by jeff aronson the rare book committee adopted several resolutions last week including one allowing the possible accessioning and deaccessioninfi of rare hooks pro vided the long range aim is improvement of the rare books collection any accessioning or deaccessioning must be conducted so as to assure donors and potential donors that their gifts will be valued used and protected the reso lution stated a job description for a curator of the collection was also approved along with a recommendation that the position be filled and appropriately funded as soon as possible the resolution recom mended that the committee act as a search committee for the selection of the permanent curator also adopted were recommendations tnat the rare book committee ue con sulted concerning any major item to be deaccessioned and that specific guide lines should be used in maintaining and improving the collection including allo cations for funds for upkeep and improvement a clear definition of rare book and a guide for determining what the collection should contain to contrib ute to the educational purposes of the university ross yates committee chairman and professorof government said the resolu tions were merely recommendations and would be presented to university president homing lewis for consideration yates said he felt the first order of bus iness if the resolutions were to be approved would be to appoint the curator we are making progress but i'll feel more sure when we appoint a curator yates said the second resolution states that the committee will act its a search commit tee for filling the slot for a permanent curator this would hopefully be a per manent budgetary slot one of the maintenance guidelines adopted by the committee proposed a system which would divide the collection into two parts books with a high market value which would need special security and books which are not as valuable but need special attention for preservation market value is not the only thing that determines the rarity of books yates said he also pointed out that although some items in the collection were scarce they did not have any real use to students financial losses poor attendance finish hourglass by sharon haggerty because of poor attendance and finan cial losses estimated at 5,300 the hour glass will not be continued next semester according to jeff aibel 82 hourglass committee chairman new forms of inexpensive entertain ment will replace the hourglass on a trial basis he noted programmed tv and more outside entertainment are some of the new ideas he said he explained that the special menu has been discontinued and waiter service cut back we will have a fresh start in the spring aibel said the cancellation is due to lack of attendance and lack of profit said richard metz director of auxiliary ser vices last year the hourglass was funded under the precept that it would draw income into the snack bar and would in turn pay for itself metz said university president effective july 1 according to an announcement made yesterday by harold mohler president of the board of trustees lewis is retiring this summer after serving as president for 18 years the decision was made after a year long search by the 11-member presiden tial search committee chaired by george kane chairman of the industrial engineering department this commit tee chose a final list of names from approximately 170 candidates and pres ented the list to the board of trustees for final selection of the board's decision kane saki that he was pleased with the speed and speaking for the committee very pleased with the choice likins a native of tracy california earned his b.s degree in civil engineer ing from stanford university in 1957 he later earned an s.m in civil engineering from massachusetts institute of tech nology in 1958 and a ph.d in engineering mechanics from stanford in 1965 he has served as development engi neer at the jet propulsion laboratory of the california institute of technology and subsequently on the faculties of the university of california los angeles 1964-76 and columbia university since 1976 before becoming provost of columbia he served as dean of the columbia uni versity school of engineering and app lied science from 1976 to 1980 prior to that he was an assistant dean and then associate dean of engineering at the uni versity
