who was consulted by the administration in july based on stam's recommendation to sell some books to raise money for the library addition the administration said in september we do not see any alternative to the sale of some portion of the rare book collection but after studying the collection since december traister said he thinks that would be a mistake my recom mendation basically is that the univer sity's collection if properly handled the stacks and removing books not necessarily rare but of research value and fragile from the 18th 17th and very few from the 16th century the most valuable one he found on the stacks he estimated had a market value of 900 other books he found in the storehouse on fourth street and in storage in lind erman when they were removed from the conservatively twice that many and i wouldn't be surprised if it were three times some of these he found by examining could be a very important one both nationally and internationally the uni versity might want to sell all or part of it but i think it would be more valuable if it were exploited here there is a potential to use it in the university — with increased staff there has already been a constant increase in use of it by various groups if the university wants to spend money to put the collection on the proper footing instead of having it limp along it could be an extremely valuable resource . . or if not it should get rid of the whole kit and-ka boodle stam also recommended that if the university sold one-fourth to one-third of the collection it could raise several mil lion
