it was did know of it lehigh's athletic policy was crit icized among those of over 100 oth er collegiate institutions in a report issued as a result of a three-year investigation of intercollegiate ath letics undertaken by the carnegie foundation lehigh's offense in policy was a minor one according to the report and consisted in the university's ap parent recognition of an athletic scholarship awarded by an alumnus to the student who is both an ex cellent scholar and athlete but who is unable to finance a college educa tion of the 130 colleges and secondary schools visited during the course of three and a half years only 28 were reported by the committee as be ing entirely free from subsidizing or recruiting athletes although le high did not escape entirely from the charge the committee service since the beginning of the war and is considered one of the most experienced pilots in the country he is at present chief pilot of the allentown aviation corpor ation leaving at noon saturday report brings into the open matters which have previously been backstairs gossip the evils which it attacks are real evils and intend ed to blind eyes of students and al umni to the essential purpose of col lege education and of college sport lafayette college admits the cor rectness of some of the statements made concerning aid given by alum ni to athletics here in fairness to the college however the fact should be stressed that the carnegie investigators were here more than two years ago we would welcome their return at this time to observe the consistent effort being made by the administration and faculty to improve conditions no entrance concessions are made to athletes wishing to enter lafayette at least nine football players of outstanding preparatory school reputation who presented certificates of graduation from accredited schools were re fused admission to lafayette this year because they did not measure up to other standards set by the col lege in the registrar's williams hall at 8 o'clock last evening these pho tographs made in dr haff's own hospital in northampton were all made under his supervision to show unusual conditions of fracture and organic discussion of the baffling joint disease arthritis by michel farrel instructor in bacteriology and mrs c d macdougall grad uate research investigator in bacter iology mrs macdougall mr far rel and dr stanley thomas have just returned from the philadelphia county medical association sym posium on arthritis held last mon day in philadelphia the speakers outlined the symptoms and results of the disease and explained present theories on the causes of the afflic tion lehigh is at present doing bac teriological research on the mi crobes causing arthritis letters and records of lehigh pre-medical graduates now in med ical schools were read and discuss ed by the pre-meds new members were also welcomed the meeting after the addresses was turned over to an informal discussion followed library it will house the priceless books of the university's library shelves encased with glass and reaching from the floor to the ceil ing will extend around the room part of the shelves will be paneled this with the massive ceiling beams and paneled bays will give the trea sure room of the library the appear ance of an early english library several finely upholstered chairs will be placed in the corners of the room priceless books of the library among them six shakesperian vol umes original manuscripts valued at 60,000 will be placed in the treasure room other books to be placed in the room are 10 volumes of ptolomy printed from 1475 to 1600 90 english books published before 1640 three volumes of hak luyt published between 1599 and 1600 four books of the hour a first edition of agricula-de re meticala 17 incunabulas and a number of old bibles the oldest of which was written in latin and published in 1488 among the bibles is one pub lished in english in 1583.a collec tion of achievements in philosophy on saturday afternoon a birthday din ner was held in the grand ballroom of the hotel astor professor james rowland angell of yale presided addresses were made by jane adams of hull house and by james harvey robinson a few remarks by president angell in cluded the remark that to read the list of governments organizations institutions and individuals who had sent messages of congratula tion and appreciation would take most of the afternoon this dinner was attended by 3,000 individuals who came from all parts of the country and represented every im portant educational institution winston churchill chancellor of the exechequer during the baldwin ministry visited bethlehem wed nesday as the guest of charles m schwab scholarship awarded in spite of this favorable com ment because of the fact that le high has one scholarship which dis tinctly intends to aid an athlete the university was not mentioned along with the 28 other colleges this scholarship is the one created years ago by c w parkhurst of phila delphia a graduated of lehigh in the class of 93 mr parkhurst is a firm believer in the value of ath letics and the scholarship which bears his name provides tuition for some lehigh student who is both a good scholar and an athlete and who would not be able to otherwise get a college education cowboy el liott was the beneficiary of this re ward last year when he transferred to west point this summer mr parkhurst chose harold grande a freshman as the holder of the schol arship for this year the report entitled american college athletics is the first com prehensive study of conditions of intercollegiate athletics and its ef fect on the undergraduate body bursting like a bombshell in the middle of the football season it has become the center of a storm of comments because while the com mittee has not made any attempt to rate the various colleges according to the severity of the offense names of colleges and secondary schools are used freely as examples of spe cific practices w and j charges severe the charge brought against the various colleges varied from the light one which was made against lehigh to the more serious one di rected against washington and jef ferson in this particular case the committee reported that — in an extreme case of subsidizing alumni and business men made contribu tions ranging from 10 to nearly 1,000 annually to a fund aggregat ing from 25,000 to 50,000 a year from this the college expenses of all the football players were paid and additional sums termed pay checks were disbursed to leading performers four ways are generally used by colleges according to the commit tee in subsidizing athletes — jobs and work of various kinds loans schol arships and miscellaneous assis tance the first method is the one which is used by the vast majority and the work given to the athletes are mere sinecures and the men are paid out of all proportion to the value of the services rendered in regard to the matter of loans the committee states—"unfortun ately it appears that the notes of the athletes are collectable in com partively few instances even when the fund is administered through a local the meeting president mather lewis of la fayette admitted in an interview thursday that conditions named in the carnegie report were true in the past but that for the last two years the policy of the maroon has changed president lewis stated that nine men of outstanding prep school athletic reputations had tried to enter lafayette this year but were refused as they did not meas ure up to the williams hall at 8 o'clock last evening these pho tographs made in dr haff's own hospital in northampton were all made under his supervision to show unusual conditions of fracture and organic became 70 years of age at the cele bration professor becker who was a former pupil of dr dewey pre sented a message of congratula tion and appreciation from lehigh university public acclaims dewey it was a great public acclaima tion for one whose achievements have been those of a leader of thought the auditorium in which these meetings were held could not hold the 2,000 or more who came to celebrate dr dewey's achieve ments and to acknowledge the debt which education in america and the world owes to his ideas many attend banquet at the friday evening meeting devoted to dr dewey's service to education j pierpont graves new york state commissioner of edu cation presided professor ralph barton perry of harvard presided at the saturday morning meeting which commemorated dr dewey's achievements in philosophy on saturday afternoon a birthday din ner was held in the grand ballroom of the hotel astor professor james rowland angell of yale presided addresses were made by jane adams of hull house and by james harvey robinson a few remarks by president angell in cluded the remark that to read the list of governments organizations institutions and individuals who had sent messages of congratula tion and appreciation would take most of the afternoon this dinner was attended by 3,000 individuals who came from all parts of the country and represented every im portant educational institution winston churchill chancellor of the exechequer during the baldwin ministry visited bethlehem wed nesday as the guest of charles m schwab scholarship awarded in spite of this favorable com ment because of the fact that le high has one scholarship which dis tinctly intends to aid an athlete the university was not mentioned along with the 28 other colleges this scholarship is the one created years ago by c w parkhurst of phila delphia a graduated of lehigh in the class of 93 mr parkhurst is a firm believer in the value of ath letics and the scholarship which bears his name provides tuition for some lehigh student who is both a good scholar and an athlete and who would not be able to otherwise get a college education cowboy el liott was the beneficiary of this re ward last year when he transferred to west point this summer mr parkhurst chose harold grande a freshman as the holder of the schol arship for this year the report entitled american college athletics is the first com prehensive study of conditions of intercollegiate athletics and its ef fect on the undergraduate body bursting like a bombshell in the middle of the football season it has become the center of a storm of comments because while the com mittee has not made any attempt to rate the various colleges according to the severity of the offense names of colleges and secondary schools are used freely as examples of spe cific practices w and j charges severe the charge brought against the various colleges varied from the light one which was made against lehigh to the more serious one di rected against washington and jef ferson in this particular case the committee reported that — in an extreme case of subsidizing alumni and business men made contribu tions ranging from 10 to nearly 1,000 annually to a fund aggregat ing from 25,000 to 50,000 a year from this the college expenses of all the football players were paid and additional sums termed pay checks were disbursed to leading performers four ways are generally used by colleges according to the commit tee in subsidizing athletes — jobs and work of various kinds loans schol arships and miscellaneous assis tance the first method is the one which is used by the vast majority and the work given to the athletes are mere sinecures and the men are paid out of all proportion to the value of the services rendered in regard to the matter of loans the committee states—"unfortun ately it appears that the notes of the athletes are collectable in com partively few instances even when the fund is administered through a local practice dur ing the period extending from oc tober 23 to november 30 1929 the company officers under the super vision of the regular army instruc tor with the company will select the squad including experienced freshmen and will instruct each man of this squad so that he un derstands the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship viz positions sight ing trigger squeeze and safety pre cautions before he
