when scientists estimate the moon will always stay over one spot on the earth and the day will have been lengthened to 47 of our present days professor reynolds took his au dience on a trip to the magaine machine design pro fessor ault says quality of hard nerr admits of no inclusive defini tion some conceive it to be the re sistance to wear or scratching with some hard tool some view it as the resistance to penetration and oth ers as the resistance to crushing the definition most generally ac cepted by engineers is hardness is the property of resisting the lo cal displacements of portions of its substance by contact with another body numerous scientific methods are in daily use for the hardness test ing of materials and professor ault shows the importance of designers knowing the characteristics of the best known testing machines when making specifications a great num ber of outstanding testing machines have been studied by professor ault and in his article he points out the characteristics of each one the knowledge of the degree of hardness is useful in determining and checking the composition pro perties and utility of a material professor ault declared he also gives a interviewed seniors in re gards to positions the positions they offered were in the testing de partments of the power companies sented saturday hansel and gretel will be pre subscription book clubs were denounced by librarian howard s leach as merely an advertising scheme to sell the books to the pub lic in a recent interview with a brown and white reporter the idea of six judges selecting the proper book every month for 300,000 people is ridiculous con tinued mr leach if a person de siring to become well-read has only the amount necessary to subscribe to the books of themonths clubs he would do much better by selecting his books elsewhere bewailing the fact that the mod ern college man does not spend much time in reading the librarian continued if he would only browse around in the library he would no doubt find many books that would interest him the advertisement about read ing 15 minutes a day may evoke much amusement but it carrier enough truth to have a great deal behind it added mr leach it is not necessary to have a three hour stretch to spend in reading the boring half hour before dinner is an excellent time to use and the ma terial read will often provide many interesting topics of discussion for the dinner table at no time were there more worth-while periodicals than at present every man should claude bragdon new york ar chitect and designer of stage set tings will lecture on art and mathematics in the packard lab oratory at 8 o'clock wednesday evening march 12 the lecture will be open to the public and is spon sored by pi mv epsilon honorary mathematical fraternity illustrated slides will accompany the lecture and some especially artistic designs will be shown mr bragdon is a pioneer in the application of mathematics to ar tistic design he had used mathe matical methods in designing dec orations for the nek york central railroad station in rochester n.y and the chamber of commerce building also in rochester mr bragdon has fashioned the stage settings for all of walter hamp ton's productions and designed the stage effects for the new york philharmonic orchestra's concerts in the brooklyn academy of music he is the author of numerous books and essays on artistic and architec tural subjects very little technical knowledge will be necessary to follow the lec ture it is said for although mr bragdon will tell how he uses such mathematical subjects as magic squares four dimensional geometry and higher plane curves he will ex plain briefly some of the mathe matical processes he uses subscribe to one good weekly and read it thoroughly and regularly instead of reading several half heartedly contemporary literature is in a marked depression and there are only a few great writers at the pres ent time said mr leach among these i would include robert frost stephen vincent benet eugene o'neil john drinkwater and george bernard shaw many of the older writers such as dickinson scott and shakes peare have been spoiled for the modern generation because their works have been forced on the stu dents in the secondary schools they would be appreciated much more if volumes of their writings were included in home libraries where students could make their acquaintance gradually the inquiring mind is of utmost value to a man mr leach assert ed and it will lead him to many valuable books and papers that he never knew existed mr leach believes that every col lege man should start early in build ing up his own collection of books paying particular attention to the subjects in which he is especially interested by the time he has grad uated he will have his own per sonal library which will give him much satisfaction the 30,000 or more people who gathered in union square new york on thursday some to take part in the communistic demonstra tions others merely to satisfy their curiosity witnessed something more than the soap-box oratory they had expected police on foot and horse turned the crowd into a milling mob within the space of a few minutes those who looked like commun ists were clubbed and kicked by police and plain-clothes men five communists who attempted to pre sent a petition for a parade to may or walker at city hall and who attempted to incite their followers to parade without a permit were ar rested and thrown into jail communism has no place in prog ressive america its citizens claim the people as a whole are opposed to communism and are entirely out of sympathy with its followers but we cannot make good citizens out of communists by meeting their arguments with night-sticks and by throwing them into jail wrong though they may have been in at tempting to march without permis sion the press and the people of this country must realize that they have the right of free speech de liberate attempts on the part of the press to pervert public opinion con cerning these communists iftsults the intergrity of our newspapers just as uncalled for pugnacity on the part of the police stamps our law enforcement methods as brutal and ♦ * * the nation has lost one of its most useful citizens in the death of william howard taft a man whose entire life has been devoted to use ful public service and the only man in the history of america to have filled both the offices of pres ident and chief justice of the unit ed states mr taft served his country as judge solicitor general governor general of the philippines secre tary of war president of the united states and lastly chief jus tice of the united states in pub lic life mr taft's services were marked with patriotism fairness and a sincere devotion that earned for him the respect and admiration of all men in private life he won the respect and affection of all with whom he came into contact by his kindness and sympathy mr taft was a champion of peace who never wavered in his views ev en in the face of great opposition and yet in time of war he put forth his greatest energy that his nation might be victorious william how ard taft was a great american the anthracite coal producers are very much aroused because russian hard coal is being imported into new england where it is undersell ing pennsylvania anthracite — a grossly unfair situation they claim the russian coal comes from the donetz basin of southern russia it is taken to the sea of azof by rail from there through the black sea the sea of marmora the dar danelles and into the mediterran ean through the straits of gibral tar and across the atlantic ocean to the new england ports where it is sold for 10 a ion in wash ington congressman brumm has made an appeal for assistance to the anthracite coal industry it is difficult to understand why the pennsylvania producers consid er the situation grossly unfair there is nothing unfair in an open competition for a market we sem tractors to russia why canntit rus sia sell coal to us and perhaps congressman brumm does not re alize that it would be unfair to make the people of new england buy pennsylvania coal at a price higher than the soviet coal is now offered by placing a duty on im ported anthracite a representative of the pennsyl vania companies has denounced the coal consumers of new england as being unpatriotic he should learn that economics is not a patriotic science ♦ * ♦ what will undoubtedly prove a great aid to the medical profession is a midget camera recently demon strated before the new york acad emy of medicine by dr maurice berck and dr paul aschner of mt sinai hospital new york the camera may be swallowed and will be used to take pictures of the in terior of the stomach it is a little more than a quarter of an inch in diameter and about half an inch long two of these cameras are swal lowed at a time they are mounted end to end on a rubber tube and a small electric light is placed be tween them the cameras are con trolled by wires running down the length of the rubber tube the small electric light gives 12,000 candle power and its flash lasts lesstthan a hundredth of a second pin holes are used on the camera in place of lenses eight separate views of the stomach are taken instantaneously by each of the two cameras the films used hard tool some view it as the resistance to penetration and oth ers as the resistance to crushing the definition most generally ac cepted by engineers is hardness is the property of resisting the lo cal displacements of portions of its substance by contact with another body numerous scientific methods are in daily use for the hardness test ing of materials and professor ault shows the importance of designers knowing the characteristics of the best known testing machines when making specifications a great num ber of outstanding testing machines have been studied by professor ault and in his article he points out the characteristics of each one the knowledge of the degree of hardness is useful in determining and checking the composition pro perties and utility of a material professor ault interviewed seniors in re gards to positions the positions they offered were in the testing de partments of the power companies sented saturday hansel and gretel will be pre subscription book clubs were denounced by librarian howard s leach as merely an advertising scheme to sell the books to the pub lic in a recent interview with a brown and white reporter the idea of six judges selecting the proper book every month for 300,000 people is ridiculous con tinued mr leach if a person de siring to become well-read has only the amount necessary to subscribe to the books of themonths clubs he would do much better by selecting his books elsewhere bewailing the fact that the mod ern college man does not spend much time in reading the librarian continued if he would only browse around in the library he would no doubt find many books that would interest him the advertisement about read ing 15 minutes a day may evoke much amusement but it carrier enough truth to have a great deal behind it added mr leach it is not necessary to have a three hour stretch to spend in reading the boring half hour before dinner is an excellent time to use and the ma terial read will often provide many interesting topics of discussion for the dinner table at no time were there more worth-while periodicals than at present every man should claude bragdon new york ar chitect and designer of stage set tings will lecture on art and mathematics in the packard lab oratory at 8 o'clock wednesday evening march 12 the lecture will be open to the public and is spon sored by pi mv epsilon honorary mathematical fraternity illustrated slides will accompany the lecture and some especially artistic designs will be shown mr bragdon is a pioneer in the application of mathematics to ar tistic design he had used mathe matical methods in designing dec orations for the nek york central railroad station in rochester n.y and the chamber of commerce building also in rochester mr bragdon has fashioned the stage settings for all of walter hamp ton's productions and designed the stage effects for the new york philharmonic orchestra's concerts in the brooklyn academy of music he is the author of numerous books and essays on artistic and architec tural subjects very little technical knowledge will be necessary to follow the lec ture it is said for although mr bragdon will tell how he uses such mathematical subjects as magic squares four dimensional geometry and higher plane curves he will ex plain briefly some of the mathe matical processes he uses subscribe to one good weekly and read it thoroughly and regularly instead of reading several half heartedly contemporary literature is in a marked depression and there are only a few great writers at the pres ent time said mr leach among these i would include robert frost stephen vincent benet eugene o'neil john drinkwater and george bernard shaw many of the older writers such as dickinson scott and shakes peare have been spoiled for the modern generation because their works have been forced on the stu dents in the secondary schools they would be appreciated much more if volumes of their writings were included in home libraries where students could make their acquaintance gradually the inquiring mind is of utmost value to a man mr leach assert ed and it will lead him to many valuable books and papers that he never knew existed mr leach believes that every col lege man should start early in build ing up his own collection of books paying particular attention to the subjects in which he is especially interested by the time he has grad uated he will have his own per sonal library which will give him much satisfaction the 30,000 or more people who gathered in union square new york on thursday some to take part in the communistic demonstra tions others merely to satisfy their curiosity witnessed something more than the soap-box oratory they had expected police on foot and horse turned the crowd into a milling mob within the space of a few minutes those who looked like commun ists were clubbed and kicked by police and plain-clothes men five communists who attempted to pre sent a petition for a parade to may or walker at city hall and who attempted to incite their followers to parade without a permit were ar rested and thrown into jail communism has no place in prog ressive america its citizens claim the people as a whole are opposed to communism and are entirely out of sympathy with its followers but we cannot make good citizens out of communists by meeting their arguments with night-sticks and by throwing them into jail wrong though they may have been in at tempting to march without permis sion the press and the people of this country must realize that they have the right of free speech de liberate attempts on the part of the press to pervert public opinion con cerning these communists iftsults the intergrity of our newspapers just as uncalled for pugnacity on the part of the police governor general of the philippines secre tary of war president of the united states and lastly chief jus tice of the united states in pub lic life mr taft's services were marked with patriotism pennsylvania anthracite — a grossly unfair situation they claim the russian coal comes from the donetz basin of southern russia it is taken to the sea of azof by rail from there through the black sea the sea of marmora the dar danelles and into the mediterran ean through the straits of gibral tar and across the atlantic ocean to the new england ports where it is sold for 10 a ion in wash ington congressman brumm has made an appeal for assistance to the anthracite coal industry it is difficult to understand why the pennsylvania producers consid er the situation grossly unfair there is nothing unfair in an open competition for a market we sem tractors to russia why canntit rus sia sell coal to us and perhaps congressman brumm does not re alize that it would be unfair to make the people of new england buy pennsylvania coal at a price higher than the soviet coal is now offered by placing a duty on im ported anthracite a representative of the pennsyl vania companies has denounced the coal consumers of new england as being unpatriotic he should learn that economics is not a patriotic science ♦ * ♦ what will undoubtedly prove a great aid to the medical profession is a midget camera
