the barber of seville gioacchino rossini's comic opera will be presented by the committee on performing arts at grace hall at 8:15 p.m monday the turnau opera players performance first in the committee's 1963-64 series will be sung in a new english language adaptation the 19th century rossini opera centers around the comic con fusion created by figaro as he plots the amorous pursuit of a beautiful lady the opera has been a favorite since its premiere performance in rome almost 150 years ago the play's new adaptation has been described as faithfully re producing the vigor of the italian libretto and suggesting the flavor of the original beaumarchi comedy dedicated to the presentation of quality professional opera in smaller american communities the opera players have been the subject of out standing reviews throughout the country the springfield sun springfield ohio said their singing was of exceptionally high calibre their acting was unbelievable and well timed with delightful comedy highpoints anyone layman or musi cian could understand and completely enjoy opera as presented by these extraordinary performers of their last appearance in lehigh valley a bethlehem globe-times reviewer wrote the turnau opera players staged a handsome pro duction with simple dramatic settings and beautiful costumes the entire performance was delightful and held the audience in light heart throughout the evening tickets for the opera are now on sale at the university cener the university's office of public information and huff's music store bethlehem 200 frosh await tickets for mixer 30 engineers taking special grad program a class of 30 engineers has been selected by the graduate school for inclusion lehigh's second an nual master's degree program the four-semester course of ad vanced study to be conducted at western electrics engineering re search center commenced sept 16 the students all recommend ed by western electric come from 12 states and hold degrees from 27 colleges and universities the graduates are guided by senior faculty members in practic ing engineering research and studying advanced theories the program consists of two seperate courses one in physics chemistry and engineering mater ials the other operations research the entire program is financed by western electric awarded to 24 demerits discipline report an estimated 200 freshmen stood sat and studied in front of dravo house wednesday afternoon waiting to buy tickets for the mixer with cedar crest college tomorrow night with the exception of a few at the end of the line those who patiently waited on the steps received tickets at the purchase price of 3 the line began to reach is greatest length shortly before 1 p.m and did not begin to move until after 4 p.m when the ticket sales began when the announcement was finally made that there were no longer any tickets available sounds of discontent were heard at the end of — — the line in keeping with the intentions of riving the new freshman class additional social functions through out this year the mixer will be the first of a series planned in previous years the number of these affairs has been limited by several factors among them the difficulty involved in keeping upperclassmen out of the dances the ancient custom of birddogging freshman dates has posed some degree of discouragement to the careless frosh admission to tomorrow eve ning's function at cedar crest will be by ticket only chp molecules to be studied a long-range research program concerning the fundamental chem istry of organophosphorus com pounds will be caried out at lehigh this year professor george r jenkins director of the institute of re search said the new project in volves a mechanistic study of how certain organophosphorus mole cules react with various species and the tpplication of such re actions to new and useful syntheses of acetylenes and phosphorus-con taining molecules these studies may result in a better understanding of the chem istry of organic reactions of phos phorus occurring in living systems four students were suspended and 20 others received a total of 49 demerits in disciplinary action taken in june july and august acording to the office of the dean of students in addition a freshan engineer was placed on disciplinary proba tion for one year as a condition of admission for violation of university reg ulations regarding possession and use of alcoholic beverages in the residence halls of the university a sophomore engineer received one demerit he received four additional de merits for the unauthorized re moval of chemicals from a uni versity laboratory and the use of these chemicals in the reduction of pennies for illegal purposes and use of these pennies in resi dence halls concessions machines for the accumulation of five de merits he was suspended from the university for one semester for departures from good order involving theft and forgery in the residence halls in the spring 63 semester a sophomore engineer was suspended indefinitely from the university on recommendation of the houseparty judiciary committee for gross disregard of spring 63 houseparty regulations a junior businessman was assessed four demerits also for socially offensive be havior reflecting discredit to fra ternity to houseparty as a social institution and to the univer sity he was formally reprimand ed by the dean of students for accumulation of five disciplinary demerits he was suspended from the university for the fall 63 use of any motor vehicle on uni versity property until feb 1 1964 a sophomore industrial en gineer was reprimanded and assessed two disciplinary de merits for participation in action leading to the firing of chemical mixture in the freshman quad rangle resulting in personal in jury to himself and presenting a potential hazard to at least one see discipline page 4 semester ap of jufne 7 1963 for im proper removal of cash and checks from another student's room an f'66 businessman was suspended indefinitely from the university for repeated violations of parking and traffic regulations three juniors — a chemical en gineer a mechanical engineer and an artsman — were warned and assessed one demerit each a senior businessman for dis regard of regulations governing lehigh students and motor vehi cles must continue under soph omore motor vehicle regulations until his cumulative average is raised and he has otherwise met requirements for a sophomore motor vehicle permit a senior metallurgist and junior businessman were repmimanded warned and assessed on demerit for an attempt in fall 62 semester to use for admission to a football game a university identification card which had previously been used to obtain a reserved seat ticket for action in disregard of social good order and spring 63 houseparty regulations a junior artsman a junior electrical en gineer and a civil engineer in the class of 63 were assessed one de merit each as of may 22 1963 for off campus action in disregard of sood order and tending to bring the good name of lehigh into disrepute two sophomore arts men were reprimanded and assessed one demerit each for repeated violations of park ing and traffic regulations after warning a senior arts man was assessed one demerit and denied anxious freshmen — waiting patiently freshmen
