research fellowship y the class of 1930 and its continua tion by succeeding freshman classes has enabled the chemistry depart ment to conduct an exhaustive re search on hydrates during the past four years the subject of hydrates though seemingly remote to the average person enters into every individ ual's daily life when jello is made at home it is made by a process of hydration the setting of cement and plaster of paris with the sub sequent swelling and expansion is hydration the cause of swelling is being carefully investigated at the present time ancients knew of this setting property of plaster of paris per sians placed criminals in hollow stone casings surrounded by wet plaster the plaster expanded and slowly crushed the lawbreaker to death housewives often have trouble with gels that refuse to gel inves tigations show that the presence of acids bases or salts effect the sol idifying properties of the gel when oranges have been added to a so lution organic acids are present and prevent setting in 1927 h c jones ch.e 27 freshman research fellow studied the volume changes of hydrates mr jones used gelatin which is similar in swelling properties to ce ment the following year r b k'burg ch.e 28 continued re search work on the hydration of gelatin and its relation to other properties it was during these in vestigations that the effect of acids bases and salts on gelatin was dis covered mr k'burg worked under the direction of prof h a neville and prof e r theis the results of this work were published in an article entitled a study of some properties of gela beck it is the best rec ommendation that a person has be sure to leave the record that you are making unspotted and un spoiled vision explained mr beck is a plan for wne's life and a quality that leaders must possess of seeing further ahead than the other fel low can the lack of purpose is at the present time killing the tomor row of many aspiring young men mr beck's parting pleas to the students was that they make an earnest effort to render a service to the need of mankind henline gives talk following the dinner that was served to 94 members of the insti tute in the main laboratory of the packard laboratory h h henline assistant secretary of the institute gave a short talk mr henline ex plained the organization 1 of the in stitute and gave a short history of the student branches of the main branches when the graduate and to offer the students some of the advantages that men of the indus try have through the medium of the student conventions president russ richards opened the convention with an address of welcome to the 162 members that were present at the morning ses sion of the convention president richards claimed that there are three qualities that characterize en records wanted alumni hear mcconn because france and italy have become exceedingly suspicious of each other at the londan confab the conference threatens to come to naught italy demands parity with france in the matter of ship ton nage — the french delegation wants to know the reason for the proposed equality and the italian delegation wants to know why italy should not be granted parity with her north ern neighbor * ♦ * italy of course does not need the same number of ships as does france with her scattered colonies but the italians balk at being con sidered an inferior or less impor tant nation than the french what a muddle ! ♦ ♦ * in the meantime england jap an and the united states are will ing to form a three power treaty should france and italy prove un willing to cease acting like two school boys a three power treaty would be almost as unsatisfactory as no treaty * ♦ ♦ naval rivalry between france and italy would only be cause for eng land japan and the united states to increase the size of their navies up to date the london conference has produced nothing more than front page filler for the newspapers * * * the discovery of the hitherto un known ninth planet of the solar system by the astronomers of the lowell observatory at flagstaff ariz marks one of the greatest events in the history of astronomy it is the third discovery of a ma jor planet in about 3,000 years the discovery was made possible through the calculations of the late percival lowell founder of the lo well observatory • the new planet lies beyond the orbit of neptune previously consid ered as being the frontier of our solar system the new planet is somewhat larger than the earth but its exact size has not yet been de termined it is about thirty times as far away from the sun as the earth is and it is invisible to the naked eye • ♦ » * the discovery of the new planet was made by a method similar to that which led to the discovery of neptune in 1846 before his death in 1916 percival lowell made mathe matical calculations on the pertur bations in the orbit of neptune which eventually led to the discov ery of the ninth member of the so lar system several days ago har vard astronomers have stated that there is a possibility that other plan ets may lie beyond that just found * * * the haitian commission after creating an agreement between the two factions on the island which has led to the re-establishment of rep resentative government pats itself on the back and retires from the land of turmoil and tropical heat the commission has done much to qualm the tempers of the oppos ing groups inhaiti but it has by no means bitten deep into the real problem — it has merely scratched the surface the insurgents in haiti were not only opposing the existing government because haitians did not have a representative govern ment they were also protesting against american occupation * * * according to the agreement reached eugene roy a haitian business man will take over the task of reforming the country's po litical situation but if the reform instituted by mr roy does not in clube a substantial reduction in the american occupational forces the name haiti will once more become a synonym for revolution the mc cormick commission of 1921 ac complished nothing the present commission has accomplished little more why could we not take our marines out of haiti and send them to chicago where they are more needed that would be an ideal so lution to both problems * * ♦ a sub-committee of the senate postoffice committee has recom mended that the department of justice prosecute those who have violated the law dealing with bar tering in offices in the report of the committee it is claimed that in most of the states under investigation a practice has grown up of the collec tion by republican leaders of a per centage of the salaries of federal job-holders to maintain the party machinery graft of this sort is an old fault of our government no one is sur prised at the report of the commis sion in fact were the problem not so serious it would be most amus ing when one realizes how long the evil has existed before the federal officials became aware of the fact with democracy the two great est crimes against the people are the keeping of one party in office too long and a surplus in the trea sury americans would do well to learn the fact and do something to remedy the situation pi delta epsilon requests that all men with service on publica tions hand an itemized record of their journalistic activities to carl o claus 31 delta upsilon house coach sheridan's charges who gained one title and 17 points to keep themselves in the running up until the closing bouts of the meet syracuse was second winning 14 points princeton third with a total of 13 points perm state and yale were deadlocked for fifth with 12 points each while columbia was next with 10 points to its credit pennsylvania failed to score a point harold phillips lehigh's 115 pounder repeated his brilliant work of last year and this time his ef forts were rewarded by a cham pionship crown in the preliminary he threw a tough opponent in big wood of yale and although unable to throw him won by a time advan tage of 7 minutes and 40 seconds the semi-final proved to be an easy one for the lehigh entry and he threw maise of perm in less than six minutes with a chancery and bar lock phillips scores win hertz of princeton stood between phillips and the title in the final bout and a close tussle resulted the princeton man was the favor ite however phillips started right to work after the starting bell and efnerged victorious with a time ad vantage of over four minutes to take lehigh's only title in the meet johnny engle added to lehigh's scoring by taking the runner-up po sition in the 125-pound class de feating cowell perm state entry with a large time advantage in the preliminary bout he entered the semi-finals against % peavy of syra cuse and again won by a decisive margin up against trousdaell of cornell in the finals he put up an other great bout similar to the one witnessed between the same two grapplers in bethlehem a short time ago but the experience of the cor nell man enabled him to gain a three-minute time advantage and annex the crown engle then met amster columbia in the second place bout and came through with another time advantage to secure runner-up honors shanker gets fall shanker wrestling in the 155 pound class gained a third place in the final standings he increased lehigh's total by scoring a fall over cleveland of yale in the prelimin ary bout the fall coming in the fi nal minutes of the alloted time the semi-final between the lehigh man and clark of columbia proved to be the closest bout of the meet the contestants were evenly matched and wrestled two extra periods the bout finally being awarded to clark by an 18 second advantage shank er met pratt of perm in the third place battle and this time reversed position winning with a 20 second time advantage eddie blackmar completes the list of lehigh grapplers who figured in the final standings blackmar drew wakeman who annexed the title for his preliminary bout aft er some spirited wrestling he lost on a time advantage but entered the third place bout where he met pearce of perm and won a close 30 second time advantage to add the final point to lehigh's total hutchins causes upset hutchins wrestling in the heavy weight class due to the forced with drawal of evers caused a sensa tion by throwing the perm entry a 247-pounder in 1 minute and 31 sec onds hutchins was unable to cope with rodin of yale in the semi-fi nals however and was defeated by a time advantage seal also did some pretty wrestl ing and reached the third place bouts he contributed a point to the leliigh cause by throwing thomp son of perm in short order hook er princeton entry was his oppon ent in the semi-finals and eliminat ed him from the finals by a small time professional program many bits of humor and legerdemain brandishing a deck of cards be tween the third and fourth acts of the program professor macdougall called forth an innocent victim who upon shuffling the cards in a high ly professional manner he calmly asked the gentleman to try again lo once more the seven of spades appeared to prove his point that the feat was not a matter of coin
