drama of new york's east side by sidney kings ley author of men in white has been chosen by mustard and cheese student dramatic club as its first production of the year the play will be presented either dec 9 or dec 16 according to albert a rights director of dramatics tryouts for the cast will be held monday from 7:30 to 10:30 p m tuesday 4 to 6 p m and thurs day 4 to 6 p m and 7:30 to 10:30 p m at drown hall rights stated that freshmen will have as good a chance for roles as upper classmen because a number of young play ers will be needed he advised players to come out at the first try outs it was also announced that mus tard and cheese will present an original musical comedy next spring the last musical presented by the club two years ago was en titled knight in armor by will iam g dukek 38 and david hughes special student several copies of dead end have been placed on reserve in the library for those who wish to read the play before tryouts chooses officers eta sigma phi re-elects palmer as president robert b palmer arts 40 was re-elected president of the lehigh university branch of eta sigma phi national classical fraternity at the first meeting of the organ ization on friday sept 30 other officers elected were the following jules l moreau arts 40 vice president harold caplan arts 43 treasurer harold king arts 41 corresponding secretary leon h plante arts 41 record ing secretary and john f hamb lin arts 41 sergeant-at-arms william a mcdonald instructor in latin was elected an honorary member dr horace w wright head of the department of latin and dr earl crum associate pro fessor of greek are the faculty advisers of the society unlimited cuts granted to men on dean's list all academic seniors and juniors on the dean's list will be exempted from cut regula tions according to the new rules adopted this summer as explained in the pamphlet sent to every student the rule excusing all seniors from cut regulations has been rescinded the dean's list includes all juniors and seniors who have made a scholastic average of 3.00 or better during the pre ceding semester all other students will be warned after the accumulation of five unexcused absences put on cut probation after ten and suspended after thirteen 4 will attend debating meet delegates to help choose next year's topics ; callaghan will go lehigh university will send a delegation of four assures board of school's financial scholastic status lehigh man good risk the names of taylor and price halls were changed to taylor house and price house by the board of trustees at the founder's day meeting of the board this is in accordance with the new policy of distinguishing the names of dormitories by using the word house instead of hall in his annual educational report to the board pres c c williams said that lehigh is in sound finan cial condition in the quality of students ad mitted in the wholesomeness of student interests and value of their activities in the level of class in struction and in the scholarly cre ative work of the faculty the uni versity is constantly progressing he said in summarizing his report in all of these respects 1938-39 was one of distinct advance desire quality education president williams stated that the university is primarily inter ested in quality education and not in great increases in enrollment students at the bottom of the graduating class at lehigh are bet ter employment risks than those at the top of the lower third or even at the middle of classes in colleges which admit at a lower standard and which test progress with less rigor the fact was appar ent in the pennsylvania testing program sponsored by the carne gie foundation a few years ago some of the large industries are coming practically to discard the bottom third of graduates from in stitutions which admit solely on the basis of high school gradua tion it may be true that higher edu cation of the academic type is be ing overdone and that the country is being oversold on its merits president williams said in conclu sion colleges which may be driv en out of the standard academic field may be able to serve society well by shifting to other phases of either post-secondary or post elementary school training a very considerable amount of post-high school education may wisely be aimed at skilled performance of routine work rather than at crea tiveness nevertheless lehigh may well continue to offer a conserva tive education limited to educate able young men with confidence in their future student tutoring jobs are open says dean each year students who have made superior grades and who are in need of earning money to keep themselves in college offer their services as student tutors these tutors are paid at the rate of 1 an hour any students wishing to make themselves available as tutors should report to the office of the dean of undergraduates leaving their name and a state ment of the subjects which they feel themselves capable of tu toring together with a state ment of their qualifications students should also indicate past experience in tutoring and any evidence they may present regarding the successfulness of their work these students will be investigated through the de partments concerned and their names included on the list maintained in the office of the dean of undergraduates for recommendation t o students inquiring about tutors in vari ous subjects whenever a student needs the help of a tutor he can come to this office for suggestions either regarding student tutors or re garding professional tutors whose
