flight theory instruc tion the members of the flight course have had their temporary pilots license since passing their physical examination four weeks ago the instructors at the airport are being re-licensed for this spec ial work a precaution taken by the government to insure the 11,000 students taking this course an equal amount of instruction the airport has two new train ing planes at the of history and government was elected president of the pennsylvania historical as sociation at a meeting saturday at the hotel bethlehem he is the third president of the society which was founded in 1933 at bethlehem dr gipson a member of the first delegation of rhodes scholars who went to oxford in 1904 has been here since 1924 he graduated from the university of idaho in 1903 and received his ciation at a testimonial din ner honoring howard bosey reiter professor of physical edu cation friday evening at the mur ray hill hotel in new york city over 200 lehigh and princeton alumni listened to tributes by rei ter's former teammates gridiron players and athletic associates the new york alumni club presented reiter with a silver tray and a life membership in the organization inscribed on the tray was the following tribute to bosey rei ter for loyal devotion to athletes of lehigh university from the new york lehigh alumni club octo ber 1939 times columnist speaks john kieran sports columnist of the new york times and a reg ular member of the information please radio program spoke about several athletic experiences and the spirit of devoted attention to sportsmanship and fair play william edwards captain of the 1899 princeton football team re lated several humorous incidents in which reiter was involved while a player at princeton he spoke of reiter's courage and spirit while an undergraduate in outlining the alumni student grants fund parsons stated that the young man who has athletic ability and meets scholastic and all other requirements for admis sion to lehigh donald 19 president of the new york alumni club was chairman library's 3rd art exhibit to feature sport pictures review circulation manager resigns to succeed wells denison appoints rich will hold contest that the united states should keep out of war yet carry on trade with belligerents is the opinion of the majority of more than 450 stu dents who answered the poll of student opinion distributed last week with the brown and white especially bitter was the attack on agencies for spreading foreign propaganda as an overwhelming majority voted in favor of outlaw ing the communist party german american bund and agencies for spreading allied propaganda the poll sponsored by the in tercollegiate newspaper associa tion and distributed under the di rection of howard m conner arts 40 vice president of the organiza tion was also undertaken by 30 colleges in the middle atlantic states favor cash and carry plan lehigh results revealed that stu dents favor the repeal of the arms embargo and favor legislative neu trality achieved by a cash and carry plan for supplying both bel ligerents allies and germany with arms and war materials if america became involved in a european war most of the stu dent body would submit unwilling to conscription while nearly 25 per cent would submit willingly only a few would voluntarily en list still fewer would accept the consequences for refusing to be drafted or would flee the country students choose dewey president roosevelt should here and now renounce third term am bitions voted 246 students only 30 favored his declaring himself a candidate for re-election the re maing votes were cast with the idea that he should bide his time so as to keep politics in the back ground at present thomas e dewey is the lehigh choice for the next president of the united states he polled three times as many votes as the next choice senator vandenburg of michigan and roosevelt was close behind in third place senator taft of ohio herbert hoover and neil carothers dean of the college of business administration were fav ored in that order pan-americanism appeals nearly 300 students believed that neutrality could be preserved in the western hemisphere by con certed action of pan-american republics others favored strict enforcement of the monroe doc trine with the united states in the role of protector or a policy of each country looking out for itself the present war will result in a world situation in which the pres ent statis will be intact with the existance of dictatorship and dem ocracy according to lehigh opin ion this result differs from that of most other colleges which believe that the overthrow of hitlerism and similar institutions will be the result one hundred and sixty three at lehigh believed this would be the result few thought that western civilization or euro pean democracy would be over thrown prize to winners photographers to award e robins morgan director of placement attended the fall con ference of the eastern college per sonnel officers held thursday and friday under the auspices of r h macy and company at the hotel mcalpin new york city the con ference brought together personnel officers of industry and placement officers of major colleges in the east mr morgan stated that many of the interviewers who hire lehigh men were present at the confer ence the head of the personnel departments of such concerns as bethhlehem steel company dv pont colgate-palmolive-peet com pany l bamberger company and proctor and gamble attended the conference the program gave an opportun ity for the college placement offi cers to criticise the methods used by industrial interviewers and vice versa will not profiteer says bethlehem steel corp although he is considered to be one of the leading munitions manufacturers eugene g grace president of the board of trustees and president of bethlehem steel corporation said last week i'd like to see a situation where we'd never sell another gun another battleship or another projectile this statement was made after a board of directors meeting i'd like to see he continued the world stop destroying values and start creating values and that would spell better business pro fits before this statement was made bethlehem steel reported a profit of 5,377,470 earned in the last three months and grace verified the fact that the company is in full 100 per cent all-around produc tion and is making armaments for the united states government bethlehem's unfilled orders at the end of september of over 260 mil lion dollars is a peace time record and orders for export are more than normal concerning legislation mr grace said my personal opinion is that repeal of the munitions embargo would be a definite step toward peace and i favor it i believe re peal have increased this year according to registration figures re leased by registrar george b cur tis a total of 168 men and women carrying a total of 1226 credit hours are candidates for either a masters degree or the ph d de gree there are 21 women students enrolled making one more than last year these figures show an increase of ten students and 101 hours over the 1938 totals of the 168 the prints included are two pictures of recent heavy weight bouts of note these are the baer-carnera fight of 1934 and the louis-baer fight of 19 35 both are lithographs by golin kin another neighborhood champ by robert riggs shows the return of a victor in the rowing division there are three prints the first match be tween eton and westminister by r k thomas records the begin ning in 1843 of prep-school row ing championships there are also two companion pictures done in 1859 by james ryman the start and the race new york fashions for base ball by hatch shows the wearing apparel of spectators at a baseball game in 1870 also included in the baseball division is a picture by monsch called tally one for me it is a shot of a typical 1877 crowd two championship baseball teams are used in these pictures boston baseball club 1888 by hastings and the knickerbocker nine 1854 by wagoner the oldest print in this exhibit dating back to 1650 is a wood-cut entitled vaulting through the hoops by an anonymous german this picture dates back to 1650 three etchings by charles may portraying modern football will feature the gridiron division of the third art exhibit for this year which will open tomorrow and continue for two weeks in the li brary's art galery the title of the exhibit is four centuries of sport these football pictures are round the end first hundred yards are the hardest and no touchdown which depicts an official ruling near a goal line there are four pictures in the wrestling group three done in the 20th century and one in the 19th two of the modern pictures 200 lehigh and princeton alumni listened to tributes by rei ter's former teammates gridiron players and athletic associates the new york alumni club presented reiter with a silver tray and a life membership in the organization inscribed on the tray was the following tribute to bosey rei ter for loyal devotion to athletes of lehigh university from the new york lehigh alumni club octo ber 1939 times columnist speaks john kieran sports columnist of the new york times and a reg ular member of the information please radio program spoke about several athletic experiences and the spirit of devoted attention to sportsmanship and fair play william edwards captain of the 1899 princeton football team re lated several humorous incidents in which reiter was involved while a player at princeton he spoke of reiter's courage and spirit while an undergraduate in outlining the alumni student grants fund parsons stated that the young man who has athletic ability and meets scholastic and all other requirements for admis sion to lehigh university will re ceive preference under the new plan parsons stated that since the plan was outlined in detail to alumni in last month's alumni football rules committee was toastmaster g r bucky mc donald 19 president of the new york alumni club was chairman library's 3rd art exhibit to feature sport pictures review circulation manager dents who answered the poll of student opinion distributed last week with the brown and white especially bitter was the attack on agencies for spreading foreign propaganda as an overwhelming majority placement attended the fall con ference of the eastern college per sonnel officers held thursday and friday under the auspices of r h macy and company at the hotel mcalpin new york city the con in the graduate school and the number of credit hours taken by them have increased this year according to registration figures re leased by registrar george b cur tis a total of 168 men and women a typical 1877 crowd two championship baseball teams are used in these pictures boston baseball club 1888 by hastings and the knickerbocker nine 1854 by wagoner the oldest print in this exhibit dating back to 1650 is a wood-cut entitled vaulting through the hoops by an anonymous german this picture dates back to 1650 three etchings by charles may portraying modern football will feature the gridiron division of the third art exhibit for this year which will open tomorrow and continue for two weeks in the li brary's art galery the title of the exhibit is four centuries of sport these football
