financial aid alone will not solve the problems of the arts and science col lege said william stanford director of financial aid in response to the sugges tion that increased aid would improve the quality of prospective arts students in a report on admissions to the college of arts and sciences written in june 1982 the proposal of increasing financial aid offers was a means of attracting more desirable arts school candidates to a university that is technically oriented the proposals of this report among them increased financial aid to arts stu dents were recently discussed by faculty and administrators and a resolu tion was unanimously passed in november affirming support for the intent and direction " of these moves according to john hunt dean of the col lege of arts and science these ideas are falling on friendly ears he said we have begun making significant moves and will continue he added there is a 100-percent correlation between offers of financial aid and the acceptance of admission offers in the arts school hunt continued the financial aid money is not deliberately divided up but has fallen into this pattern of even distribution between the three colleges we hope to begin to use this as a deliberate tool to draw a larger pool of qualified applicants he said however hunt said that the aim is not to change the quality of the students in the college of arts and sciences saying the quality of the students in the arts school is already good the aim he said would be to consider not only the quality of the students but also the stu dent's motive for applying in order to attempt to reduce the large numbers of transfers between the three colleges ol the university the 50-percent attrition rate in the col lege of arts and sciences indicates that we have not gotten the students who see arts pago 3 taylor renovation to up trembley occupancy see students pagt 4 drinker mcclintic-marshall dravo and richards houses be used as double rooms with some lounges becoming triples the plan was met with some unfavora occupancy creates 20 extra spaces other residence halls that will be affected by this plan are the upper and lower centennials there are 12 houses in these complexes and each house is paired to another the game and study rooms in one house in each pair will be used for housing this will create 48 extra spaces in the residence system the plan also recommends that var ious single rooms and study lounges in hourglass wine ruling due before end of final exams by kathi moork plans to compensate for the 169 resi dence spaces that will be unavailable in the fall due to the scheduled renovation of taylor hall include increasing the capacity of most trembley park apart ments it was announced yesterday officials from the office of residence life residence operations the resi dence halls council the gryphon society and the residence subcommit tee of forum xiii met to hear the prop osal to accommodate the approximately 169 students who will be displaced according to this plan the number of residents in most trembley park apart ments will be increased from four to five and the brodhead house suites with one double room and two single rooms will also be used to house five students instead of four increasing the trembley park occupancy creates 43 extra spaces and increasing the brodhead house bytom di piazza the number of women and black faculty at the university is seriously deficient and has to be increased within existing numerical con straints according to university president peter likins in an interview last week review ing his first semester as president likins discussed minority and women students at lehigh and changes in the social regulations as well as faculty recruiting likins said the sex or race of a candidate is a consideration in hiring additional faculty members i must confess that an appeal by a department for a faculty addition would be more favorably received in this office if the department were able to say to me that there was a women or minority that they were particu larly interested in recruiting for the job likins said he noted that sex or minority status is not a sufficient criterion for a faculty addition only a relative cri terion he said it is a tough problem ' because departments with needs for additional faculty must first be identi likins notes social life faculty-recruiting issues fied and then qualified candidates in these areas have to be found we must do our damnedest within existing constraints to bring more women and black faculty to this place likinssaid he added that one way the administration could work to achieve this goal is by identifying qualified women and minority candi dates for openings at the university he said increasing the number ol black and female faculty members administrators and staff personnel are important steps in improving the recruitment of black students and male-female relations respectively likins characterized the minority recruiting problem as a serious fail ure to bring blacks to lehigh in signif icant numbers he said more blacks in faculty administration and staff particularly in areas with high inter action with students would improve the situation but that a crash recruit ing program to attract more black students to the university is not the answer to the problem see likins page 4 by alyson kirleis a contract to allow students to bring wine to the hourglass has been proposed and the decision should be made before finals according to michele small 84 hourglass coordinator small says the idea has been proposed to the dean-of students office and the only problems are the legality of serving wine in the university center and the question of proofing we would like to assume that since they buy wine in the liquor store they are 21 small added small said that in general the idea of permitting wine at the hourglass was very well received even by the administration roger watkins assistant dean of stu dents declined to comment on the idea because he said he was still reviewing the proposal according to small the purpose of per mitting wine at the hourglass is to create a nice relaxing atmosphere where you can sit down and listen to a band and be entertained she went on to say that it would be an alternative to the non-alcoholic university-sponsored events and the excessive quantities of alcohol available at dorm parties and on the hill if the wine proposal is accepted the atmosphere of the hourglass will be jazzed up " small said she said they will provide glasses and that the food served will probably be switched from chips to fruit cheese and crackers we will also have tablecloths she added in addition small said she also has plans for a special hourglass for closed party weekends which would be held in room 308 of the university center she " said it would be designed like a nightclub with a dance floor it would have a nice nightclub atmosphere with a nightclub type band also with the possibility of serving different types of wine added small small said she feels the addition of wine will help attendance somewhat and help to attract a different crowd small said attendance has increased a lot since the beginning of the semester she feels this is due to the more expen sive entertainment being offered small said that on the average the hourglass costs approximately 600 a week this includes food rooms sound and cleanup plus the cost of the act which makes up about 500 of the cost small said that this is just an approximate figure l
