faculty were present and after the address dr percy hughes led the discus sion on the question of an adoption of fixed policies in grading at le high and all other pennsylvania un iversities dr weida like soldiers crossing no man's land the men approached the power house they were sweating by this time the temperature had risen to 87 degrees but the cellar of the wilbur labor atory was in sight unwilling to make their presence known to the men in the power house and not wishing to give up the tour they went back to their starting point and proceeded in the direction of packard laboratory so far they had nothing but bumps a few slight burns and dirt to show for their pains an empty whiskey bottle had been left for others to find at a future date where they had found it now a branching tunnel beckoned them onward onward and upward they went a rickety old ladder at the end was their means of access to packer chapel like characters from a gothic novel they slipped under the cellar campus there are no ghostly inhabitants no ghastly remains and no buried treasure nothing but pipes escaping steam dirt water and occasionally a glim mering electric light this is the story of two reporters who recent ly made a short tour of the tun armed with flashlights a thermo meter note book and pencil the reporters began their journey at christmas-saucon hall stooped like coal miners they started away it was but a moment until they reached the long tunnel which with numerous turns extends from the power house to packard labor atory with the intention of making a complete tour of the tunnels the men started toward the power house an occasional electric light served as a beckoning hand as hunched and cauitously they made their way forward water seeped through their shoes jutting pipes and brackets made nasty marks on heads and ribs but the men kept on wrig carleton schwab wagner 15 nephew of charles m schwab who is a member of the board of trus tees of lehigh university and pending i must get those giving the next program arranged in the studio you can't stop a program long enough to do all that we don't there are two broad casting rooms while i am prepar ing for the next program clarence dreisbach the studio manager is announcing the program being broadcast from the other room how many programs do you an nounce each evening generally mr driesbach and i alternate at the mike in half hour periods wcba is on the air every monday wednesday friday and sunday evenings so we get three nights a week off your life must be rather easy after all it would be if i didn't go to lehigh i ajn a junior now and have considerable studying to do when did you get this job continued on page four in the fall of 1928 i came to this station on a visit i am an amateur wireless operator and am also in terested in radio there was a posi tion as announcer open so i ap plied for and received it while the various world powers are haggling arguing fighting and scrapping at the londan conference in a noble if somewhat too ambi tious fourth or fifth attempt to make future wars absolutely impos sible it is to be noted that the na tional income is still being expend ed in the interests of the war god mars and to the joy of those who use his playthings all this dicker ing and quarreling as to whether or not the pnmary nations shall have only 15 capital ships or 18 capital ships or 25 capital ships is pure peace publicity and bunk each nation has entered the lon don conference not because it wants to but because the people of that nation wish that everything possible shall be done in the interests of world-peace the same pages of our daily newspapers which announce in glaring headlines that some agreement is about to be reached at london also disclose that a division of the united states fleet will car ry on quite extensive maneuvers in the atlantic and the caribbean the same page also announces that the navy department has obtained an appropriation of 25,000 to conduct tests in an endeavor to produce air ships that will equal the 220 mile planes now possessed by britain what does all this peace business mean what are all these pacts and agreements for evidently the world wants and talks about peace but is not ready for it no doubt if it can be obtained cheaply and with no loss of prestige by a nation it is certainly desired why should we think peace in london and play at war in the caribbean * * * reports from the vatican city tell of pope pius's letter to cardin al bosillic pompilj in which he de plores the neglect of the nations of the world to interfere in the sov iets persecution of christians in russia what the pope really means is that he denounces the persecu tion of the church and the antag onism shown by the soviets against priests nuns and other representa tives of the church the pope also denounces the soviet government for its atheistic front it is to be realized that the sov iets are only attempting to put into practice those ideas which they be lieve will lead toward pure marxian socialism in russia such a policy tails for a very strong government and a government that holds_abso lute and undisputed power there is no place in russia for a strong church as well as a strong central government the church must be driven out in order that the social istic doctrine will survive the church in russia remains as a vis tage of past power it once gov erned the lives and destinies of the russian people that is why the sov iet government is determined to de prive it of its power the soviet government is not anti christian or atheistic — it is merely socialistic to the core ♦ » * education experts at teachers college columbia university an nounced that they were opposed to official recognition of the star spangled banner as a national an them in its place they urged the use of america the beautiful written by catherine lee bates they are opposed to the martial flavor of the star spangled ban ner the idea presented by the columbia college professors is not made without considerable thought they are thinking in terms of world-peace they realize that it will be impossible to have a peace loving america which stands upon its feet and sings of bombs burst ing in air and other passages that relate'primarily to war if this idea of world-peace is to be put across we must think peace act peace believe in peace and even sing of peace the star spangled banner is purely a war-time an them if refusal to recognize it as the national anthem would be a step toward world peace then no mat ter what our personal feeling for the old song may be we must say that its abolition is much to be pre ferred * * * science once more triumphs by use of a new and highly sensitive method of analysis two professors at alabama polytechnic institute have discovered the presence of ele ment number 87 the element was discovered by use of the new mag neto-optic method of analysis that the two alabama professors have developed nothing of the charac teristics of this new element are known the method of analysis merely denotes its presence it would be impossible to pre dict what might develop from a knowledge of this new element man is continually searching for new facts and new things every thing that man has been able to de vise or handle has found a use in his life perhaps no new and startling scientific development will come out of this discovery in the very near future but we may be assured that no stone will be left unturned until the wheels of industry move just a little faster because of the knowl edge that has been newly acquired this is station wcba the queen city station allentown pa charles a milson 13 announcing we felt that our listeners are all interested in the man at the students of lehigh university mr milson will you tell your listeners about some of your excit ing times as a radio announcer here in wcba which is a very small station we have very little excitement i have found radio an nouncing a very monotonous job in fact if one were not kept so busy he would become lonesome up here what do you do that keeps you so busy before a program opens i must get the open dishes burning fats candles oil and gas lamps the next greatest step came in 1881 when sir humphrey davy in vented the carbon arc lamp slides were then shown of the evolution of the incandescent in methods of marking and in resultant grades at lehigh and at other institutions in the united states according to dr frank m weida assistant profes sor of mathematics in his address to the faculty educational club yesterday afternoon in packard lab oratory presenting data to verify his statements dr weida pointed out the discrepancies and showed a marked lack of conformity among departments and among universi ties sixty-two members of the faculty were present and after the address dr percy hughes led the discus sion on the question of an adoption of fixed policies in grading at le high and all other pennsylvania un iversities dr weida will leave lehigh at the close of the current semester to become associate professor of mathematics at george washing ton university in washington d.c his years ago the number of cases treated in the dispensary during the month of january showed a decided de crease over those of the preceding month although colds are less preval ent in january the drop cellar of the wilbur labor atory was in sight unwilling to make their presence known to the men in the power house and not wishing to give up the tour they went back to their starting point and proceeded in the direction of packard laboratory so far they had nothing but bumps a few slight burns and dirt to show for their pains an empty whiskey bottle had been left for others to find at a future date where they had found it now a branching tunnel beckoned them onward onward and upward they went a rickety old ladder at the end was their means of access to packer chapel like characters are run from building to building on the lehigh campus there are no ghostly inhabitants no ghastly remains and no buried treasure nothing but pipes escaping steam dirt water and occasionally a glim mering electric light this is the story of two reporters who recent ly made a short tour of the tun armed with flashlights a thermo meter note book and pencil the reporters began their journey at christmas-saucon hall stooped like coal miners they started away it was but a moment until they reached the long tunnel which with numerous turns extends from the power house to packard labor atory with the intention of making a complete tour of the tunnels the men started toward the power house an occasional electric light served as a beckoning hand as hunched and cauitously they made their way forward water seeped through their shoes jutting pipes and brackets made nasty marks on heads and ribs but the men kept on wrig carleton schwab wagner 15 nephew of charles m schwab who is a member of ursinus col lege on the kellogg peace pact is pending i must get those giving the next program arranged in the studio you can't stop a program long enough to do all that we don't there are two broad casting rooms while i am prepar ing for the next program clarence dreisbach the studio manager is announcing the program being broadcast from the other room how many programs do you an nounce each evening generally mr driesbach and i alternate at the mike in half hour periods wcba is on the air every monday wednesday friday and sunday evenings so we get three nights a week off your life must be rather easy after all it would be if i didn't go to lehigh i ajn a junior now and have considerable studying to do when did you get this job continued on page four in the fall of 1928 i came to this station on a visit i am an amateur wireless operator and am also in terested in radio there was a posi tion as announcer open so i ap plied for and received it while the various world powers are haggling arguing fighting and scrapping at the londan conference in a noble if somewhat too ambi tious fourth or fifth attempt to make future wars absolutely impos sible it is to be noted that the na tional income is still being expend ed in the interests of the war god mars and to the joy of those who use his playthings all this dicker ing and quarreling as to whether or not the pnmary nations shall have only 15 capital ships or 18 capital ships or 25 capital ships is pure peace publicity and bunk each nation has entered the lon don conference not because it wants to but because the people of that nation wish that everything possible shall be done in the interests of world-peace the same pages of our daily newspapers which announce in glaring headlines that some agreement is about to be reached at london also disclose that a division of the united states fleet will car ry on quite extensive maneuvers in the atlantic and the caribbean the same page also announces that the navy department has obtained an appropriation of 25,000 to conduct tests in an endeavor to produce air ships that will equal the 220 mile planes now possessed by britain what does all this peace business mean what are all these pacts and agreements for evidently the world wants and talks about peace but is not ready for it no doubt if it can be obtained cheaply and with no loss of prestige by a nation it is certainly desired why should we think peace in london and play at war in the caribbean * * * reports from the vatican city tell of pope pius's letter to cardin al bosillic pompilj in which he de plores the neglect of the nations of the world to interfere in the sov iets persecution of christians in russia what the pope really means is that he denounces the persecu tion of the church and the antag onism shown by the soviets against priests nuns and other representa tives of the church the pope also denounces the soviet government for its atheistic front it is to be realized that the sov iets are only attempting to put into practice those ideas which they be lieve will lead toward pure marxian socialism in russia such a policy tails for a very strong government and a government that holds_abso lute and undisputed power there is no place in russia for a strong church as well as a strong central government the church must be driven out in order that the social istic doctrine will survive the church in russia remains as a vis tage of past power it once gov erned the lives and destinies of the russian people that is why the sov iet government is determined to de prive it of its power the soviet government is not anti christian or atheistic — it is merely socialistic to the core ♦ » * education experts at teachers college columbia university an nounced that they were opposed to official recognition of the star spangled banner as a national an them in its place they urged the use of america the beautiful written by catherine lee bates they are opposed to the martial flavor of the star spangled ban ner the idea presented by the columbia college professors is not made without considerable thought they are thinking in terms of world-peace they realize that it will be impossible to have a peace loving america which stands upon its feet and sings of bombs burst ing in air and other passages that relate'primarily to war if this idea of world-peace is to be put across we must think peace act peace believe in peace and even sing of peace the star spangled banner is purely a war-time an them if refusal to recognize it as the national anthem would be a step toward world peace then no mat ter what our personal feeling for the old song may be we must say that its abolition is much to be pre ferred * * * science once more triumphs by use of a new and highly sensitive method of analysis two professors at alabama polytechnic institute have discovered the presence of ele ment number 87 the element was discovered by use of the new mag neto-optic method of analysis that the two alabama professors have developed nothing of the charac teristics of this new element are known the method of analysis merely denotes its presence it would be impossible to pre dict what might develop from a knowledge of this new element man is continually searching for new facts and new things every thing that man has been able to de vise or handle has found a use in his life perhaps no new and startling scientific development will come out of this discovery in the very near future but we may be assured that no stone will be left unturned until the wheels of industry move just a little faster because of the knowl edge that has been newly acquired this is station wcba the queen city station allentown pa charles a milson 13 announcing we felt that our listeners are
