lehigh university brown and white 861-4184 bethlehem pa friday august 29 1980 vol 91 — no 49 enthusiasm reigns bb.w photo by greg musser he may not be a frosh but craig anderson business manager for the athletic department still benefits from the overwhelming enthusiasm freshmen barbara riddell and beth humphries generated at the annual freshman rally the slogan for the rally was we're gonna store with 84 or something like that former university student convicted on three charges bytomdipiazza lawrence bradshaw a former university student was convicted june 12 of attempted third degree murder aggravated assault and recklessly en dangering another person he is currently serving a 90-day term at farview a state institution for the criminally insane at waymart pa bradshaw was convicted in the dec 20 attack on his roommate farrid salloum 82 who was critically injured after being struck several times in the head with a masonry hammer salloum has since returned to the university according to chief county public defender chester reybitz the defense will appeal the court's verdict and request a new trial the appeal contends that the verdict was contrary to the evidence and law and that reybitz did not have time to prepare after bradshaw's first lawyer was called away on military duty i was not prepared reybitz said explaining that he had only two days to ready his defense and was only able to call one witness i could not call any of his family on his behalf i did not have sufficient time he added reybitz termed the trial a fiasco bradshaw who has been in prison since his arrest could have been granted ad ditional time but he would have waived his right to a fair and speedy trial his lawyer said because the trial date could have been postponed for months brad shaw refused to accept the continuance reybitz said bradshaw could face five to 10 years in prison but sentencing will not occur until after the appeals have been made reybitz said in a hearing on march 3 investigator howard smith of the bethlehem police department said bradshaw told him he struck the victim because salloum's alpha brain waves had been entering his brain and controlling him since october 1979 hall-oates show canceled other fall shows planned bv ed white with one concert already over and another canceled before classes even started lor the fall semester returning upperclass students and incoming fresh men may be wondering when they will get to see a show in the still relatively new stabler arena very soon according to richard fritz director of events at the university and the person mainly responsible for booking events at the arena things are looking pretty good he said of the ex pected fall lineup the broadway hit show beatlemania has already been scheduled for friday sept 12 and dates are being held for several other shows including a possible concert by the marshall tucker band sept 27 and a closed circuit color tv showing of the muhammed ali-larry holmes heavy weight title fight scheduled for oct 2 in las vegas a religious crusade by the son of the nationally-known evangelist oral roberts is slated for sept 20 and the ice follies holiday on ice combined shows featuring olympic silver medalist and former world champion figure skater linda fratianne is slotted for nov 12-16 a hall and oates concert which had been planned as the second rock concert - and first of the fall semester — to be held in the 6,000 plus-seat stabler arena in saucon valley aug 20 was canceled the day of the show due to personal problems involving the wife of a band member the brown and white has learned darryl hall and john oates would have been only the second rock act to play at the arena since it officially opened last november but complications in the pregnancy of the wife of the band's bass player forced him to leave the area sud denly and fly to his wife's bedside fritz explained the official word is that she was having complications with her pregnancy and her husband just got on an airplane and took off like any good husband would fritz said since the band did not want to play without its regular bassist the concert was hearing set for sigma phi fraternity charged with theft by jerry miller sigma phi fraternity faces ihe possibility of major disciplinary action if convicted of charges to be brought by the university disciplinary committee during september the house could lose official university recognition according to william quay dean of students and chairman of the committee the charges stem from the june 20 discovery by campus police of several thousand dollars worth of reportedly stolen items in the fraternity's chapter room if found guilty quay said the possibilities include the withdrawal of recognition by the university to placing the house on probation the theft charge brought against sigma phi carries a maximum punishment of expulsion or suspension when applied to individuals quay noted that the charges will be brought against the house as a whole no individual charges have been filed campus police stumbled across the cache while responding to an alarm from the house's automatic system the door to the chapter room was open and when police went to close it they found the room filled with stolen goods belonging to other lehigh fraternities the university the city the postal service and others at cording to a letter quay sent to andy hospodor 81 president of sigma phi the room was padlocked in june until a method of returning the items was worked out quay said the most valuable items found were three skeletons presumably taken from the biology department in williams hall worth several thousand dollars other university property found included a number of paintings and plaques a large amount of fraternity property fraternity faces possible charges for wet t-shirt university disciplinary charges are ix'ing formulated against delta tau delta fraternity according to robert cohen associate dean of students the fraternity has been accused of sponsoring a wet t-shirt contest during last spring's greek week festivities cohen said several women reportedly disrobed during the contest which was held on the fraternity's balcony delta tau delta was found guilty in 1978 of a class b violation of the university code of conduct in connection with a wet t shirt contest held during greek week 78 the fraternity was placed on social probation as a result cohen who will handle the case for the university said wednesday that no formal help b&.w photo by andy ginsburg " i can't believe i waited in the add-drop line for three hours and the registrar just went out to lunch frustrations ahounded the first few days see events page 5 see party page 5 see police page i the next issue of the brown and white will be friday sept 5 there will be a mandatory meeting for all those interested in working on the brown and white this semester on tuesday sept 2 at 4:30 p.m in u.c room 308 inside new trustee p 3 new roads p 5 new coaches p 12
