increase the costs of operating the university we have given a great deal of consideration to this aspect and we've had committees on this which have spent years studying it we continue to look at it because there is some times the impression that the physical facilities — and possibly the faculty — are not used as effectireiy as they might be if we were in continuous operation on the trimester system which runs three terms a year with just about a month of vacation or the quarter system which is in vogue at perm state and certain other state institutions you cannot use your faculty — have them teach the year round there are other things they must do in order to keep up their professional knowledge and advancement in the field so you would have to convocation list completed canadian to speak the university library recently mailed its gift of 11 staff-written volumes for the shelves of the new presidential library in the white house ten of the books in the lehigh gift are the completed volumes of the series the british empire before the american revolution by dr lawrence h gipson professor emeritus of history the remaining book is sixty years of indian affairs by dr george d harmon head of the department of history before the volumes were forwarded to william v elder curator at the white house dr gipson above who won the 1962 pulitzer prise autographed the books faculty cancel classes so all can attend convo see martin page 4 geneva two years later he was an official delegate to the league of nations after being appointed parlia mentary assistant to the minister of labor in 1943 martin received his first cabinet position as secre tary of state in april of 1945 the folldwing year he became minister of national health and welfare when the first session of the c n general assembly was held in t-ondon and in new york in 1946 martin was a government delegate he held the same posi the faculty voted to dismiss classes scheduled for 9:10 10:10 and 11:10 on oct 25 with the understanding that time lost would be made up for the lectures scheduled at those hours eco 3 lect n scheduled for 9:10 has been rescheduled at 4:10 p.m oct 24 in drown hall 207 hist 11 scheduled for 12:10 will meet at 10 a.m friday on the upper floor of grace hall pro vision is being made so hist 11 students who have 1:10 classes will be able to get lunch before the class phy 3 lectures i and 11 have been rescheduled and will meet together at 4 : 10 oct 23 in packard auditorium there will be no blanket dis missal of classes at other hours on friday er saturday morning large freshmen lectures and fresh ittan and sophomore laboratories will meet as scheduled selective dismissal of other classes to permit attendance a the second and third convocation symposia may be allowed with mutual agreement of faculty and students hour quizzes will be avoided as much as possible on the two con vocation days gillespie band featured at hop paul martin canada's secretary of state for external affairs will be the closing speaker for lehigh's centennial convocation martin will speak at the honors program in grace hall on satur day evening oct 26 the program will be the concluding session of the three-day convocation announcement of the final pro gram was made today by monroe j rathbone president of the lehigh board of trustees who will preside at the session dr harvey a neville university pre sident will present the citation awards martin who was appointed secretary of state for external affairs this year has worked at various levels in the canadian government since 1935 when he was first elected to the house of commons the ottawa ont native was graduated in 1925 from st mi chael's college of the university of toronto he received law de grees from osgoode hall and har vard university and studied at trinity college cambridge uni versity prior to his election to parlia ment martin was senior partner in the law firm of martin laird gaston and cowan and had served for three years as lecturer in poli tical science at assumption col lege in 1936 martin was chosen chair man of the canadian delegation to the world youth conference in lehigh university brown three folksingers will provide entertainment sponsored by the gryphon society and the freshman class the dink hop is similar to other mixes held throughout the year for the frosh a total of 530 freshmen girls will be brought to the dance from beaver cedar crest centennary and douglass colleges and st luke's hospital school of nursing matt gillespie has played at several of the university's past functions including last year's dink hop more than 400 tickets at 3.00 apiece have been sold for the dink hop additional tickets v will be available at the door ghost car — no but this is one vehicle that's got a date with an accident radio controlled the all white car will be used for highway guard rail tests by fritz lab personnel
