last month's faculty meeting the motion to discontinue the gradu ate program was proposed by david lewis chairman of the modern foreign language department lewis said yes terday that a combination of several fac tors prompted him to propose the discontinuation of the program when he became department chair man in 1977 a bare minimum of faculty taught language courses lewis said this shortageof faculty todeal with the masters major and minor pro grams had caused problems for the demic standards of the department as a whole the program did not provide the stu dents with an adequate learning environ ment lewis said explaining that since it was based on a tutorial system there was no interaction among the students speaking for the german department professor arthur gardner summed up the problem as involving a lack of the necessary resources the department was relying upon teachers already over-teaching he said gardner also stressed that to encourage the degree in modern foreign languages it is not fair to the student unless he made aware of the job market situation the undergraduate program is our primary responsibility he said jerry king dean of the graduate school said the decision was not imposed on them the modern foreign language department from the outside the deci sion was very carefully and thoughtfully made i don't see it as a controversial issue king said as to the effect of this discontinuation will have on the rest of the graduate program king said the pro gram was not intricately involved in the rest of the graduate program the last two modern foreign language mas graduated in october lewis said we kept our commitment to all stu dents engaged with us and we're proud because of it both students and faculty worked under adverse conditions department in the past he said the suspension of the language requirement several years earlier resulted in the loss of the teaching assist ants he added during the last four or five years there has been increased enrollment in language courses yet no new permanent teaching posts have been added since lewis arrival he said as a result of lewis proposal a debate began among faculty members those who agreed with lewis believed the department's resources were being stretched too far and that they should concentrate solely on the undergraduate program he said others he added felt that the research
