glee club singers face busy season shortly before frederick r kappel began the keynote address at the hotel bethlehem dinner last night a four-engined air force plane touched down at a.b.e airport aboard the aircraft was general maxwell d taylor chairman of the united states joint chiefs of staff as he stepped off the plane general taylor stood for a brief moment with lt col fred w schumach er professor of military science and lt col james w caskey professor of air science at lehigh at that time the brown and white asked gen eral taylor why he had decided to accept the in vitation of the trustees of lehigh to attend the convocation some of my good friends were involved in it and i was proud to associate myself with the people who are running the convocation taylor com men,ted i'm very happy and honored to be here he said following the taking of the photos which appear in this issue general taylor and his staff ac companied by representatives from the military and air science departments of lehigh departed for the hotel bethlehem in govern ment vehicle general taylor took part in the first symposium at 10 a.m today discussing the problems of peace and war note this is the third and last of a scries of articles by lehigh representatives to the crossroads africa program by jeffrey w enck sierra leone originally the ad ministrative center of british west africa was established in 1787 as a home for freed slaves today sierra leone enjoys a quiet peace ful existence as an independent nation unlike many of africa's emerg ing nations sierra leone won its independence from great britain calmly and constitutionally it be came free on april 27 1961 sir milton marai its prime minister is the only african leader who to my knowledge can travel through out his country without a body guard sierra leone which is a little larger than west virginia is a fairly poor country rice is the staple crop but not enough is pro duced to feed the 2.5 million people however the awakening spirit of africa is in sierra leone the spirit is willing and the body is developing strength it was in this country that our group of 10 americans and one canadian spent our summer work ing on a crossroads africa project one group consisted of five girls five boys and the chaplain of the university of denver who was our leader we met him for the first time at an orientation program five days before leaving for africa our first experience was wait ing for us when we arrived in conakry and no arrangements had been made for us the american embassy and crossroads officials did some quick maneuvering and made arrangements for overnight ac commodations in a secondary school and for a bus trip to free town sierra leone the next morn ing the trip should have taken four to eight hours but we arrived in freetown some 26 hours after leav ing conakry in spite of the length of the see summer page 4 see l u page 3 and the coronation theme from boris godunov will be sung with simmons college by chuck tschampion lehigh's goodwill ambassador the glee club will perform eight concerts this season according to robert cutler director the glee club presented its first concert of the season two weeks ago on the saturday of upperclass parent's weekend each concert includes a basic program of sacred and secular music during the first half and folk songs popular songs and glees after intermission the glee is a type of love song one disadvantage facing an all male chorus is the great majority of choral music for mixed choruses cutler said this hard ship is overcome by scheduling combined performances with sev er 1 women's colleges he added the glee club will combine with vassav's choir for two christmas vesper services and other con certs with smith and simmons college are on this year's agenda a large number of symphonic length works similar to last year's performance of oedipus rex are to be performed this year in co operation with several women's colleges cutler said valdi's gloria will be staged at smith and vassar haydn's te deum general taylor arrives — sitting beside lt col james w caskey general maxwell d taylor left heads for hotel after arriving at a.b.e airport last night on government flight lehigh university brown and white 900 hear kappel deliver keynote of convocation : ... vxvftwv : ;
