an nounced sunday the drive fell 750 short of the 3,500 goal but topped last year's contributions by almost 300 as students pushed the total to its highest level for the past 5 years the average contribution of leo nard resdents also was comfortably above the 3.45 average which won last year kahlow expressed pleasure at the success of this year's cam paign he pointed out that the stu dent contributions do not include donations by the faculty arcadia the interfraternity council and the residence halls council or the proceeds of the ugly man con test runner-up to leonard hall were dravo c-3 with an average of 5.17 per man and dravo b-3 with an average of 3.79 the top 10 living groups will re ceive priority seating at the lafay ette football game saturday campus chest funds will be do nated to the refugee scholarship program the crossroads africa program and several local char ities library features gettysburg exhibit sheltermate no 20 three university chemists have filed for a patent on their dis covery of a new method for con trolling weather by chemical seeding of cloud formations dr albert c zettlemoyer pro fessor of chemistry dr john j chessick research assistant profes sor of chemistry and dr noubar tcheurekdjian former research assistant have discovered several fallacies in current cloud-seeding operations for the past 17 years physicists have been seeding clouds with silver iodide on the theory that the chemical which has a crystal structure close to that of ice is hydrophyllic or water-accepting the three lehigh chemists have declared the theory erroneous they have found silver iodide to be hydrophobic or water-repelling furthermore they have invented a series of highly-efficient cloud seeding agents which are less ex researcher to discuss quiet sun dr martin a pomerantz of swarthmore college will address sigma xi national research honor ary on the international years of the quiet sun — iqsy at 8 p.m thursday in the osbourne room university center pomerantz a physicist and ex plorer is chairman of the u.s committee for the international years of the quiet sun for 1964-65 a graduate of syracuse univer sity pomerantz has been director of the bartol research foundation of the franklin institute in swarthmore since 1959 he joined the foundation as research assis tant in 1938 he received his m.s from the university of pennsyl vania and his ph.d from temple university pomerantz was a fulbright scholar and a visiting professor at muslim university aligarh uni ted provinces india during 1952 53 in addition to serving as edi tor of the journal of the franklin institute he is on the faculty at swarthmore peter j d'alesandre 64 and thomas gramley 67 both of leonard hall were treated and re leased for possible food poisoning friday evening at st luke's hos pital d'alesandre and gramley said the hospital staff was uncertain whether the illness was caused by food poisoning or a virus infection hospital treats 2 sick students in commemoration of the 100 th anniversary of the gettysburg ad dress of nov 19 1863 the library is exhibiting a portion of its collection of documents and books pertaining to that event many of the items shown are from a collection of books and pamph lets purchased from the estate of the late john r bartlett secretary of state of rhode island bartlett was the rhode island representative to the committee ap pointed by pennsylvania gov curtin to establish the soldiers national cemetery at gettysburg shortly after the 1863 battle the exhibit deals with three phases of the gettysburg story curtin's committee to establish the cemetery the gettysburg cattle monument commissioned by the board of managers of the cemetery and the dedi cation of the cemetery at which lincoln made his address included in the collection is a document signed by gov james y smith of rhode island appointing bartlett to the committee also on display are a public an nouncement issued by the board of managers advertising for designs for the gettysburg battle monu ment a number of drawings which were submitted but not accepted a print from a magazine of the period showing the design which was selected drawn by j g bat terson and a program of the cere mony at which the cornerstone of the monument was laid shown with the program for the dedication of the cemetery is a first edition of the oration made that day by edward everett which in cludes the dedicatory remarks made by president lincoln later known as the gettysburg address jean ie — a pert and lively sophomore at wellesley jeanie visited the l.u crossroads africa representative in 64 exchange views following dr skinner's address on pan-africanism hinting that the united states government isn't making the best usy of its peace corps funds operation crossroads africa founder and director james h robinson said saturday night that given the same amount of money more people with better training could be sent to africa under the crossroads program than under the peace corps program robinson addressing the closing banquet of the operation cross roads conference here this weekend told the gathering that many peace corps personnel are inadequately prepaid to assist in african education he said that peace corps personnel are freqently sent to aid elementary school teachers in africa without having had any previous experience in the field of education ciossroaders robinson said almost always have a good back ground in teaching when they go into foreign ai'eas to help in educa tion with a six-year program robinson estimated that crossroads could have m;;ny more trained personnel in countries where today they have only a few and where peace corps presently has many ill-trained people assistance to education in africa demands
