that the board of trustees for mally adopt the faculty ad hoc commit tee on disciplines findings as the university's permanent discipline code the recommendation passed despite efforts by some faculty members to amend the report's provisions for open discipline committee hearings the pub lication of guilty students names and the composition of the discipline committee itself .!. donald ryan ad hoc committee member said that while he supports most of the committee's findings he has grave reservations about the increased size of the discipline commit tee and the substitution of a faculty member for the dean of students as com mittee chairman ryan said there was less chance of injustice because of errors m due pro cess under the old discipline regulations under past regulations the small number of committee members l 3 six of which were alternates — were able to gain a greater degree of experience and familiarity with discipline procedures because of the large number of cases they heard according to ryan the new discipline committee will be composed of 23 active members and a acuity chairman and may lack this experience ryan said the result could be an increase m appeals to the faculty appeals commit tee based on technical grounds or law suits against the university ryan called the new provisions for open hearings and the publication of names analogous to the elementary school situation where the naughty boy is forced to stand m front of the class s tin son stroup chairman of the ad hoc committee explained that the disci pline system has an educational func tion for the entire university therefore the publication of a guilty stu dent's name would execute this purpose and also have a deterrent effect in addi tion he said the committee wants to remove any misconceptions of the disci pline committee being a star chamber the size of the discipline committee was increased to alleviate the heavy case load associated with the former committee organization according to stroup in other business the faculty recom mended amending the university's reg ulation concerning curriculum transfers the new regulation effective with the class of 1987 requires that a student have at least sophomore stand ing and be m good academic standing before being able to transfer bet ween the university's three colleges according to the old regulation a transfer could be made by any student before the tenth day of any semester open budget cuts meeting attended by only 5 students by randy benfer five students attended an open meet ing tuesday entitled what can we do about federal budget cuts for educa tion " sponsored by forum xii and intended to elicit input from the univer sity community after the meeting lisa fisher 83 forum chairman said she was really disappointed with the attendance we publicized it very heavily she said noti ces were sent to all forum members flyers were sent to all gryphons and an ad was placed m the brown and while i guess it was just apathy she added although the warm spring weather may have had an effect . also m attendance were austin gavin executive consultant to the president three students covering the meeting as a journalism n course requirement and a brown and white reporter fisher who conducted the meeting said the forum steering committee recommended an open meeting because ••;• lot of people were asking of the festival ' o make a very enjoyable event tor all ' u we're calling it greek week because it is greek week jacobs added greeks may feel that this is then week said larry philippi assistant to he dean of students but they the stu dent activities council and the interfra ternitv council worked together to make it a week for everyone they are not separate events but as no events are for everyone the greek events are to complement springfest events it's missing all the alcohol-inspired events " he added and it will be a part of springfest with no overlapping or com peting events its really the events included m the sche dule when the committee was formed it was with understanding that we were to provide a week of activities geared towards all university students to offer a week of diverse decision to hold greek week after being approached by many stu dents who said they wanted the tradi tional greek events greek week will feature such tradi tional events as greeker-and-pie-eating but the greek week committee is also planning several new events m the hopes of giving the week a fresh new air jacobs said this year the ifc is work ing more closely with the panhellenic council and the two groups are planning several events together the week will also promote more pledge involvement than m other years according to jacobs ifc vs panhel m hoops and pledge pyramids are two of several new ideas planned for the week treasury aide economic growth possible through private markets reindustrialization called the key to a resurgence m economic growth can be achieved through the effective function ing of private markets according to nor man ture undersecretary of the treasury . . ture spoke to a capacity crowd m neville hall wednesday night m a lec ture sponsored by the fairchi d martindale center entitled supply side policies and reindustrialization while he said reindustrialization will improve production capabilities productivity real wages and total output ture said the reagan administration will not give industrial growth priority over other sec tors of the economy it is the very antithesis of the supply side analysis which is embodied m the reagan economic program to single out any particular kind of activity ture said instead he said the interaction of households and businesses m the market should determine the allocation of resources the government should not try to control the use of production capa bilities but enhance the function of the free market m allocating these resources the responsibility properly to be assigned to government is to seek to identify the sources of market failure and to seek to facilitate more efficient market operations ture said he explained that government policies which distort market signals particu larly prices should be eliminated to increase market efficiency ture outlined the reagan administra tion's four part program designed to achieve this goal first he said the number of complex regulations on
