a plan to split taylor hall into three special-interest houses was among five major building projects discussed at the physical planning and plant pp&p committee meeting on jan 15 a renovation package prepared by the taylor hall renovation committee was presented to the president's staff carry ing a price tag of 1.5 million in 1982 dol lars the development office will soon begin work on fund-raising for this pro ject it is hoped the construction part of the new century two campaign will begin during the summer of 198 and be completed by the fall of 1984 according to committee member john flynn assistant director of facilities ser vices and physical planning the building would serve as a resident college for spe by herbert fischer community relations staff to compile event calendar calendar location we will become somewhat of a central clearance place for informa tion to flow in and out harpersaid we are not an approving or disap proving activity center our only bus iness will be information proper clearance and conflict of business he noted that the forum is fully supportive of the centralization of the calendar and will continue to con struct the academic calendar adding that our job is to place other major events according to harper the total takeover of calendar coordination will begin in the fall of 82 the university has become increasingly pluralistic harper said prior to the change close to 30 people from the student activities see calendar page 5 by anne lol'ntzis in a memorandum distributed to administration faculty and students university provost arthur humph rey has announced that the coordina tion of the university calendar will become the responsibility of james harper director of community rela tions and his staff we need one place for the calendar to reside " humphrey said and one person to centrally collect informa tion community relations has had the responsibility for scheduling many major activities in the past in essence we are expanding mr harper's duties making him the calendar czar according to humphrey schedul ing conflicts and the failure to do any checking on the part of many organi zations necessitated a central taylor hall has been included in five major building projects discussed at the physical planning and plant committee meeting it has been proposed that lay lor he split into 1982 faculty committee suggests amendments to campus law projects planned for 5 university buildings by mark carroll several significant changes in the uni versity's law of the campus were recom mended in a report presented by the faculty ad hoc committee on discipline at mondays faculty meeting in a statement made to faculty members committee chairman stinson stroup assistant professor of education outlined the committee's report stroup said the committee's recom mendations were designed with three primary objectives in mind 1 the university's discipline system should be analagous with administrative justice systems rather than criminal jus tice systems 2 a broadening and clarification of the system's regulations is needed 3 the discipline system should be open to more university participation stroup said the report which he called see discipline page 3 a well-balanced document includes provisions which would allow the uni versity to act quickly and with author ity he also said the proposals would diminish the possibility of lawsuits relat ing to discipline cases one major change the committee sug gests is altering the present code of con duct which defines many specific violations to include instead a list of only eight categorical violations as an example stroup used specific violations such as robbery and assault these would be replaced by the general category violations against another person which the revised code would define stroup said the recommendation is meant to avoid situations where the dis cipline case officer has to torture the already tortured language of the pres bsw photo dy jon lfwis provost arthur humphrey speaks at monday's faculty meeting one of the recommendations made at the meeting was for several changes in the univer sity's law of the campus in other business it was announced that cash gifts to the university in the first six months of this year have succeeded last year's six month figure one would be to construct in stages especially during summer and interces sion he said another would be to use the small study rooms of extended hous ing during the fall semester we are also consulting bethlehem realtors for possi bly renting apartments on a one-year basis also pp&p was informed by anthony corallo director of facilities services and physical planning that the architec tural plans for the mart addition should be completed early in april 1982 the addition also funded through the new century two campaign is sche duled to cost 11.5 million and should be completed by the fall semester of 198(5 he said the 80,000-square-foot annex will be aesthetic but also functional featur see library page 12 ing passive solar design on the south wall to save on energy costs he said twenty-thousand square feet of lower floor space will accommodate adminis trative offices lowgradc hardware and a new computer center corallo indicated the proposed structure was designed by warner burns toan and lunde of new york city a feasibility study is also being con ducted on the proposed physics building addition and renovation according to corallo renovations would consist of remov ing the physics lecture room and deck ing it over with two levels of laboratory space he said a new lecture hall would seat between 150 and 300 students cial interest student scholar groups with a part of one section housing a faculty member and perhaps his family the faculty-in-residence member might do special programming for spe cial interests like bringing in speakers and do the work of a gryphon flynn added he noted that the university of pennsylvania and harvard university already have similar faculty-in residence programs each house will have a large lounge a kitchenette and educational and cultural facilities according to associate dean of students warren soare residence life coordinator and renovation committee member soare mentioned several options for housing the 150 students displaced dur ing construction
