history depart ment this picture the first of a series of yale university chronicles of american photoplays to be shown is as historically accurate as possible professor gipson prefaced the showing of the film with some remarks illustrated with slides con cerning previous possible discov eries of the americas columbus discovery was not an isolated discovery but a sequence of 30 centuries of such work it was pointed out the americas had probably been visited a number of times before his voyage by the norsemen breton fishermen and others columbus motive in making the voyage was not merely to find a new route to india and china but to get new lands for spain and to spread christianity before 1492 maps existed which showed land to the west of europe in approximate ly the same position as the present americas the film began with the failure of columbus to interest the king of portugal in his venture the scene then shifted to spain where queen isabella finally pledged her jewels to pay for the expedition the sail ing of the fleet from palos and the long voyage of discovery were shown the film ended after col umbus landed on watling island one of the bahamas group and took possession of the land in the name of spain the second in the series which is a new experiment in teaching his tory at lehigh will it is expected be given friday october 11 the subject will be jamestown munity fraternities alpha chi rho sigma chi and phi sig ma kappa were robbed of more than 200 evidence points to the fact that one person was responsible for all the robberies and that that person seems to have had an intimate knowledge of the fraternities that he visited in almost every case the houses robbed were those in which the men sleep on the third floor making it an easy task to enter their rooms on the second floor the alpha chi rho house suf fered the biggest loss last thurs day night when 120 in cash was taken suitcases containing 10,000 in jewelry belonging to a sales man were overlooked the thief en tered the house some tim eafter 1 30 in the morning and made a system atic search of all the desks and clothes watches and other valu ables were left untouched no one saw or heard the intruder whose method of entrance is still a mys tery thief revesits sigma chi both the sigma chi and the phi sigma kappa houses were robbed the same evening sixty dollars was taken from the phi sigma kappa house during the night the loss was not discovered until the next morning at the sigma chi house the robber was seen by two of the freshmen about 11:30 they went to the first floor to get a bed which was in the back part of the house they were surprised to find a man partly undressed lying on it he said he was a member of the fra ternity from another chapter and had come in to rest while the freshmen went upstairs reporting the incident the man disappeared the police were called and the house thoroughly searched but no traces were found of him at fre quent intervals up until 2:30 a m a policeman visited the house sometime after his last visit the bold intruder returned via a ladder to an open window and robbed the house of 30 freshmen see intruder the sigma nu house suffered heavily the house was looted twice in the same week the thief getting 80 at each visit no clues of any kind could be found probably the best description of the alleged thief was secured at the sigma phi house when he robbed that house on september 15 about 2 a m sunday morning a noise was heard in the downstairs hall upon investigation a man was dis covered who wanted to spend the night on the sofa he was told to get out when the house was quiet someone entered and took 25 the man discovered earlier in the eve ning is suspected he is described as being of medium height and weigh ing complete encyclopedia yet published the library has been particularly fortunate in obtaining one of the first editions off the press flashing a fast powerful back field and an equally powerful line together with a wealth of reserve strength the lehigh gridders over whelmed johns hopkins by a 26-0 margin in the season's first game last saturday at taylor stadium to roll up the largest score that a brown and white team has made in several years coach austy tate substituted three complete teams during the course of the game and each one of them displayed a great brand of football although the first team was responsible for the majority of the points scored the johns hopkins line was bat tered to bits by the powerful drives of the backs and the splendid work of the lehigh linemen on the de fensive lehigh did not allow the blue a first down while the brown and white amassed 13 it is hard to select the outstand ing player of the game since the number of men that were put into the game all performed brilliantly davidowitz carried over three of the four touchdowns scored and was consistently brilliant in his running back of punts bennett was responsible for many large gains and hurled several beautiful passes two of which directly resulted in touchdowns on the second team nora and ware formed a combina tion that played havoc with the johns hopkins defense nora car ried the ball a great number of times and each time tore off gains that averaged over 10 yards ware went through the hopkins line consistently for substantial gains and hurled a long pass to elkins for a touchdown pinkney proved to be a good running mate for these two and contributed greatly tow ards first downs on the first team line many played a great game at end speed ing down under the punts to drop the hopkins safety man in his tracks and breaking up many of the plays hopkins attempted to run around his end tubby miller had little opposition at tackle and opened up wide gaps in the blue line while stutz centered the ball and backed up the line to perfec tion lehigh's first score the first score came in the first three minutes of play lehigh kick ed off to johns hopkins who took possession of the ball on its own twenty yard line after an incom pleted pass hopkins punted and davvy ran the ball to the blue 40 yard line harris punted imme diately and many dropped the hopkins man on his own 20-yard line hopkins punted again and davidowitz ran the ball back with a 35-yard dash that landed the ball on hopkins 6-yard line reed ad vanced 3 yards through the line and on the next play davvy went over for the scare he also kicked the point lehigh kicked off to hopkins hopkins punted and lehigh by a series of off-tackle smashes and end runs by bennett and reed ad vanced the ball to hopkins 4-yard line hopkins held and lehigh lost the ball on downs the blue punt ed and it was lehigh's ball on the 33-yard line a pass from bennett to many netted a gain of 20 yards and another pass from bennett to davidowitz put the ball over for another score the goal kick failed the period ended with the ball on lehigh's 43-yard line after hopkins had kicked-off at the opening of the second period after on exchange of punts davvy took the ball for a gain of 30 yards placing it on the hop kins 34-yard line at this point the second team was sent in and im mediately began to play a brand of football that equalled that of the first team and in some instances bettered it tearing off three first downs in rapid succession due to the work of nora and pinkney le high had the ball on hopkins 4 yard line and first down a line smash placed the ball on the one continued on page four tht boulevards and cafes of paris are tolling a somber note as conver sation reverts to the fate of nun gesser taylor stadium to roll up the largest score that a brown and white team has made in several years coach austy tate substituted three complete teams during the course of the game and each one of them the splendid work of the lehigh linemen on the de fensive lehigh did not allow the blue a first down while the brown and white amassed 13 it is hard to select the outstand ing player of the game since the number of men that were put into the game all performed brilliantly davidowitz carried over three of the four touchdowns scored and was consistently brilliant in his running back of punts bennett johns hopkins defense nora car ried the ball a great number of times and each time tore off gains that averaged over 10 yards ware went through the hopkins line consistently for substantial gains and netted a gain of 20 yards and another pass from bennett to davidowitz put the ball over for another score the goal kick failed the period ended with the ball on lehigh's 43-yard line after hopkins had kicked-off at the opening of the second period after on exchange of punts davvy took the ball for a gain of 30 yards placing it on the hop kins 34-yard line at this point the second team was sent in and im mediately began to play a brand of football that equalled that of the first team and in some instances bettered it tearing off three first downs in rapid succession due to the work of nora and
