are known to be considering lehigh as an alma mater acceptances to date constitute abundant evidence of the fact that this fourth annual sub-freshman day will attract a far larger number than any of its pre decessors the young men will be the guests of the university from the time of their arrival saturday morning un til the close of the program around 9 o'clock in the evening donald roe acting program the features being a baseball game with lafayette at 2 o'clock and a lacrosse game with rutgers immediately after the baseball game ends in previous years one of the fea tures of sub-freshman day was the dinner sponsored by the lehigh home club at the hotel bethlehem to which all sub-freshmen were in vited due to the fact that the at tendance of prospective students has grown in such large propor tions this plan became impracti cal for the present year and an in novation is being tried this year each sub-freshman will be assigned when he registers to one of the fra ternity houses for dinner many of the sub-freshmen have friends in the various fraternity houses who have already invited them to be guests of their chapters these men will of course be assigned to the fraternities in question the sub freshmen who have no previous in vitation to a fraternity house will be assigned to whichever chapter can accommodate them this as signment of guests to the various fraternities is in charge of a com mittee headed by a committee of members of the interfraternity council of which ellis oiler is chairman rally in evening . the final event of the day's pro gram will be a mammoth rally in the game room of taylor gymna sium to which the entire student body will turn out accompanied by their sub-freshmen guests a pro gram of entertainment has been ar ranged by a committee headed by and a a tate head coach the lehigh band will be present and several wrestling bouts will be staged although the formal program of sub-freshman day concludes with the rally a good many subfreshmen are expected to stay over sunday as guests of their personal friends in college a college sing has been scheduled for 3 o'clock sunday af ternoon seventeen trombonists playing from the historical belfry of the moravian tower will usher in the thirtieth anniversary of the beth lehem bach choir friday afternoon may 16 they will play the melo dies which are later to be sung by the choir for half an hour preced ing the festival which begins at 4 p m standard time in packer mem orial chapel and is concluded the following day saturday may 17 in this traditional manner the mo ravian trombone choir establishes the spirit and mood of the day dr j fred wolle famous singer who has led the bach choir since its conception in 1900 will once more lead tfie chorus of approxi mately 240 voices through the beau tiful and solemn passages of john sebastian bach's immortal music on friday there will be two ses sions consisting of ten cantatas never before sung here in bethle hem and many never before sung in america these cantatas are called chorales the name being de rived from the fact that they each contain an old hymn centuries old and arranged in later years by bach these will be followed on saturday by the annual rendering of the composer's great b minor mass members chosen for voices the choir is composed of people from 18 different localities in the vicinity of bethlehem including reading mauch chunk and prince ton the men and women of the choir are chosen solely for the quality of their voices many can not read notes dr wolle prefers singers without previous musical training for trained singers often possess mannerisms which are ruinous to a perfect blend of voices the chorus sings as a unit and the effect depends primarily upon dr wolle's interpretation the singers rehearse from the beginning of oc tober to the middle of may the last few weeks they practice almost daily about 40 members of the phila delphia orchestra will accompany the singers this year dr wolle will lead the chorus from a piano rather than from the organ as has been his custom for several years dr thomas edgar shields direc tor of music at lehigh will take his place at the organ all solo parts will be taken by individual soloists choir sings only bach music the bach choir sings the music of bach exclusively dr wolle hav ing spent most of his life studying this great master musician the only exception to this rule was the singing of the star spangled ban ner by the choir during the world war an endeavor was made to sing the masses of bach in 1892 but the singers found the music too diffi cult and refused to go on dr wolle finally taught them to sing the difficult music by beginning with the last two measures of the ending chords and thus working up from the end to the beginning since 1900 he has continually used this method many famous people are num bered each year among the audi ence mrs theodore roosevelt has not missed a performance for many years will hold public rehearsal on the monday preceding the performance a rehearsal will be held open to the general public the following monday a final re hearsal will be held at which friends of the members of the choir are usually present there are al ways a few hundred extra seats at this final rehearsal to which the public is invited the program will not be broad cast this year as previously rumor ed theta kappa phi fraternity an nounces the pledging of g m kal eda e e 32 of mahanoy city pa h j sweeney eng 33 of pittston pa and t j w tied eken c e 31 of camden n j initiation for these pledges will be held next fall eclipse arrived here on time keeping on computed schedule eclipse changing into what is known as an annular eclipse in canada other means of observing the eclipse could have been used rather than screen method solar attach ments to the telescope are the usual method the boiling which was notice able in monday's observation is a common phenomena and is a great handicap in surveying air being heated changes in density which cause light to be refracted giving a wavy appearance or an effect as if the air was boiling the next eclipse in this locality will occur agust 1932 it will be over 90 per cent total the last ecipse seen at bethlehem occurred jan 24 1925 and was nearly total monday's eclipse was just over half total the sayre observatory is open thursday evenings when interest ing stars and celestial bodies are observed students are invited on these open nights may 8 and 15 are the only remaining dates and on these evenings the moon and jupiter will be observed weather permitting calculations which were made at lehigh for the beginning of the so lar eclipse of last monday were found to differ by an extremely small amount with the actual time of beginning as recorded at the sayre observatory the difference between the com puted time and the observated was due to error in recording the actual moment of contact which could not be determined precisely because of boiling an image of the sun was gotten through the telescope and projected on a white screen due to the heating of the sun the border of this image was slightly indistinct which made the exact time of con tact difficult to determine the er ror was very slight however and was not due to a mistake in compu tations the eclipse of monday was 51 per cent total in this locality it was total in california where an army plane was used to race with the shadow so that more photo graphs could be obtained of the eclipse when total the path of to tality extended across the states of california nevada and idaho the henry j forsyth was elected to the position of sporting editor of the brown and white by the board of publications yesterday he will serve for the unexpired spring term filling day was the dinner sponsored by the lehigh home club at the hotel bethlehem to which all sub-freshmen were in vited due to the fact that the at tendance of prospective students has grown in such large propor tions this plan became impracti cal for the present year and an in novation is being tried this year each sub-freshman will be assigned when he registers to one of the fra ternity houses for dinner many of the sub-freshmen have friends in the various fraternity houses who have already invited them to be guests of their chapters these men will of course be assigned to the fraternities in of the moravian tower will usher in the thirtieth anniversary of the beth lehem bach choir friday afternoon may 16 they will play the melo dies which are later to be sung by the choir for half an hour preced ing the festival which begins at 4 p m standard time in packer mem orial chapel and is concluded the following day saturday may 17 in this traditional manner the mo ravian trombone choir establishes the spirit and mood of the day dr j fred wolle famous singer who has led the bach choir since its conception in 1900 will once more lead tfie chorus of approxi mately 240 voices through the beau tiful and solemn passages of john sebastian bach's immortal music on friday there will be two ses sions consisting of ten cantatas never before sung here in bethle hem and many never before sung in america these cantatas are called chorales the name being de rived from the fact that they each contain an old hymn centuries old and arranged in later years by bach these will be followed on saturday by the annual rendering of the composer's great b minor mass members chosen for voices the choir is composed of people from 18 different localities in the vicinity of bethlehem including reading mauch chunk and prince ton the men and women of the choir are chosen solely for the quality of their voices many can not read notes dr wolle prefers singers without previous musical training for trained singers often possess mannerisms which are ruinous to a perfect blend of voices the chorus sings as a unit and the effect depends primarily upon dr wolle's interpretation the singers rehearse from the beginning of oc tober to the middle of may the last few weeks they practice almost daily about 40 members of the phila delphia orchestra will accompany the singers this year dr wolle will lead the chorus from a piano rather than from the organ as has been his custom for several years dr thomas edgar shields direc tor of music at lehigh will take his place at the organ all solo parts will be taken by individual soloists choir sings only bach music the bach choir sings the music of bach exclusively dr wolle hav ing spent most of his life studying this great master musician the only exception to this rule was the singing of the star spangled ban ner by the choir during the world war an endeavor was made to sing the masses of bach in 1892 but the singers found the music too diffi cult and refused to go on dr wolle finally taught them to sing the difficult music by beginning with the last two measures of the ending chords and thus working up from the end to the beginning since 1900 he has continually used this method many famous people are num bered each year among the audi ence mrs theodore roosevelt has not missed a performance for many years will hold public rehearsal on the monday preceding the performance a rehearsal will be held open to the general public the following monday a final re hearsal will be held at which friends of the members of the choir are usually present there are al ways a few hundred extra seats at this final rehearsal to which the public is invited the program will not be broad cast this year as previously rumor ed theta kappa phi fraternity an nounces the pledging of g m kal eda e e 32 of mahanoy city pa h j sweeney eng 33 of pittston pa and t j w tied eken c e 31 of camden n j initiation for these pledges will be held next fall eclipse arrived here on time keeping on computed schedule eclipse changing into what is known as an annular eclipse in canada other means of observing the eclipse could have been used rather than screen method solar attach ments to the telescope are the usual method the boiling which was notice able in monday's observation is a common phenomena and is a great handicap in surveying air being heated changes in density which cause light to be refracted giving a wavy appearance or an effect as if the air was boiling the next eclipse in this locality will occur agust 1932 it will be over 90 per cent total the last ecipse seen at bethlehem occurred jan 24 1925 and was nearly total monday's eclipse was just over half total the sayre observatory is open thursday evenings when interest ing stars and celestial bodies are observed students are invited on these open nights may 8 and 15 are the only remaining dates and on these evenings the moon and jupiter will be observed weather permitting calculations which were made at lehigh for the beginning of the so lar eclipse of last monday were found to differ by an extremely small amount with the actual time of beginning as recorded at the sayre observatory the difference between the com puted time and the observated was due to error in recording the actual moment of contact which could not be determined precisely because of boiling an image of the sun was gotten through the telescope and projected on a white screen due to the heating of the sun the border of this image was slightly indistinct which made the exact time of con tact difficult to determine the er ror was very slight however and was not due to a mistake in compu tations the eclipse of monday was 51 per cent total in this locality it was total in california where an army plane was used to race with the shadow so that more photo graphs could be obtained of the eclipse when total the path of to tality extended across the states of california
