asserted claude bragdon ar chitect designer writer and lectur er to members of pi mv epsilon honorary mathematical fraternity wednesday evening in packard au ditorium old hindu and japan ese ornaments were all some form of mathematics continued mr bragdon many forms of nature are simple geometric problems flowers crabs and even man illus trate how mathematics may be ap plied to nature mr bradgon was introduced by harry f singer 30 assistant di rector of pi mv epsilon mr brag don is a modern pioneer in the ap plication of mathematics to artistic design he has used his new-found method of artistic design in several buildings in and around new york city and has written several books and articles on artistic and architec tural subjects mathematics is the absolute fundamental thing of the universe it is the thread from which the whole universe is hung explained mr bragdon my new develop ment of mathematics used first in the new york central railroad sta tion at rochester n v is merely the jazzing up of old architectural ideas in older forms of architecture forms were made according to the necessities of the structure and or naments were due to the psycholo gy of people of a particular period roman and grecian ornaments were in the forms of flowers and plants of that time at present none of these old styles is used archi tectural ornamentations are con stantly changing but mathematics of some sort are found in them all mr bragdon derives his ideas from two sources the first source in a fourth dimensional projection of a cube he illustrated this pro jection with drawings on the black board the other source is a magic square a magic square is a group of successive numbers when added horizontally vertically or diagon ally will all be equal to the same number by starting at one number and continuing in succession to all the other numbers a unique design is obtained mathematical designs are being used in numerous forms of decor ations many interesting and novel lighting effects may be obtained by using them in lanterns many de signs are used to point out expres sion in the same way that music does mr bragdon illustrated ex pression with several different de signs he claimed that with his new form of mathematical methods of design it is no longer necessary to symbolize industry by a lady with a sheaf of wheat surrounded by cogwheels but by using a mathe matical design the book list of the university li brary increased last month by the addition of 147 volumes some of the important works on philosophy received are as follows quest for certainty by dewey transitional eeras in thought ' by rrmstrong mental efficiency by bennett and enrique's histor ic development of logic more volumes concerning sociol igy are now on the list among them are how to experiment in education by mccall how to find the right vocation by kit son and dice's new levels in the stock market the analysis of drugs and chemicals by evers applied geophysics in bradley stoughton g e doan allison butts w e har vey and e s greiner indifference of citizens and antag onism of members of the state leg islature were given as the two great est obstacles to judiciary reforms in pennsylvania by robert a stotz judge of the northampton county court in a lecture last evening on the part played by the judges in the administration of justice the lecture which was sponsored by the pre-legal society was held in the packard laboratory the antagonism of the state leg islature to the judiciary has led the law makers to deprive the judiciary of much of its necessary power judge stotz asserted during a re cent session of the state legislature at harrisburg the judge declared a bill to allow the judges instead of the contending attorneys to ques tion prospective jurors was defeat ed through the activities of the law yers serving as members of the legislature the indifference of citi zens to this state of affairs makes reform almost impossible though court trials held before a jury have become a game with the judge acting as a referee or um pire the judge has moments when his responsibility is very great the speaker disclosed the judge must be very careful not to make any mistake which would lead to an ap peal to a higher court special care must be exercised by the judge in charging the jury judge stotz explained in speaking of his own experience as a judge the lecturer mentioned the case of a negro who was charged with murder as one of the cases which caused him to sweat blood the negro pleaded guilty after hearing the district attorney present the case of the state against him this threw all the responsi bility into his hands the judge add ed after deciding that the prison er was guilty of first degree murder he sentenced him to life imprison ment as he did not feel justified in taking the life of an ignorant man the duties of the judge in differ ent types of cases were explained briefly by the speaker who clari fied any doubtful points which the audience may have had in the open forum following the meeting barker attends meet organized work for boys was the subject of an address given by prof theodore m newcomb of the psychology department to the bethlehem rotary club wednesday afternoon at the hotel bethlehem dr newcomb was introduced be fore the society by dean c m mc conn as an authority on juvenile work some day perhaps we will have an organization in this city con ceived for the purpose of caring for delinquent boys and for promoting their interest in work but not con fining it to any one standard or viewpoint said dr newcomb in part the professor said that organ ized work for boys could not be ac complished properly until juvenile delinquency has been corrected the reasons he said for delin quent behavior are in main two 1 poor heredity and in particul ar low intelligence and 2 unfor tunate environment dr newcomb stated that it should henceforth be the duty of the rotarians to assist and promote work in bethlehem as a preventa tive of future juvenile delinquency and as a means of bettering the community in general creedy speaks to club tonight 8 p in lecture illustrated by george a was introduced by harry f singer 30 assistant di rector of pi mv epsilon mr brag don is a modern pioneer in the ap plication of mathematics to artistic design he has used his new-found method of artistic design in several buildings in and around new york city and has written several books and articles on artistic and architec tural subjects mathematics is the absolute fundamental thing of the universe it is the thread from which the whole universe is hung explained mr bragdon my new develop ment of mathematics used first in the new york central railroad sta tion at rochester n v is merely the jazzing up of old architectural ideas in older forms of architecture forms were made according to the necessities of the structure and or naments were due to the psycholo gy of people of a particular period roman and grecian ornaments were in the forms of flowers and plants of that time at present none of these old styles is used archi tectural ornamentations are con stantly changing but mathematics of some sort are found in them all mr bragdon derives his ideas from two sources the first source in a fourth dimensional projection of a cube he illustrated this pro jection with drawings on the black board the other source is a magic square a magic square is a group of successive numbers when added horizontally vertically or diagon ally will all be equal to the same number by starting at one number and continuing in succession to all the other numbers a unique design is obtained mathematical designs are being used in numerous forms of decor ations many interesting and novel lighting effects may be obtained by using them in lanterns many de signs are used to point out expres sion in the same way that music does mr bragdon illustrated ex pression with several different de signs he claimed that with his new form of mathematical methods of design it is no longer necessary to symbolize industry by a lady with a sheaf of wheat surrounded by cogwheels but by using a mathe matical design the book list of the university li brary increased last month by the addition of 147 volumes some of the important works on philosophy received are as follows quest for certainty by dewey transitional eeras in thought ' by rrmstrong mental efficiency by bennett and enrique's histor ic development of logic more volumes concerning sociol igy are now on the list among them are how to experiment in education by mccall how to find the right vocation by kit son and dice's new levels in the stock market the analysis of drugs and chemicals by evers applied geophysics in bradley stoughton g e doan allison butts w e har vey and e s greiner indifference of citizens and antag onism of members of the state leg islature were given as the two great est obstacles to judiciary reforms in pennsylvania by robert a stotz judge of the northampton county court in a lecture last evening on the part played by the judges in the administration of justice the lecture which was sponsored by the pre-legal society was held in the packard laboratory the antagonism of the state leg islature to the judiciary has led the law makers to deprive the judiciary of much of its necessary power judge stotz asserted during a re cent session of the state legislature at harrisburg the judge declared a bill to allow the judges instead of the contending attorneys to ques tion prospective jurors was defeat ed through the activities of the law yers serving as members of the legislature the indifference of citi zens to this state of affairs makes reform almost impossible though court trials held before a jury have become a game with the judge acting as a referee or um pire the judge has moments when his responsibility is very great the speaker disclosed the judge must be very careful not to make any mistake which would lead to an ap peal to a higher court special care must be exercised by the judge in charging the jury judge stotz explained in speaking of his own experience as a judge the lecturer mentioned the case of a negro who was charged with murder as one of the cases which caused him to sweat blood the negro pleaded guilty after hearing the district attorney present the case of the state against him this threw all the responsi bility into his hands the judge add ed after deciding that the prison er was guilty of first degree murder he sentenced him to life imprison ment as he did not feel justified in taking the life of an ignorant man the duties of the judge in differ ent types of cases were explained briefly by the speaker who clari fied any doubtful points which the audience may have had in the open forum following the meeting barker attends meet organized work for boys was the subject of an address given by prof theodore m newcomb of the psychology department to the bethlehem rotary club wednesday afternoon at the hotel bethlehem dr newcomb was introduced be fore the society by dean c m mc conn as an authority on juvenile work some day perhaps we will have an organization in this city con ceived for the purpose of caring for delinquent boys and for promoting their interest in work but not con fining it to any one standard or viewpoint said dr newcomb in part the professor said that organ ized work for boys could not be ac complished properly until juvenile delinquency has been corrected the reasons he said for delin quent behavior are in main two 1 poor heredity and in particul ar low intelligence and 2 unfor tunate environment dr newcomb stated that it should henceforth be the duty of the rotarians to assist and promote work in bethlehem as a preventa tive of future juvenile delinquency and as a means of bettering the community in general creedy speaks to club tonight 8 p in lecture illustrated by george a
