lehigh's 10th annual upperclass parent's weekend will get under way tomorrow morning with the presentation of seperate programs by the three undergraduate colleges an estimated 3,500 parents and their sons will attend the varied program designed to provide parents with a look at the academic and extracurricular life of the university the college of arts and sciences will present an actual class in literature of the romantic era dr robert h hopkins assistant professo ¦ of english will conduct the class beginning at 10 a.m in the physics lab auditorium the student investment fund will bo discussed in the program presented by the college of business administration at 10:15 in drown hall 207 dr leon e krouse assistant professor of finance will direct a student committee consisting of james miller chairman vincent larger kirk crewman vail frost larry posst richard rex and russel riggs dr alan s foust dean of the college of engineering will oprn the engineering program in packard lab auditorium at 10:15 later in the morning parents of engineering students can attend departmental programs the departments of chemistry physics mechanics chemical en gineering and civil engineering will condut open houses with discus sions and demonstrations of laboratory and research facilities prof john j karakash head of the department of electrical en gineering will direct demonstrations in the fields qf electronic com munications and digital systems the department of industrial engineering will present a panel dis cussion led by prof arthur f gould head of the department the panelists are professors wallace j richardson sutton monroe george 1 kane and william a smith luncheon will be served in grace hall from 11:30 to 1 o'clock parents will be the guests of the university at the lehigh-gettysburg varsity football game immediately following in taylor stadium saturday's program will conclude with the annual autumn con cert at 8:15 p.m in grace hall parents are invited to united states — from california to connecticut to florida we had met only five days before at an orientation sessions in new bruns wick n.j we went to africa with differ ent hopes ambitions and expecta tions we came home with a vari ety of impressions experiences and thoughts yet we all had a common pur pose to show at the grass-roots level that america does care that we truly want to establish a bridge of friendship and assistance be tween the two countries our project was the completion of an assembly hall at a leadership training center near arusha tan note operation crossroads af rica is a privately financed work study program which sends students and teachers to african countries to spend a summer working with afri can students the students build schools and clinics meet with civic government business and church leaders study the social political and economic structure of the coun try and travel two years ago arcadia sponsored one student in 1962 two lchu/h students participated last summer three were sent including richard miller 65 the author of the follozv ing article by richard miller oldonyo sambu a village spread out on the side of a 15,000 foot mountain was our home for the two months we were in africa we were 10 americans — six boys 150 to receive degrees at founders day rites ganyika tanganyika is a peaceful coun try it received its independence from england in 1961 without the loodshed that occurred in neigh boring kenya julius nyerere 43 a man loved and respected for his gentleness and strength by the 97 per cent of the voters who selected him to head their nation two years ago is the absolute leader of the one party state although the economy is based on agriculture only nine per cent of the land is cultivated poverty disease and ignorance is wide spread in this east african coun try making tanganyika one of the see africa page 5 arrangements by lehigh's two music professors will highlight tomorrow's concert by the university band and glee club at 8:15 in grace hall prof jonathan elkus will conduct the band in a transcription of emmanuel chabrier's satire on wagner's tristan and isolde an ar rangement by prof robert cutler of the welsh folk song cyri'r geifr will be featured in the glee club's repertoire the student conductors of both organizations will make their cam pus debuts joseph concilio 64 will lead the glee club in lizst's gaudeamus lgitur aud j lee jagers 64 will conduct the band in its performance of leroy anderson's popular sereaata the band will perform three marches during the evening march with trumpets a contemporary work by william bergesma new colonial a conventional march by r b hall and the hundred-year-old general lee's grand march by claudio s grafulla the glee club will open their part of the concert with the bach cantata 146 my spirit be joy ful they will feature two glees a compositional form from which glee clubs take its name bruce leinster 64 tenor will solo in has sorrow thy young days shaded an english folk song and robert crawford 67 will perform the solo in professor cutler's arrangement of cyri'r geifr the program is traditionally concluded with a united effort of i the two organizations the two groups will perform the testa ment of freedom by randall thompson because of the physi cal set-up of the concert the piece will be conducted by two conduc the last number on the pro gram will be a combined perform ance of the lehigh alma mater the parent's day concert origi nated eight years ago when a visitor to the first baud-glee club camp suggested that the concert performed at the camp be repeated face-lifting — cone are the old leaky faucets cracked walls and sharp shower floors from the bathrooms of taylor hall the university had the walls repainted and replastered in all of the bathrooms during the summer dr harvey a neville university president will confer 150 bachelo v's master's and doctor's degrees at founder's day ceremonies in packer memorial church sunday afternoon the ceremonies will begin at 2:30 p.m honorary degrees of doctor of science will be conferred on dr nelson j leonard professor of organic chemistry at the university of illinois and dr alfred s romer professor of zoology at harvard dr leonard a former rhodes scholar who received his bachelor's degree from lehigh in 1937 will deliver the commencement address prio :• to the ceremonies dr and mrs neville will give a luncheon in he asa packer room for recipients of honorary degrees members of the university board of trustees and invited guests founder's day
