lehigh university brown and white vol 75 — no 46 bethlehem pa — friday may 1 1964 866-0331 student life may propose change in liquor rules a change in the rules governing the use of alcoholic beverages on campus may be forthcoming soon the brown and white learned wednesday from several reliable sources the university committee on student life is now ccnsidering a draft to this effect which may soon be sent to members of the faculty and administra tion the recommendation is the result of the com nrttee's consideration of social regulations during the past year the resolution which originated in the student life committee will probably be forwarded to the faculty on monday the same sources indicated it should be noted that the proposed action will not be the first change in alcoholic beverage rules on campus in 1963 the following statements were dropped from the partial summary of university regulations distributed to freshmen alcoholic beverages found in student quarters will be con sidered prima-facie evidence of violation by the occupant(s of the quarters violations will be the subject of disciplinary action a summary of the recent extension of the state liquor control laws was added to the regulations in the september 1963 handbook for students no reference is made to regulations prohibiting possession of liquor in student living quarters it says drinking of alcoholic beverages outside of residential buildings is prohibited the carrying of alcoholic beverages between residential buildings is also prohibited no alcoholic beverages are per mitted in non-residential buildings including taylor stadium and grace hall queen for the weekend — happiness gleams on the face of joanie alperin as she is queened the 1964 spring houseparty queen return to the lehigh university cam pus saturday may 9 as guest conductor of the lehigh university con cert band at its annual pops concert goldman one of america's most widely knowni conductors last visited the university as the guest conductor for the winter concert last year goldman is the son of the founder of new york city's famed gold man hand and conducts that band in its summer concert series in central park he was born in new york city was educated in the public schools of that city and was graduated from columbia college with honors in 1930 following graduation he studied under a special columbia fel lowship ini fine arts and archaeology from 1937 to 1956 goldman was associate conductor of the gold man band after the death of his father in 1956 he became conductor dodd gives self-portrait philosophy of art the process of change and the hope for growth add joy to paint ing lamar dodd visiting phi beta kappa scholar declared tuesday night dodd a distinguished american painter is head of the department of arts at the university of georgia speaking before an audi ence of nearly 100 in the os bcurne room university center he concluded his two-day stay on campus with a description of the painter and his attitudes the painter's thoughts about art his understanding of it his appreciation of his own efforts and the efforts of others of all ages and nations his creations regard less of the medium of expression are the result of the sum total of that painter he said in explaining how sum total affects the growth of the artist dodd said : the traits and charac teristics of the painter's inherit ance his education including pro fessional training the influence of his environmental situation his contacts and exchanges of ideas and theories are all factors that are authoritative in nature — fac tors that have a direct bearing upon his mental emotional and spiritual growth or retrogression the nature of man embraces all of those qualities and influences and the total man is complex he went on to explain that this complexity is intensified when man as an artist becomes more involved with creative thought and action dodd then discussed his own ideals and standards for painting he described his own philosophy about life and art as one of moderation and simplicity i offer no apologies for this attitude he said it is one that respects simplicity and sincerity in all things with the confidence that through simplicity and sincer ity elements of worthwhileness and greatness might be realized in a discussion illustrated with slides dodd traced his own evolu tion as an artist he showed the changes in his works from child hood through the progressive in fluence of study of the old mas see painter page 3 houseparty hill hopping — party-goers enjoy themselves both inside and outside one of the fraternity houses in sayre park last saturday night this scene was duplicated at about every house that night inter racial unit backed by arcadia arcadia unanimously approved a resolution at its last meeting endorsing the bethlehem com munity civic league and offering student support of the league's objectives the community civic league is a group formed to better inter racial and inter-community rela tions v roger digilio 64 president of arcadia called the league a progressive approach to problems which invariably arise in our mod ern urban
