hungry parents — after a morning of touring the campus freshmen parents were treated to a traditional grace hall luncheon freshman parents visit weekend attracts 2,000 the goal for the campus chest campaign which began sunday is 3,500 a minimum contribution of three dollars per student has been requested the 10 living groups contributing the most will get priority in choice of seats for the lehigh-lafayette football game last year's largest contributor price hall gave 3.45 per student the campaign will end saturday at noon so priority lists can be completed by 8 a.m monday all conributions must be turned in by saturday total contributions will be divided into two main divisions stu dent concerns will receive 85 per cent while the other 15 per cent will be donated to local charities including the bethlehem united fund money directed to student concerns will consist of three parts the first category lehigh student projects will be given 40 per cent projects to receive a donation are the refugee scholarships pro gram to sponsor a cuban refugee as a student next year the crossroads africa program to send three lehigh students to africa next summer and the allentown volunteers group which does hospital work the world university service to receive the second part of the student-designated total will be given 30 per cent this organization helps in the operations of universities in many countries the final 15 per cent of donations directed to student concerns is broken into contributions to the united negro college fund the na tional scholarship service and the fund for negro students each group sponsors needy and qualified negro students throughout the country the 15 per cent of total contributions designated for local charities will be donated to the bethlehem united fund cancer fund march of dimes heart fund muscular dystrophy and red cross see chest page 7 crossroads africa group to meet this weekend vast amount of classified material and the still larger amount of un explored territory in a particular field other speakers on the panel were dr joseph a dowling asso ciate professor of history dr richard g malsberger associate professor of biology and dr james r frakes assistant pro fessor of english in describing the challenges of business education today dr her bert m diamond acting dean of the college of business adminis tration told freshmen and their parents we must train our men at one and the same time for en tering into an immediate job while bearing in mind that we expect our graduates to rise high in the area of excutive confidence in the course of time other speakers in the business program were prof john s steckbeck assistant director of see frosh page 6 physical education the rev ray mond e fuessle university chap lain wilbur j blew manager of university dining services and william j bowman a senior in business administration and a representative of the gryphon so ciety dr alan s foust dean of the college of engineering contrasted the needs of engineering education of the past with those of today during that college's special pro gram there is small advantage today in spending signficant time introducing our students to the devices techniques and systems of the past he said we must develop in them a willingness to meet and to analyze new prob lems hence the training we give them is much more basic than was the somewhat empirical approach of some engineering education a more than 2,000 parents sons and faculty participated in satur day's activities at the annual three-day freshman parents week-end which began friday night and continued sunday morn ing with special programs in the college of engineering the col lege of arts and science and the college of business administra tion dr willard r yates dean of the college of arts and science served as moderator for a panel discussion at the college's program devoted to work in the arts and science in introducing the topic dean yates said the work in the col lege of arts and science involves two parts one is study in breadth which acquaints the students with subjects and methodologies in a variety of fields within the arts and sciences the other is a study in depth which gives the student an understanding of the ryan seriously injured in automobile accident sheltermate no 19 it's been a long time — with convocation and then satur day on the promises and anxieties of africa's future more than 100 undergraduate and graduate students from 22 col leges and universities are expected to attend the conference other experts to discuss various aspects of africa will include dr elliot p skinner professor of an thropology at columbia univer sity who will give an address on pan-africanism saturday morn ing e jefferson murphy vice president of the african-american institute will lead a conference on french-speaking africa dr ibrahim mansoury professor of mental health and child develop ment at mills college of educa tion will head a conference on the problems of northern africa harry langworthy of the boston university african studies pro gram will lead the central and south africa conference dr skinner will discuss english speaking east africa and dr mar tin kilson lecturer on government at harvard will work with the english-speaking west africa dis cussion group all of these panels will be held on saturday after the program will include films and other panel discussions the panels will feature participants from lehigh in the 1963 operation crossroads africa program and he suffered head and chest in juries is a two-car collision at the intersection of seidersville road and mountain drive south just before midnight as of late sunday prof ryan was listed in serious condition at st luke's hospital police chief william repyneck of lower saucon township said a witness told him that ryan was traveling south on mountain drive when an automobile driven by nicholas s defiore jr 21 of bethlehem r 3 went through a stop sign into the path of ryan's car one of professor ryan's two passengers was admitted to st luke's hospital another rider and two persons in the defiore auto were treated and released defiore was charged with run ning through a stop sign and driv ing too fast for road conditions the intersection was wet at the time of the accident j donald ryan prof j donald ryan head of
