committee still drags wearily on disagreement as to how severe the disapproval of censure against the connecticut member of the tariff fixing com mittee should be is delaying action of the investigating committee party lines and factions are becom ing more and more prominent in this unnecessarily prolonged inquiry of tariff preparation ♦ * ♦ senator george of georgia gave vent to a vitriolic tirade against the present tariff bill and the strangle hold of industry on the common man he insisted that the staunch courageous insurgent republicans took their political lives in their hands time after time to fight not only for the farmer but also for the common citizen * * * but no heroic attributes need be attributed to the western senators for their opposition to the tariff they merely represent their farm states and they strengthen politi cal holds with every protest they voice on the subject of tariff ev ery congressman is local he thinks and acts only for the predominate interests in his district in regard to the tariff there is no reol sen ator from the united states ♦ * * as for american industry it pos sesses no strangle-hold on the common man more than the in dustry of any other nation in the world it provides high wages short hours and a high standard of liv ing such partisan stands and ut terly biased and unsound assertions belong to a past era oratory flow ery or vituperative frequently clouds the issue and is given more often in the spirit of personal ego tism than in the cause of efficiency * ♦ ♦ john van antwerp mac murray american minister to china has tendered his resignation to accept a post with john hopkins university mr mac murray has completed more than 20 years service in the diplomatic service of the united states and is considered one of the foremost experts on conditions in the east in the world he has served in china japan and siam as well as in russia * * ♦ secretary of state stimson said that the resignation was un expected a youngquist newly appoint ed assistant attorney general in charge of prohibition says that he has never taken a drink but that he is not a fanatic on the subject the successor to the office for merly held by miss mabel wille brandt stated that there would be no carrie nation crusades against the liquor traffic this has drawn much condemnation and resentment from the ranks of the drys and the reformers ♦ * ♦ all of which brings to mind that an oklahoma farmer 65 years of age was convicted saturday of killing two men reputed to be li quor law violators this man an un official dry raider shot down his men in cold blood just recently at his trial the jurors were confronted with the spectacle of an old man weakened and spent with age urgu ing pitifully that he was sincere and a good citizen while the murdered men were technically criminals surely the country does not desire a repetition of the john brown out rage and its attendant surge of ill feeling * * * the long republican wave of prosperity has at least suffered a flurry and setback in the recent dis turbances in wall street the time worn gibe about the panic of 1893 and the depression of 1913 during the administration of the democrat ic party and its low tariff ideas has suddenly lost its tang had mr smith instead of mr hoover graced the white house republican ton gues would not have been slow to attribute the alarming stock market upheavals to democrataic misrule * ♦ ♦ but such is not the case the long praised republican era of pros perity seems just a bit unsteady this crash is not to be considered a panic by any means the essen tial foundations of american bus iness and prosperity are secure the republican egoism that it alone is the administration able to rule has taken quite a severe set back but ready voices are explain ing that such things will happen regardless of which party or pres ident is in power * * * the time has past when a policy of sitting pretty was sufficient not that coolidge passivity was un suited it may have been the ideal policy for the post war period but times are changing expansion has progressed a bit too rapidly per haps european competition is re gaining its feet a more strenuous and eventful period is ahead dr d mcfarlan moore of the incandescent lamp department of the general electric company will give a public lecture on gaseous conduction at 8 football team tore through muh lenberg to a 28-7 victory in the taylor stadium saturday afternoon weather conditions were far from ideal for football but the playing of both teams was consistently hard and bitter no less than seven muh lenberg athletes had to be helped off the field while stutz of lehigh suffered a broken collar-bone and many received a severe blow on the head which gave him a brain con cussion the mules playing on the defensive for the greater part of the game were forced to ask for time out repeatedly in order to re vive their injured warriors issel scores on pass it was in the first half that le high displayed her strongest offen sive and scored three touchdowns the initial six-pointer was not put over until 12 minutes of the first quarter had passed battalin sent a short punt to the lehigh 45-yard line after the brown and white line had held the visitors on their own 40-yard marker on the first play davidowitz cut through left tackle for 10 yards and a first down nora then tossed a lateral to ware for a short gain ware stood back in the passing position a moment later and shot a 25-yard pass diag onally across the field to issel who was so far in the open that no one could oppose his sprint over the line davvy sent a neat placement between the bars for the extra point the large crowd went into an up roar over lehigh's well executed passing attack which was beginning to catch the mules flatfooted when the brown and white needed yardage lehigh hits stride continued on page four the first seven point sent the tate machine into its stride in the second quarter which started short ly after the score lehigh again held the mules in the visitors ter ritory and forced them to kick the muhlenberg ends and tackles were nailing davidowitz in his tracks on these punts with the ball in le high's possession on her own 39 yard line the second drive for a score started nora tore off tackle for a nine-yard gain one yard was needed for a first down and ware got loose for a 15-yard run to the mules 37-yard marker davvy and ware made four yards apiece on the next two plays with an incom plete forward pass on the third ware again called upon to make the necessary yardage for a first tickets ready nov 14 undergraduates wishing only cheering section seats for lafay ette game will not make appli cation but present the lafayette game coupon in their
