world communications powers and problems — j3m?s c hagerty of american broadcasting company speaks during the third symposium saturday morning with hagerty are dr kenneth g mckay seymour k freidin sen hugh scott and prof john j karakash moderator founder's award goes to 13 citizens centennial convocation leaves many memories editorial by eric r gutsche the centennial convocation is now history but it has left a trail of memories there were highlights and there were disappoint ments those who had been looking forward to residents of the lehigh valley recognized many of the names of the 13 local citizens who were cited saturday night by lehigh university for their outstanding contributions to the community those who received the awards for their civic work were rolland l adams the president and pub startling revelations and major policy pronounce ments by the eminent figures assembled for the oc casion were disappointed but those who asked no more than thoughtful statements heard what they came to hear among the disappointments was the attendance grace hall was never filled to capacity although the lower floor came close during the saturday afternoon panel almost 3,000 people turned out that afternoon to hear dr edward teller arthur dean roger blough and dr edward pollard discuss the exercise of man's incredible powers but no more than 2,500 attended any of the three other symposia buses and a convoy of limousines took guests to dinners held each night in the hotel bethlehem the hotel its lobby decorated with photomurals and its main ballroom hung with gold and white draperies was a crowded scene of arrivals depart ures dinner speeches and conversing guests those guests who could not be accommodated in the main ballroom were served in adjoining rooms scattered with closed circuit television closed circuit coverage was maintained in grace hall throughout the convocaton even though it was not used philadelphia's three television stations and its two major newspapers covered the convocation as did many local radio stations and newspapers na tional wire services received coverage from univer sity sources none of the panels during the convocation held their prepared speeches to the time allotted de bate and discussion following the speeches was there icrc very brief discourse among panelists was limited to far less than the hour allocated for dis cussion the success or failure of the centen nial convocation cannot be determined until 1 chigh's entire centennial cele bration is over a few conclusions however are obvious at this time the lack of interest on the part of the stu dent body was the fault of no one except the students themselves and perhaps the faculty to some degree the an councement over a week ago that some classes would be called off on friday morning and that others might be sus pended at the discretion of the instruc tors was an open invitation to many students to take the weekend off not everyone took this attitude of course at each symposium the num ber of people attending decreased grad ually from a nearly capacity crowd on the lower floor of grace hall on friday morning to a disappointing 1,500 or so cii saturday night there never arose see editorial page 2 lisher of the bethlehem globe times william g barthold pres ident judge of the court of com mon pleas of northampton coun ty dr joseph n corriere m.d chief of surgery at st luke's hos pital mrs helena des couch trustee of moravian college ray mond s haupert president of mo founder's award ravian college john h leh al lentown businessman edmund f martin vice-president of bethle hem steel corp the most rever end joseph mcshea bishop of the see of allentown charles e oakes chairman and chief execu te officer of pennsylvania power and light co leonard p pool director and president of air pro ducts and chemicals inc harri son w prosser hellertown busi nessman the right reverend frederick j warnecke bishcp of the episcopal diocese of bethle hem and joseph s young pres ident of lehigh portland cement co the awards were made by dr harvey a neville who read the oitations and presented each citee with a plague which bore a repro duction of an original tablet por traying asa packer founder of the university the founder's award was pre sented for distinguished contribu tions to the welfare and progress of the lehigh valley the citees were escorted to the platform in grice hall by a mem ber of the centennial class presi dent neville then read the citation and presented the plaque following the presentation the honorable paul martin secretary of state for external affairs of canada delivered the final address of the convocation lehigh university brown and white ! mmwmmmmm ¦¦'¦¦¦' vol 75 — no 13 bethlehem pa — tuesday october 29 1963 866-0331 houseparty queen contest see p 3 centennial convocation issue no 3
