lehigh represented at report of the 21st national inter fraternity council convention by harry ruggles lehigh delegate voting of a gift to austy tate foot ball coach for his service to the university welcoming of the theta kappa phi fraternity to the coun cil and arranging of a fraternity basketball schedule constituted the business transacted at the inter fraternity council meeting monday evening sixty institutions of higher learn ing were represented at the 21st national inter-fraternity council at the hotel pennsylvania new york city last friday and saturday sec retary of the interior wilbur in his address to the convention stated that the colleges of today will ulti mately cease giving four year courses because the allotted time is insufficient for the student who spe cializes in certain fields of language literature or science and is more than enough for the individual seek ing only a general education two year and six year curricula will sup plant the present four year ones hell week abolished cooperative buying of fuel and provisions the abolishment of hell week and a card filing system for freshman dates during rushing sea son comprised the bulk of the dis cussion at the convention copera tive buying has been successfully instituted among the fraternities at oregon state university six frater nities have abolished hell week the purpose of this annual meet ing of interfraternity councils is to bring about an exchange of ideas and developments that have arisen in the different sections of the na tion woman's club hears mcconn dr john h randall jr profes sor of philosophy at columbia uni versity will lecture on the diffi culties that face present day natur alism at 7:30 p m friday dec 6 in room 466 packard laboratory under the auspices of the robert w blake society dr randall is prominent among the younger men in this field of stu dy and has an extended and rapidly growing reputation of being a pow erful witty and stimulating lectur er the topic which dr randall has selected is open and his ap proach will be rational and scienti fic by naturalism philosophers mean an attempt to explain the uni verse through the principle of nat ural science it involves a rather ra tional account of the universe and compels its students to assume a somewhat supernatural aspect besides being a lecturer of wide recognition dr randall is the au thor of several notable books in cluding the making of the mod ern mind and our changing civ ilization he is also interested and an active worker in the question of world unity at 6 o'clock dr randall will meet the blake society at supper in the university dining hall rob ert heckert 24 who was instru mental in establishing the blake society vvill speak on its history and purposes the development of a newspaper from the signs of primitive man to the present day news service was the substance of an illustrated lec ture by henry edward warner of the baltimore sun-papers last eve ning in the packard auditorium about 200 persons heard this ex planation on the making of a newspaper mr warner opened with man's first attempts to communicate with others and then described the de velopment of the printed word he also explained the actual process of making a newspaper we are indebted to many men for our newspaper of today he said and especially to johannes guttenburg who stumbled over a cider press and thereby accidentally discovered the principal of the type press slides illustrate talk mr warner who is a veteran newspaperman and a noted radio educational speaker under the title of uncle ed illustrated his re sume of journalism progress by slides of the interior of a modern press office he showed pictures of the operations from the first step in obtaining the paper rolls to the finished product costing the com pany about 14 cents and selling for the extremely low price of two cents mr warner also had on ex hibition cuts and protographic cuts which he described at length he is most interested in collegiate journalism and following his lecture he visited the rooms of the brown and white the brown and white is a splendid newspaper he remarked i am very much interested in col lege and school newspaper work and always applaud violently when a student staff gets away from mag azine and compromise makeup and follows the lines of practical daily journalism mr warner is well known as an author on news subjects and also poetry mcconn spurns idea that men are equal a collision between the motor cycle on which he was riding and a heavy sedan driven by erwin underwood 31 leonard hall at seneca and dakotah streets about 9:50 p m friday resulted in the death of george clayton diehl 20 son of mr and mrs george r diehl 554 benner avenue fountain hill all that is known of the circum stances is that diehl who was driv ing west on seneca street crashed into underwood's drive-it-your self going north up the steep hill on dakotah street in a slow second gear the motorcycle struck the se dan broadside at the front door diehl was thrown to the ground he was rushed to st luke's hospital where he died at 2:30 o'clock sat urday morning death was due to a fractured skull and other injuries the face a student nurse at st luke's hospital who accompanied underwood also received minor cuts about the face and forehead victim saw the car as the accident occurred under wood was returning home when he saw the motorcycle coming tow ards him on the level street he applied the brakes but too late to avoid diehl who crashed into his car the skid tracks of the motor cycle are evidence that diehl saw the car too late to avert the acci dent that he regretted the most unfor tunate accident and that he wished to forget it was all underwood wished to say he is not being held on any charge and the authorities have as yet taken no action there will be the regular coroner's investigation in several days followed by a hear ing diehl was employed by the beth lehem steel company and he was active in military circles of this city he was a member of the firing squad of battery c 213 th regiment coast artillery anti-aircraft and a member of the sons of union veterans reserves company x of the colonel robert oldham camp no 140 robot which will see lehigh monday prof fred v larkin televox is coming to bethlehem through the courtesy of the west inghouse electric and manufacturing company and he will be operated by h b stevens the automaton will run a vacuum cleaner answer a telephone and will do many other things which his master will com mand him to do professor larkin in his lecture will discuss the place of machinery in our modern civilization with graphs and slides he will bring to his audience the value of the machine to man the speaker will take his audience on an airplane trip in the past on this voyage as they sail through the air the passengers will see the development of the machine from primitive times in asia to the present in america perpetual motion and machines used in modern american homes to day will be other points touched upon in the lecture which will serve as an introduction to the mechanical man televox is the invention of roy j wensley a westinghouse engin eer televox owes his intelligence to three sound-sensitive relays when ever he hears one of these three sounds if perform the act for which this sound calls there is practically no limit to the number of things which televox can do at present he can fix furnace drafts turn light switches open doors and read electric guages televex is still a curiosity to most people but three of his brothers are working for the war department in washington one is stationed at each of three reservoirs whenever the engineer at the central water bureau wants to know how much water in in any reservoir he calls up televox televox looks at an electric guage and answers in a prear ranged code such as this one buzz for each foot of depth new comb gives psych results nov 29 dean spoke to convention of secondary schools lehigh professor to ad dress educational club monday disciplinary action concerning the conduct of five students on the campus on the night before the lafayette game was acted upon at the faculty meeting monday dec 2 with the result that the offending students were placed on conduct probation for the rest of the sem ester dean's letter at a meeting of the committee on discipline on nov 26 five stu dents including two juniors and three sophomores were placed on disciplinary probation for the re mainder of the current academic year for attempted removal or de facement of signs on the campus on the night of friday nov 22 the possible maximum penalty provided in the university rules for offenses of this character is expul sion from the university in impos ing this very mild penalty in these cases the committee took into ac count the fact that they occurred on a night of special excitement ■as chairman of the committee i was instructed by the committee to give notice in the brown and white that if further vandalism of this sort occurs and its perpetrators are detected the committee will be under the necessity of suspending the offenders from the university c m mcconn dean changes in engineering physics ethics and the addition of a new course in biology were also ap proved by the faculty at the meet ing the entrance requirements in latin were changed in accordance w,ith those of the college entrance board the board no longer requires the usual four books of ceasar six ora tions of cicero and six books of vergil's aeneid for the second third and fourth years but states that the reading shall not be less than this amount it recommends readings with which to replace the standard requirements other business of the meeting in cluded the approval and adoption of spring sports schedules in base ball and lacrosse the playing of the postponed soccer game with lafayette tuesday dec 3 was also approved life liberty and education was the topic of the talk given at the regular monthly meeting of the bethlehem woman's club dec 2 by dean max mcconn in his talk he desclosed a plan for higher education in this coun try which is already being tried out on a small scale he dealt with two groups one critical with the general opinion that all college stu dents are morons and invariably waste the four years spent in col lege the second group on the oth er hand are defensive maintaining that today's college students are as good as they have ever been dean mcconn also spoke at length on the present large enroll ment in colleges and commented on the fact that many of the present undergraduates are either unfitted or do not wish to be in college and in either case they do not belong there dean mcconn's speech was re ceived by an audience that was comprised in the most part with a people facing the problem of sending children to school glee club plans trip the lehigh glee club is com pleting arrangements with the new york lehigh club to present a con cert in new york city some time this season plans for concerts in new jersey and in rockville cen ter long island are also under way the club will broadcast again this year as they have done in pre vious years junior women's dance tonight speakers bureau to be organized all men are not created equal this radical declaration by dean c m mcconn was the thunderbolt which stirred the delegates attend ing the forty-third annual conven tion of the association of colloges and secondary schools of the mid dle atlantic states and maryland last friday at atlantic city prof e h riley and dean mcconn rep resented lehigh men are not created equal as serted dean mcconn either physi cally or mentally and there is no way of equalizing their differences we cannot give higher education to those men to whom colleges mean o/ily fraternities sports hip flasks a roadster and a hot date the dean asked for a more care ful selection of students by univer sities he affirmed his belief in edu cation for every youth regardless of his social or financial circum stances in life but declared that this education should be limited to the ability of the man lehigh university will be repre sented directly and indirectly at the dedication of the john markle min ing engineering hall on dec 6 and 7 at lafayette college by dr l...r drown of the department of educa tion prof howard eckfeldt of the department of mining engineering and prof m o fuller associate processor of civil engineering pro fessor eckfeldt was appointed offi cial delegate from the university by dr c r richards dr drown as an alumnus of wooster college re ceived a commission to represent charles wischart president of wooster college at the exercises and professor fuller is represent ing the chancellor of syracuse uni versity who is unable to attend at 10:45 a m dec 6 the dele gates will form at brainerd hall and the faculty of lafayette at pardee hall all in academic robes for the academic procession to the colton memorial chapel at 11 o'clock the dedication ceremonies will be held there will be a com plete inspection of the new build ing from 2:30 to 4 p m following which a tea and reception will be held for the delegates in the club room of the markle mining engin eering hall the program for the first day will be concluded with a lecture at 8:30 p m in pardee hall by mr samuel s myer on civili zations vital interests in the min eral industry a conference on the relationship between a mining education and in dustry will be held between 9 and 12 a m dec 7 in pardee hall on saturday afternoon between 1 30 and 5 there will be a symposium in pardee hall with senior students on the choice of a career due to the fact that there has been a recent tendency for some industries to be overcrowded with men desiring work while others have been lack ing in men it is expected that much benefit will be derived by the sen iors from this meeting it is hoped that this symposium will be one of the important parts of the program especially from the standpoint of the students macdougall to act as debating judge the taylor dormitories will hold an open dance at 9 p m to morrow evening in drown hall dorm dance tomorrow and n y u meet to be between lafayette richards entertains living group heads coming events warner beleives in editorials sees future for college papers the ninth annual ball of the jun ior woman's club will be held to night in the ball room of hotel bethlehem ted brownagle's vic tor recording orchestra will play for the dance which will be held from 9 o'clock until 2 a m the ball room is decorated with purple and gold trimmings tables for bridge a midnight supper and a grand march are a few of the spe cialties on the program that will tend to make the ball one of the high spots of the current social sea son miss helen achenbach mrs oliver d finnegan presidents re spectively of the junior woman's club and the bethlehem woman's club and mrs robert e neumey er will be on the receiving line at buffet supper curtis and mcconn among guests prof t m newcomb assistant professor of educational psycholo gy will speak on deductions from results of psychological examina tions given lehigh students at the faculty educational club meeting at 4 o'clock next monday afternoon in room 466 packard laboratory this speech will be on the order of a report based on a study of the records of 1300 students who en tered the university between sept 1927 and feb 1929 the items cov ered in this report will be the psy chological test results student grades ages honors and dismis sals for poor scholarship in this report professor new comb will give at least partial ans wers to such questions as the fol lowing how good a prognosis does the psychological test offer of prob able dismissal for poor scholarship or of receiving honors does the mathematics part of the test indi cate the probable success in engin eering or the language parts of the test a success in arts and sciences what are the relative chances of success in college for students en tering at the age of 16 17 18 etc are there significant differences in the percent of students in the three colleges who are drapped or who receive honors are there signifi cant differences of age of the stu dents in the three colleges professor newcomb will answer these and similar questions by fig ures and percentages which he has obtained from his study of the re sults of these exams delta omicron theta honorary debating society is sponsoring a speakers bureau to increase the in terest of the student body in pub lic speaking the bureau will pro vide audiences from various service clubs for students who desire to present topics the topics chosen will be of current interest swarthmore college has a speak er's bureau which is similar to a de bating club they send two mem bers out to the different clubs and there the students give the differ ent sides of a question such as the tariff or the kellogg peace pact the students give the good and bad points in the topic that they are discussing dr m j luch of the english department is in charge of the speaker's bureau he will listen to the talks and then give criticisms to help strengthen the weak points he will also make arrangements for students to hold several practices in some auditorium and assist them with their delivery president and mrs c r also attended the power show which is being held this week in the grand cen tral palace new york he stayed at the engineers club while away alhpa kappa psi meets of the paper it is not enough that the news story tell what is happen ing in china or russia the editorial must tell of what significance those happenings are according to warner college pa pers will eventually become the most influential organs in the coun try and he proposes that an inter national association of college pa pers be created for the circulation of news and ideas when questioned as to whether or not the editorial would evolve into a paragraph attached to the end of the news story warner was emphatic in denouncing the pro posed scheme as a foolish idea he believes that the editorial page will remain intact and that it will exist in the future as it exists today prof c d macdougall debate coach will act as critical judge of a debate between lafayette college and new york university saturday morning at the anual new jersey high school debate conference at rutgers university new brunswick n j the proposition is resolved that nations should adopt com plete disarmament excepting such forces as are necessary for police purposes lehigh is not debating this prop osition this year but the kellogg peace pact proposition which local debaters will use in most contests is similar professor macdougall will con clude arrangements for the rutgers lafayette-lehigh triangular de bate march 7 and also for several dual and single debates which are pending the complete schedule of local debates will be announced be fore christmas one or two debates probably will be broadcast from the allentown radio station psych exams given psychological examinations for the men who failed to take them at the regular scheduled time were given last monday evening in packer hall at that time 100 men reported but there are still about so in the university who have nev er taken this exam and who will be unable to graduate without it driven by erwin underwood 31 leonard hall at seneca and dakotah streets about 9:50 p m friday resulted in the death of george clayton diehl 20 son of mr and mrs george r diehl 554 benner avenue fountain hill all that is known of the circum stances is that diehl who was driv ing west on seneca street crashed into underwood's drive-it-your self going north up the steep hill on dakotah street in a slow second gear the motorcycle struck the se dan broadside at the front door diehl was thrown to the ground he was rushed to st luke's hospital where he died at 2:30 o'clock sat urday morning death was due to a fractured skull and other injuries the face a student nurse at st luke's hospital who accompanied underwood also received minor cuts about the face and forehead victim saw the car as the accident occurred under wood was returning home when he saw the motorcycle coming tow ards him on the level street he applied the brakes but too late to avoid diehl who crashed into his car the skid tracks of the motor cycle are evidence that diehl saw the car too late to avert the acci dent that he regretted the most unfor tunate accident and that he wished to forget it was all underwood wished to say he is not being held on any charge and the authorities have as yet taken no action there will be the regular coroner's investigation in several days followed by a hear ing diehl was employed by the beth lehem steel company and he was active in military circles of this city he was a member of the firing squad of battery c 213 th regiment coast artillery anti-aircraft and a member on the night before the lafayette game was acted upon at the faculty meeting monday dec 2 with the result that the offending students were placed on conduct probation for the rest of the sem ester dean's letter at a meeting of the committee on discipline on nov 26 five stu dents including two juniors and three sophomores were placed on disciplinary probation for the re mainder of the current academic year for attempted removal or de facement of signs on the campus on the night of friday nov 22 the possible maximum penalty provided in the university rules for offenses of this character is expul sion from the university in impos ing this very mild penalty in these cases the committee took into ac count the fact that they occurred on a night of special excitement ■as chairman of the committee i was instructed by the committee to give notice in the brown and white that if further vandalism of this sort occurs and its perpetrators are detected the committee will be under the necessity of suspending the offenders from the university c m mcconn dean changes in engineering physics ethics and the addition of a new course in biology were also ap proved by the faculty at the meet ing the entrance requirements in latin were changed in accordance w,ith those of the college entrance board the board no longer requires the usual four books of ceasar six ora tions of cicero and six books of vergil's aeneid for the second third and fourth years but states that the reading shall not be less than this amount it recommends readings with which to replace the standard requirements approved life liberty and education was the topic of the talk given at the regular monthly meeting of the bethlehem woman's club dec 2 by dean max mcconn in his talk he desclosed a plan for higher education in this coun try which is already being tried out on a small scale he dealt with two groups one critical with the general opinion that all college stu dents are morons and invariably waste the four years spent in col lege the second group on the oth er hand are defensive maintaining that today's college students are as good as they have ever been dean mcconn also spoke at length on the present large enroll ment in colleges and commented on the fact that many of the present undergraduates are either unfitted or do not wish to be in college and in either case they do not belong there dean mcconn's speech was re ceived by an audience that was comprised in the most part with a people facing the problem of sending children to school glee club plans trip the lehigh glee club is com pleting arrangements with the new york lehigh club to present a con cert in new york city some time this season plans for concerts in new jersey and in rockville cen ter long island are also under way speak on deductions from results of psychological examina tions given lehigh students at the faculty educational club meeting at 4 o'clock next monday afternoon in room 466 packard laboratory this speech will be on the order of a report based on a study of the records of 1300 students who en tered the university between sept 1927 and feb 1929 the items cov ered in this report will be the psy chological test results student grades ages honors and dismis sals for poor scholarship in this report professor new comb will give at least partial ans wers to such questions as the fol lowing how good a prognosis does the psychological test offer of prob able dismissal for poor scholarship or of receiving honors does the mathematics part of the test indi cate the probable success in engin eering or the language parts of the test a success in arts and sciences what are the relative chances of success in college for students en tering at the age of 16 17 18 etc are there significant differences in the percent of students in the three colleges who are drapped or who receive honors are there signifi cant differences of age of the stu dents in the three colleges professor newcomb will answer these and similar questions by fig ures and percentages which he has obtained from his study of the re sults of these exams delta omicron theta honorary debating society is sponsoring a speakers bureau to increase the in terest of the student body in pub lic speaking the bureau will pro vide audiences from various service clubs for students who desire to present topics the topics chosen will be of current interest swarthmore college has a speak er's bureau which is similar to a de bating club they send two mem bers out to the different clubs and there the students give the differ ent sides of a question such as the tariff or the kellogg peace pact the students give the good and bad points in the topic that they are discussing dr m j luch of the english department is in charge of the speaker's bureau he will listen to the talks and then give criticisms to help strengthen the weak points he will also make arrangements for students to hold several practices in some debate between lafayette college and new york university saturday morning at the anual new jersey high school debate conference at rutgers university new brunswick n j the proposition is resolved that nations should adopt com plete disarmament excepting such forces as are necessary for police purposes lehigh is not debating this prop osition this year but the kellogg peace pact proposition which local debaters will use in most contests is similar professor macdougall will con clude arrangements for the rutgers lafayette-lehigh triangular de bate march 7 and also for several dual and single debates which are pending the complete schedule of local debates will be announced be fore christmas one or two debates probably will be broadcast from the allentown radio station psych exams given psychological examinations for the men who failed to take them at the regular scheduled time were given last monday evening in packer hall at that time 100 men reported but there are still about so in
