lehigh university brown and white vol !)*. - no 31 bethlehem pa tuesday february 10 1981 215 861-41k4 school of education plans to counter enrollment drop bv hkrkfht fischer training graduate students for the needs of exceptional learners is one aspect of a three part plan of the univer sity's school ot education according to perry zirkel dean of the school of education the plan which recently received pos itive review by the university hoard of tnistees visiting committee will also focus on technology in education and stall training it is aimed al countering the national decline in the number ol stu dents wanting to become teachers zir kel said lie said interning graduate students will join tones with the eastern pen nsylvania school districts in response to a pennsylvania state law which requires special programs for gifted children it will essentially involve two faculty programs serving exceptional students part-time for a period of four to five weeks next year zirkel said the pro gram will rely on field trips independent study mini-science fairs and nuclear energy projects the second part of the school of educa tion's plan which emphasizes the use of the microcomputer in teaching includes plans for an educational technology laboratory for student use software development and applied research in addressing itself to exceptional learners the school of education's plan encompasses all students with special needs including adults a clinic has heen constructed in existing facilities to train advanced students and a diagnostic set vice for referrals in fields such as career counseling and psychological evalua tions has been introduced in the a re i of stall development the school plans to expand its course offer ings for teachers and school staff in localities where they are needed for example a course in school law will be offered this spring in berks county via the interactive television the course in school law is an exam ple of two of the three prongs aimed at teachers and administrators zirkel commented the course will he taught oil campus and has arisen because of the increasing impact of court decisions involving students teachers and administrators the entire three-part plan was deve loped hy task forces of education faculty members and reviewed and put together by a university-wide committee ol faculty and administrators zirkel cited several reasons for the decline in student enrollment in the school of education one factor he said is fewer teaching jobs in the region as a result schools are attracting older per sonnel that commute he said another reason he said is economics lehigh as a private university has sig nificantly higher tuition rates than a pub lic institution the gap is widening between the cost of public and private education zirkel added that as older students complete their requirements in the school of kducation fewer and fewer new students are enrolling this creates a situation analogous to mining administrators must work harder to dig up more education students li l*-,.,1.i • . h 7 •-• - ■*.- . *.' ■people have many views of what engineer wrestling is all about hut none of them are quite like this whether in lhe first row of the stands of stabler arena or atop the unobstructed catwalk a lehigh fan will usually see his man on top responsibility for hourglass to be delegated by doug mattfeld forum xl's ad-hoc social alternatives commmittee by definition a temporary organization is presently considering where to delegate its responsibility for the hourglass student-based groups are receiving the greatest consideration we want the power to remain with the students said jeff aibel 82 chairman of the committee we are also looking for a group with wide-based support the creation of a new committee is also a possibility aibel added the student activities council sac is interested in taking over responsibility for the hourglass according to sac president pete fioretti b hopefully we'll be able to take this the hourglass under our jurisdiction and continue its success the first hourglass was successful attendance-wise but lost money because ol start-up problems said richard i gave at the office . . . and at neville lounge r.k.w photo by martin rebh'jn hob hover was one of many braves who donated 125 pints of blood to the millet bloodmohile thursday the donation was sponsored by the lehigh university volunteers set snack bar page 1 inside dorm damages p 8 bisons win p 12
