and three ap pointed by the cabinet local musicals for lehigh men 1929-30 community concerts seek subscriptions for department of mechanical engineer ing at rutgers university said professor larkin when i became head of the department i found the iaboratory in the form designed and built by professor r c heck who had been a major figure in the de sign of the power house and labor atory as it still existed until last year i cannot speak too highly of the skill the ingenuity and the exhaustless energy of professor heck he was able and vigorous as he has been a prolific writer with the small funds at his command and with the equipment then possessed by the university he worked wonders it was his ge nius that made the old laboratory what it was it contained a dearth of practical commercial apparatus much of the equipment present was the work of his own hands there was a good range of material for making tests on steam engines steam traps injectors and boiler fed pumps at the flme i was placed in charge the work on instruments was handled in our own labora tories while large tests were con ducted at the industries in the vi cinity of bethlehem this arrange ment made possible a wide range of equipment since the advent of the large electrical power systems much of our outside facilities have been cut down even though the plans for the new laboratory call for a full line of instruments and continued on page four a change that may affect to a marked degree the enrollment of next year's freshman class was made at a recent meeting of the faculty at the meeting they raised the entrance requirements of all new york students by ten percent previous to this rule which went into effect this summer all men en tering lehigh from new york high schools were accepted upon the marks made in their final examina tions these final examinations for graduation from high schools are made up and corrected by the board of regents of the university of the state of new york the student in order to graduate must make at least a 65 on these regent examina tions previously all students making a grade of 65 were admitted to le high without conditions however beginning with this year's fresh man class and from now on all students coming from the high schools in the state of new york must have made at least a grade of 75 percent in their regents ex amination before they will be con sidered for admission to lehigh in all its newness the packard laboratory stands out boldly among the older buildings of the campus while the old wilbur laboratory rests secluded and forgotten — al ready a thing of the past — empty rooms and old sandstone robbed of its machinery barren of tools instruments and equipment it awaits whatever fate a forgetting university may thrust upon it no more will it beckon to the student to enter its doors and search for or prove that which he may the building and its builder are now history but let us look back ward to the time when it was the thing of its day let us look back ward to the time when the cease less efforts of professor robert c heck created an engineering labor atory out of practically nothing his tools were ingenuity and per severance his materials — anything that could be procured let us not condemn it for its in efficiency it has a story a romance behind it let us not forget the old in our praise for the new professor fred v larkin head of the department of mechanical en gineering has painted a picture of the strife the work and the dreams of robert c heck 93 who was as sistant professor of mechanical en gineering at the time the wilbur engineering laboratory and power house were constructed in 1902 and 1907 and who is now head of the wife divorces former teacher library gets books as gifts from alumni unusual to the rosters of the departments among these addi tions is a three hour credit course in the history appreciation and har mony of music these courses which will be continued during the second semester are being taught by t edgar shields the arts college has added five new courses ancient history and latin drama a new course in oral spanish composition is under the spanish department a three hour credit course in art criticism and analysis rfes been opened to stu dents by the fine arts department films to be shown sohpomores will be eligible for the course in american colonial history which is offered by the de parfment of history and govern ment this course up to this time has been ocered only to juniors and seniors in connection with this subject films of the chronicles of american plays will be shown the theory of function of a com plex variable and quantum mechn ics and relativity are two new courses presented by the mathemat ics department professor l l smail will teach the former course while the latter subject will be un der the charge of professor k w lamson these courses are for graduate students only new chemistry course a new course of the graduate chemistry department at lehigh is being given by professor h v an derson who has recently returned from a year's study at the univer sity of illinois both lecture and laboratory instruction will be given in the application of radiation meth ods mainly x-ray methods to chemical and industrial chemical problems by the addtiion of 2 new jour nalism courses to be followed by two other courses the latin fraternity at the home of dr h w wright mon day evening sept 23 the award is a sterling medal with a grecian teacher and scholar depicted on the obverse and an inscription in greek and latin on board of athletic control held last mon day william tubby miller foot ball captain and heavyweight cham pion of the eastern intercollegiate wrestling association was elected chairman of the board announcements of managerships and assistant managerships of sev eral varsity and freshman sports and the ratification of schedules were among the important matters brought before the board the press box at taylor field will be inclosed for the newswriters it was also decided to use the upper field for parking purposes during home games this field however will be used only when weather permits otherwise the damage to the field would be too great it was hinted at the meeting that there is a strong possibility of le high being host to the national collegiate athletic association this meet l miller spent the summer working in the pennsylva nia department of geology he did field work for this department in connection with the revision of his previously republished volume the limestones grant ed a divorce from otto f ritzman instructor of physics at lehigh university last year in the chicago courts on charges of cruelty she asserted that ritzman spurned her afftctions after he had received de grees in several colleges that she had sent him through mrs ritzman was a stenograph er when they were married on june 7 1923 and gave her earnings to her husband so that he might con tinue his education her reward came when ritzman was awarded his masters degree at pennsylvania state college she then sent her husband through the california in stitute of technology where he re ceived his doctors degree fails to keep promise while he was in college she told superior judge b s williams her husband continually painted a pic ture of a life of ease for her when he was established in his career mrs ritzman claimed that her hus band as a professor berated over very trivial matters and scorned her lack of a college education claim ing that a professor's helpmate should be of his intellectual plane the couple separated on july 22 1928 after ritzman according to his wife had beaten and kicked her as a result of a small argument mr ritzman then went to chicago and enrolled at the university of chi cago this move she claimed was not to win the physics professor back but to obtain an education which she had always wanted she now plans to be teacher alimony was not asked by mrs ritzman it would look as if i were trying to obtain some of the money i had spent to educate my former hus band she explained mrs ritzman was given to cus tody of their five year larkin when i became head of the department i found the iaboratory in the form designed and built by professor r c heck who had been a major figure in the de sign of the power house and labor atory as it still existed until last year i cannot speak too highly of the skill the ingenuity and the exhaustless energy of professor heck he was able and vigorous as he has been a prolific writer with the small funds at his command and with the equipment then possessed by the university he worked wonders it was his ge nius that made the old laboratory what it was it contained a dearth of practical commercial apparatus much of the equipment present was the work of his own hands there was a good range of material for making tests on steam engines steam traps injectors and boiler fed pumps at the flme i was placed in charge the work on instruments was handled in our own labora tories while large tests were con ducted at the industries in the vi cinity of bethlehem this arrange ment made possible a wide range of equipment since the advent of the large electrical power systems much of our outside facilities have been cut down even though the plans for the new laboratory call for a full line of instruments and continued on page four a change that may affect to a marked degree the enrollment of next year's freshman class was made at a recent meeting of the faculty at the meeting they raised the entrance requirements of all new york students by ten percent previous to this rule which went into effect this summer all men en tering lehigh from new york high schools were accepted upon the marks made in their final examina tions these final examinations for graduation from high schools are made up and corrected by the board of regents of the university of the state of new york the student in order to graduate must make at least a 65 on these regent examina tions previously all students making a grade of 65 were admitted to le high without conditions however beginning with this year's fresh man class and from now on all students coming from the high schools in the state of new york must have made at least a grade of 75 percent in their regents ex amination before they will be con sidered for admission to lehigh in all its newness the packard laboratory stands out boldly among the older buildings of the campus while the old wilbur laboratory rests secluded and forgotten — al ready a thing of the past — empty rooms and old sandstone robbed of its machinery barren of tools instruments and equipment it awaits whatever fate a forgetting university may thrust upon it no more will it beckon to the student to enter its doors and search for or prove that which he may the building and its builder are now history but let us look back ward to the time when it was the thing of its day let us look back ward to the time when the cease less efforts of professor robert c heck created an engineering labor atory out of practically nothing his tools were ingenuity and per severance his materials — anything that could be procured let us not condemn it for its in efficiency it has a story a romance behind it let us not forget the old in our praise for the new professor fred v larkin head of the department of mechanical en gineering has painted a picture of the strife the work and the dreams of robert c heck 93 who was as sistant professor of mechanical en gineering at the time the wilbur engineering laboratory and power house were constructed in 1902 and 1907 and who is now head of the wife divorces former teacher library gets books as gifts from alumni unusual to the rosters of the departments among these addi tions is a three hour credit course in the history appreciation and har mony of music these courses which will be continued during the second semester are being taught by t edgar shields the arts college has added five new courses ancient history and latin drama a new course in oral spanish composition is under the spanish department a three hour credit course in art criticism and analysis rfes been opened to stu dents by the fine arts department films to be shown sohpomores will be eligible for the course in american colonial history which is offered by the de parfment of history and govern ment this course up to this time has been ocered only to juniors and seniors in connection with this subject films of the chronicles of american plays will be shown the theory of function of a com plex variable and quantum mechn ics and relativity are two new courses presented by the mathemat ics department professor l l smail will teach the former course while the latter subject will be un der the charge of professor k w lamson these courses are for graduate students only new chemistry course a new course of the graduate chemistry department at lehigh is being given by professor h v an derson who has recently returned from a year's study at the univer sity of illinois both lecture and laboratory instruction will be given in the application of radiation meth ods mainly x-ray methods to chemical and industrial chemical problems by the addtiion of 2 new jour nalism courses to be followed by two other courses the second sem ester it is now possible to secure a major in journalism the courses are sport writing and editorial writing the english department is offer ing a three hour course in 20th century literature epitome plans for next issue two additional men to be elected at next meeting of board the sophomore latin prize was awarded to hyman mayer at the initial meeting of eta sigma phi honorary latin fraternity at the home of dr h w wright mon day evening sept 23 the award is a sterling medal with a grecian teacher and scholar depicted on the obverse and an inscription in greek and latin on grant ed a divorce from otto f ritzman instructor of physics at lehigh university last year in the chicago courts on charges of cruelty she asserted that ritzman spurned her afftctions after he had received de grees in several colleges that she had sent him through mrs ritzman was a stenograph er when they were married on june 7 1923 and gave her earnings to her husband so that he might con tinue his education her reward came when ritzman was awarded his masters degree at pennsylvania state college she then sent her husband through the california in stitute of technology where he re ceived his doctors degree fails to keep promise while he was in college she told superior judge b s williams her husband continually painted a pic ture of a life of ease for her when he was established in his career mrs ritzman claimed that her hus band as a professor berated over very trivial matters and scorned her lack of a college education claim ing that a professor's helpmate should be of his intellectual plane the couple separated on july 22 1928 after ritzman according to his wife had beaten and kicked her as a result of a small argument mr ritzman then went to chicago and enrolled at the university of chi cago this move she claimed was not to win the physics professor back but to obtain an education which she had always wanted she now plans to be teacher alimony was not asked by mrs ritzman it would look as if i were trying to obtain some of the money i had spent to educate my former hus band she explained mrs ritzman was given to cus tody of their five year yale historical chronicles of american photoplays entitled col umbus to be given this year on the lehigh campus these plays are being presented in connection with the course in colonial history as an human behavior must give place in part to historical pre sentation of a sequence of events according to dr kurt lewin pro fessor of psychology at the univer sity of berlin in an illustrated lec ture monday afternoon in the phy sics building dr lewin in inter preting important principles of modern psychology further stated that with various psychological forces acting on an individual he is transformed into a complex pat tern of behavior in this way dr lewin attempted to explain the ex treme restlessness so marked in children and the moments of em barrassment common to all the films used
