soccer practice shows promise increased membership to be its goal 150 men last year desire 400 this year judson g smull authority on pigments to give talk to course members shares upper field with la crosse — team in need of good line material brown & white expects victory despite fact that rochester scored against cornell alpha rho chapter of honorary fraternity was instituted during summer fall practice is bringing out much good material for team positions schedule being formed cusick back at tackle squad has been brought thru intensive workouts during past week list will include games with navy crescent a c hopkins swarthmore stevens & penn the first meeting of the chemi cal society will be held tonight in the main lecture room of the chem istry building at 7:30 mr jud son g smiull formerly of the re search laboratories of the new jer sey zinc co and the national lead co will speak on the subject of some mineral pigments for paint manufacture in the past mr smull has been conducting re searches om the subject of pigments and has also been employed as special research consulting chemist in the manufacture of pigments made from iron compounds he will explain the manufacture of paint and the methods of prepar ing mineral pigments a large turniout is expected for the meeting anid freshmen are es pecially urged to come in order to acquire the habit of regular attend ance the chemical society is the oldest engineering society in the university and by general opinion is conceded to be one of the best course societies in college it has for its object the advancement oi science and it gives the student the chance of meeting men of promin ence in chemical engineering it makes for genial and free social intercourse among students and instructors rev wm reed will address y m c a the upper field is the scene of great activity these days with the soccer and lacrosse squads both practicing 1 there dlaily as both squads need space to manieouver in to advantage it has been agreed that the soccer squad will have ex clusive use of the playing field on monday wednesday and friday and soon these days all the soccer men should be on hand the practice is confined at pres en to trying shots at the goal and then a short scrimmage as yet no effort is being made to develop combination play before that can be attempted there is a lot of kick ing around needed in order that the men may become accustomed to hamdilin'g the ball and themselves but no doubt in the near future tentative line-ups will be picked 1 and tried as the game with girard college is not so very distant and to have a winning soccer team it is necessary as it is in every sport that the men play well together there seem to be any amount of strong kickers en hand who will develop into ; dependable backs in time good line iraterial is as yet scarce and will take a lot of devel oping however judging from the large muimjber out a strong team should easily be built up in time to win its first game cross country trials tomorrow afternoon the lacrosse squad is making en couraging progress for the fall practice over fifty men have re ported to gapt maurer and many of these are practicing daily due to the fact that many of last year's varsity men have been lost by graduation there are many open ings on the team which must be filled this furnishes an excellent opportunity for the new men the captain therefore would like to see several more out next week asst manager drew has given out all the uniforms and sticks that are available the league games will be arranged by the intercol legiate lacrosse association when it meets sometime this fall they will be with john hopkins swarth niore stevens and university of pennsylvania additional oppon ents who will be on our schedule are crescent a c navy and any other northern teams pasisinig thru this section of the country games with rutgers penn state and st john's college are pending the johns hopkins game will be here this year probably on the twenty eighth of may the same day as the lafayette base-ball game the university rifle club which htad its birth test year with the or ganizing of the r o t c will re new activities within a week or two with a drive for new members the olub last year had a total member ship of about 150 mem but it is the d/esire of the leaders of the club to attain this year an enrollment of from three to four hunkired stud ents the club is not by any means a military one nor is membership in it restricted to those students who have enrolled in the r o t c the club is purely a student organi zation with membership open to all students at lehigh the purpose of the club is to provide a means of indulging in and becoming adept by practice at a very popular and useful sport a very nominal due will be charged it being the privil ege of the members to come and shoot when they please after the club has been duly or ganized for the year meets will be arranged with the rifle clubs of the various colleges a successful season is practically assured for the club has among its odd members fourteen jcrack-shotsimen and it is certain that there are many fresh men who have acquired skill at the sport moreover there still lingers in our memory the excellent show ing made by our club in its initial meet with rutgers last season the first meeting will be duly announc ed in the brown and white and upon the bulletin boards university band now part of r o t c the speaker for the 4:15 p.*m sunday meeting of the y m c a will be rev wm i reed secre tary of americanization work in the anthracite goal district the rev reed is a man's man and will coxe with a stirring message dur ing the war he left his pulpit to en gage in the field service work of the y m c a and since then has been assigned to the important work of americanization and so cial service in the coal regions , the music committee plans to have a special feature each week last sunday the singing by the college quartette was an attrac tion this sunday another novelty will be offered glee & mandolin clubs hold joint meeting the cross country trial run for the purpose of picking the team for the lafayette meet will be held to morrow the start will be from the track at twenty minutes after the start of the football game the purpose being to have the runners finish up on the football field between the halves the team will finish under the west goal posts and if necessary the sec omd half of the football game will be delayed coach kanaly has arranged with major lang to have a cordon of r o t c men keep a space open from the lawn behind the tennis courts to the west goal posts individual time will be taken in saturday's trials and gold silver and bronze medads will be awarded to the first three men durimg the practice on wednes day coach kanaly fell and injured his wrist an x-ray has been tak en but the results are yet unknown the cross country team will run rutgers at the carnegie tech game on oct 30th and pentn state during the penn state game on nov 13 the following 1 men will run to morrow's contest bray burgess briegmann esterson fancher gerlachi leister mcnulty pumph rey rodgers schwarzbach un derwood and vanbilliard the alpha rho chapter of pi delta epsilon the honorary fra ternity was instituted at lehigh university late last june owing to the fact that this was after the close of the college year the great majority of the student body is ignorant of the purpose of pi delta epsilon and the existence of a chapter at lehigh pi delta epsilon is a national honorary journalistic fraternity founded at syracuse university in 1909 the alpha rhio chapter re ceived the 16th charter granted this fraternity corresponds more nearly to phi beta kappa or to tau beta pi than to any other or ganization in the university it is an honorary society to which a limited number of the deserving upper classmen will be elected an nually from the lehigh brown & white lehigh burr and epi tome boards there will be no distinction made between fratern ity and non fraternity men two year's memibershiip indicating meri torious service on one of the above boards will be the sole qualification pi delta epsilom will not form a new living group nior will it re quire a great outlay of time on the part of its members short month ly meetings addresses etc togeth er with the few duties imlposed by the national organization will com prise the greater part of the activ ity the chief justification for the exist enice of the society will be as in phi beta kappa or tau beta pi the increased interest manifest ed and the resulting benefits deriv ed from the added attention to the activity for which the honor of election is conferred in this case a high journalistic rather than a high scholastic standing is the de termining factor for which the hon or is awarded the results of the establishment of this chapter will be as follows it will develop better team work among the publications ; it will centralize the journalistic power of the university so that it can be used mare efficiently to mold uni versity opinion to conduct cam paigns or in any other capacity where unity is necessary ; it can very well be used as a press club for the purpose of securing pub licity and obtaining deserved recog nition for lehigh activities ath letic or otherwise ; it will create greater incentive and therefore draw more and better competitors for positions on the various boards the net effect wil be marked im provement in all publications j a gardy night 7 p iff in the burr room in drown hall a rehearsal of the combined musical clubs was held wednes day night in drown hall and from the abundance of talent present all indications point to a good year for the clubs all those wishing a try out for the glee club should see mt shields any morning immedi ately after chapel and for mando lin club try-outs report to ertner taylor hall manager bowden 21 is busily engaged arranging trips for the clubs having several attractive engagements in view the university band at a meet ing held during the practice hour last thursday decided to extend its activities to include the r o t c a large number of the band members already belong to the unit and this number has now grown to about 35 the remainder of the band signified their willingness to play for the r o t c whenever the presence of a band at reviews and the like is desired regardless of the fact that they are not mem bers of the unit the band under this arrangement will be provided with uniforms more instruments and music by the government this does not alter the band's status as the university band in the least when playing at games smokers and other college func tions the present uniform of gob hats sweaters and white trousers will be worn as usual the only change effected by the band's de cision is that the r o t c will be able to boast of as complete an out fit as the best of lehigh's competi tors in that line although the mark reached by the band this year ini point of num bers and quality of music is un questionably high there is still plenty of room for more good ma terial if all the musicians in col lege get behind the band its future as a permanent organization is as sured arcadia to back all freshman rules council meets swimmers notice although the game tomorrow af ternoon with the university of ro chester football team is not consid ered a hard battle for the lehigh warriors tom keady has put the whole team through a number of good scrimmages in order that they will be in the best of shape for the game on tuesday afternoon at dusk whlen the brown anld white toilers were preparing to leave the field tom surprised them by tell ing them ito don their head gears for scrimmages it did not last long but it was a gruelling fight and lasted into the fast-coming darkness gulick and larkin have been holding down the end jobs pretty regularly and by their good work it is judged that that they will be in the start of saturday's game cus ick's work at tackle shows that he has about recovered from his in jured leg and will be in 1 good shape to enter with bob good at the tackles mccarthy and maginnes have been working nicely at the guard positions and will be the se lections for these two responsible positions goldman and w spring steen have been alternating thru most of the practices this week at center and the man to fill this po sition is still in doubt most like ly goldman will be picked as a re sult of bis splendid work in last saturday's contest with rutgers mike wilson followed the first team a good deal and it is likely that he wild be inserted in the game af ter it gets under way the backfield has been shuffled about a good deal during the past week and a selection will foe hard to make harry rote who featured in the rutgers game by ms splend id 45-yard run for a touchdown has been handling the team in fine style and has made a big impression by his long runs capt herriegton has been used at right halfback for the greater part of the time and will enter the game at this position the other two positions are not quite so certain as there have been a number of exchanges between henzleman savaria lingle and goleman the two latter men are rather light and will most likely be used for open field running while savaria and henzleman wil'l entef the game for the main purpose of line plunging the team representing 1 the uni versity of rochester will be some what handicapped by the loss of their captain and the poor condition of one or two of their first-string men but coach sullivan gives promise of bringing a fairly strong team to bethlehem the lineup which will be used will be almost the same one that held the cornell eleven to two touchdowns and scored a six-pointer for rochester merson will take the place of capt harris at fullback continued on page three in comparing the teams by their weights it is found that the ro chester line outweighs the lehigh forward's by only a small margin at the last arcadia meeting which was held thursday night of last week there were brought up several violations of the freshman rules the question was thoroughly discussed and the outcome is that the arcadia is going to back up all the rules of the university and see that all violations of the rules are brought up and the offenders pun ished all men who desire to go out for positions as plungers and divers on the swimming team will report to coach mahoney in the gym next monday at 4 p m for preliminary workouts freshman football the freshman football team is being organized in preparation for playing games with several neigh boring 1 high schools practice is held every afternoon on the upper field and all freshmen are urged to come out in order to make the team a successful one oni monday the inter-fraternity council held a very brief meeting the holding o<f a big dance after the lafayette game was discussed in all probability such a dance will be held no other new business was taken up civil society plans for first gathering on next thursday night oct 21 at 7 30 p m the civil engineering society will hold its first meeting in fritz laboratory as yet no definite program has been arranged for the evening but in all probability president drinker will give a short talk prof fogg head of the naval engineering de partment and prof chapman of the same department as well as sev eral other members of the civil and naval staffs will have something worth while to say prof fuller will make some tests son g simull formerly of the re of materials laboratory and in the hydraulic lab so as to give the lower classmen who as yet have had no opportunity to see this ap paratus work an idea as to how such tests are made in addition to the regular pro gram it will be necessary to elect some new officers to replace those men who have not returned to col lege as in previous years a guessing contest will be held with prizes as the award's for the successful con testarils the contest however will not be similar to those of preced ing meets but something quite dif ferent of course there will be the usual smokes and cobs as well as a royal good time for those who attend all men in the civil and naval depart ments are urged to be present this includes the men in the
