in the face and knocked to the 215 861-4184 lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday february 8 1983 alternate-room coed housing found at comparable schools vol 94 — no 31 university of rochester and the massa chusetts institute of technology during telephone interviews with representatives of the 15 schools holmes said he asked the follow ing ques tions do you presently have alternate room coed housing if so how many students are involved do they have common or separate faciltities how long have you had this coed housing what has been the response to it stevens institute and duke university are the only schools of the 15 which do not have the alternate-room coed housing the dean of students for duke said of all the schools he's worked at duke was the most segregated a spokeswoman for stevens said the school did not have this kind of coed housing because the undergraduate women did not want it according to the report the number of students involved in the alternate-room coed housing ranges from 35 at franklin and marshall's international house to the entire on-campus student population at the university of pennsylvania tufts and penn have some coed bathrooms although the majority of the other schools have separate facilities the length of time alternate-room see coed page 5 high percentage of women off campus an issue by michael frisoli a report presented at thursday's meeting of the coed housing sub committee of the campus life com mittee of forum xiii states that 13of the 15 schools with which the university compares itself have alternate-room coeducational housing the report prepared by sub committee member mark holmes 83 is part of the subcommittee's efforts to get the university to accept alternate-room coed housing a proposal that had been turned down by the board of trustees several years ago according to the report the schools interviewed were not chosen randomly they were taken from a list submit ted . by the president's office the list had been previously used by lehigh to compare itself to other similar institu tions in regard to tuition and fee increases the 15 schools selected from the report are boston university bucknell univer sity carnegie-mellon university col gate university cornell university duke university franklin and marshall college lafayette college princeton university rensselear polytechnic institute stevens institute tufts uni versity the university of pennsylvania visiting king b&w photo by bonnie riegf yolanda king daughter of the late martin luther king stressed cooperation and nonviolence as the means toward achieving peace in the world in a speech thursday afternoon see story page 4 slipslidin whitcomb indicated that it is espe cially hard to communicate with off campus women because if they don't see the brown and white or they miss signs in the university center and other places they may miss a lot of things she said she also stressed the fact that it is hard to pull them in for educational programs that will prepare them with the operational skills they will need after they leave the university dana quinn 83 one upperclass woman living off campus said she felt that off-campus living did not interfere with her ability to receive campus news and information about women's pro gramming no not at all she said what interests us are in our own depart - by beau stacom the fact that 45 percent of the univer sity's upperclass women live off campus has raised questions about communica tion off-campus safety participation in women's programming and sorority options having so many upperclass off campus women may have an effect on women's programming and communi cation between these women and the university it's hard to tell i don't know if these women would come on campus for women's programming or not muriel whitcomb assistant dean of students said she continued saying that having so many women off campus is ii concern for a lot of reasons ground police also allege soare assaulted a man on vine street slapping him in the face approximately 15 min utes after the first incident quay said soare had left the univer sity for health reasons last monday quay added that he told soare at that time that he would only be allowed on campus after he had received medical clearance quay also said he told soare he would need a positive recommenda tion from the university's consulting psychiatrist according to a spokesman for the muhlenberg medical center a 302 com mitment lasts for a minimum of five days following the five-day period a hearing will be conducted to review the case ments and we keep in touch with them we're not out of touch with the rest of the campus our classes are on campus caryn culleton 84 another upper class woman living off campus indi cated that perhaps some sort of service should be set up through an off-campus student organization to provide informa tion about university news to off-campus women a point of considerable concern to both the university and women living off campus is the question of the safety of off-campus living how safe are all those places whitcomb said she expressed a great deal of concern over the safety and quality of the heating electricity plumbing and maintenance soare held for observation cited twice for harassment services of the off-campus houses once women are off-campus she said they are at the mercy of their landlords—some are just trying to make a fast buck quinn and culleton both expressed similar feelings about safety of off campus living i think it's bound to be a bigger risk living off campus but it's also up to you not to leave your door unlocked etc quinn said culleton said that her house had been burglari zedd twice under previous ownership and added safety is already a problem on campus so it's even more of a problem off campus the number of sororities at the univer see high page 5 by tom dipiazza the first snowfall of the semester caused slick road condi tions these students enjoyed the fine conditions on the slopes outside of taylor dorm
