chemistry building for the study of the struc ture of chemical and industrial ma terials with this apparatus it is possible to procuse 12 expos ures simultaneously from the same x-ray tube the unit is equipped with a coolidge type x-ray tube having a water cooled molygdenum target which is operated at 30,000 volts for the examinations of mater ials with larger unit cell dimen sions under which are included practically all organic materials it is essential that x-rays of longer wave-length than those obtainable by use of molybdenum be used to propogate these longer wave-lengths the latest model of the hadding - siegbahn gas-type x-ray tube with interchangeable targets has been installed this tube has three win dows which permit the making three simultaneous exposures to the rays since the tube is of the gas type it is essential to provide the proper supply of residual air at a reduced pressure an oil sealed ro tary vacuum pump and a lang nuir mercury diffusion pump keep the tube as well as some of the situations that these departments have to deal with according to mr thomas great care is taken in the selection of the sales personnel ticket agents and information clerks since it is these people that impress the pub lic the policy of the railroad has always been one of frankness and openness towards the public and an attempt has always been made to cooperate with the public mr thomas cncluded his speech by saying that the railroad must find ways and means of competing with the ever growing competition pre sented in the form of bus lines air ways and ship lines the theatrical group the playmakers come here sponsored by mustard and cheese practically the only group of its kind in the country the playmak ers have spent the last ten years writing producing and taking on the road plays dealing with the life of people of their state they have written tragedies about the hap penings in the life of the back woodsmen which become tradition al and from old wi.ves tales super stitions and the idiosyncrasies of field chained people they have put together some sparkling comedies paul green who won the pulitzer prize last year for his negro trag edy in abraham's bosom came from this group small groups formed realizing that the commercial theatre is doomed a conference was held at chapel hill north carolina last april to discuss this new thea tre notables and critics gathered and came to the conclusion that the future of the theatre lies in such groups as the playmakers with such an impetus numerous little theatre groups sprang up through out the country until now they have assumed the proportions of a na tional movement ideas to the extent of this change are furnished by recalling a few ex amples in north carolina there are 62 independent producing groups and 47 high school dramatic groups the south described by mencken as the sahara of the beaux arts i ssteadily undergoing a metamor phosis and the region below the mason-dixon line should no longer feel that it is aesthetically dwarfed the cultural importance of this movement is still underestimated and the dramatic critics infinitely wearied with the sterility and bal ance of the box-office stage were the ones who most thoroughly rec ognized its validity and potential ities awarding of varsity letters for spring sports were the two major events at the college meeting which was attended by approximately 1,000 students bosey reiter and william tub by miller chairman of the board of control of athletics and captain of the football team awarded the letters to the athletes forty-six let ters were awarded in four sports baseball lacrosse track and tennis we will have a wonderful bat tle with rutgers and we are a bet ter team than rutgers said okey and his words apparently renewed a somewhat waning lehigh spirit when lehigh met princeton last saturday it met a team which had the do or die spirit and far more coordinated ability than lehigh the defeat brought a somewhat overconfident lehigh team to its senses and did more good than bad breaks mean much in speaking of the lafayette game okey stated that the game will be won by the team which makes and take advantage of the breaks after a cheer by the students john conneen president of arca dia opened the meeting and intro duced okey following okey's address the awards were presented the meeting closed with the sing ing of the alma mater this meet ing was the first of three scheduled for the college year the next meet ings are april 9 and may 13 okey began his address with the statement that everybody at le high was apparently in the dumps over the showing of the football team against princeton saturday but that he for one was not he explained how we happened to meet princeton at the wrong time for our own good just when princeton needed a victory and needed it bad ly such a princeton team okey ex plained is hard for any team to stop and an overconfident lehigh team could not do it we lost our only chance by not stopping them in the first five minutes we played well in the second half of the game that goal line stand meant something princeton had its whole first string line in during the second half and its back field contained some fine backs le high's comeback showed that it has a mighty fine team letters awarded the following men were awarded letters lacrosse dexter
