three factors his course grades the instructors estimate of him and his grade in the comprehensive examinations lehr concludes brilliant career captain a lehr no 135 lb champion five of the six intercolle giate champions cap tain teams six title holders wrestle in meet vol xxxvi no 39 brown and white class organizes asfuture alumni senior class has movies speeches and elects officers lehigh captain won lewis prize in fresh man year vania in order the slate still re mains unblemished by a defeat the only member of the association not encountered in dual competition perm state assumes the role of dark horse as far as lehigh is con cerned and brings an undefeated dual meet record as evidence of their potentialities the dual meet record means prac tically nothing as far as the inter collegiates are concerned except to give an indication of the possibili ties of the various individuals har old phillips 115 pounder in the six meets in which he has partici pated has returned four victories for a 666 average his two defeats were sustained at navy and cor nell the navy captain throwing him in just short of the regulation time and josefson 1928 titleholder beating him by a substantial time advantage at ithaca his victories were all by safe margins therefore continued on page 3 acting as hosts for the 1829 eas tern collegiate wrestling cham pionships the lehigh matmen went into action at 2 o'clock this afternoon in defense of the team title which has rested with billy sheridan's proteges for the last two years co-titleholders with yale of the 1927 gonfalon the brown and white representatives last year gained undisputed first place and two individual championships this year the team enters the meet with the best dual meet record of any team in lehigh wrestling history only to be confronted with what from comparative records would seem to be three exceptionally pow erful teams yale cornell and perm state anyone of which is ap parently capable of gaining the title after encountering syracuse princeton navy cornell yale columbia lafayette and pennsyl rudolfs speaks to c e society seven pledged by e.e society eshbach speaks on televi sion new officers elected the biology of sewage disposal is subject of discussion ably defending its side of the question resolved that censor ship of the representative arts should be abolished the lehigh team met the temple debators in a no-decision contest last night in coppee hall lehigh defending the affirmative side attempted to prove that the need for censorship is over empha sized that censorship defea f s its own purpose and that education should be substituted for censor ship lehigh's team composed of e f underwood w m brown revere beasley and david marks who delivered the rebuttal showed better form than they displayed at the syracuse meet temple wi'h the ease and assur ance of finished debators gave the following reasons for the retention of censorship that censorship does not restrict genius that all ad vanced nations of the world favor censorship and tliat censorship is our main safeguard against the placing of improper books in the hands of the young the temple debators in the order of speaking were charles collins george par sons and william ranon who also delivered the rebuttal mr ranon was a member of the team that de bated against oxford last year at temple r j s pigott one of the fore most power plant designers in the country addressed the lehigh stu dent section of the american so ciety of mechanical engineers last evening starting with the old re ciprocating engines of ten years ago and continuing to the ul tra modern mercury vapor system of the future mr pigott traced the steps of the attempt of the mechan ical engineers to increase the over all efficiencies of the steam plant and the development of cheaper power he explained the efforts of eu ropean engineers in the realm of high pressures ad the corresponding high temperatures and mode speci fically in the use of the benson boiler which uses steam at a pres sure which exceeds the critical or in other words that pressure of the steam at which it liquifies this boiler is an unusual and daring de sign in that the pressures used were unheard of a few years ago mr piggqtt contrasted powder coal stoker and hand fired installa tions as compared to initial costs maintenance and the life of the plans he compared the advisabil ity of location in determining the particular installation as regards cheap cost of fuel and labor this address was filled with ref erences to the power plants in stalled by the lecturer tomorrow mr piggott will inspect the new packard laboratory m.i.t physicist speaks monday musical clubs play at globe captain andy lehr will con clude his collegiate wrestling car eer this week when he leads le high's first undefeated wrestling team in the intercollegiates as a member of the freshman team four years ago andy won every one of his bouts by a fall and won the lewis cup which is donated to the most promising freshman wrestler in his sophomore year as a mem ber of the varsity he placed third in the intercollegiates friday and saturday andy will be defending the 175 pound championship which he won last year at princeton and he is the favorite to repeat this year wrestling is only one of the many activities in which lehr has par ticipated while a student at lehigh he has been regular guard and cen ter on the varsity football team for the last two years and is a mem ber of the honorary sword and crescent club omicron delta kap pa scabbard and blade cyanide club and phi club he is a mem ber of the alpha tau omega fra ternity former lehigh professor will lecture on science fluharty's jazz orchestra on bill last of week student possessions left in health office if bacteriologists had entered the field of sewage disposal earlier the many problems of rapid dispo sal would have been solved long ago as it was the civil engineers working on the problem managed to do a fair job without knowing the character of the bacteria and or ganisms with which they worked in this manner dr william ru dolfs chief of the new jersey de partment of sewage disposal speak ing at the civil engineering so ciety meet last night attacked his subject of the biology of sew age disposal , professor miller read a report to the a s c e saying that the lo cal society had decided to honor the highest ranking senior civil en gineer by remitting his initiation fee and the first two year's dues as a junior member of a s c e arts & science plan submitted this year's championship wrestl ing meet is unprecedented in that there are six of the seven individ ual champions from last year ready to defend their titles the 135 pound class is the only one in which there is not a defending title holder due to the graduation of dick lewis sensational lehigh welterweight in 1928 five of these wrestlers captain their respective teams in the 115 pound division josef son the barrel-chested little wrestl er from cornell is aiming to win his second title josefson and ed dy mcgovern brown and white star in 1928 grappled for first hon ors last year the cornell cham pion will have to overcome such op position as steele of perm state and phillips of lehigh to gain an other title captain wilson of perm state is defending the 125 pound crown it will be remember ed that wilson threw mike palm of lehigh in last year's title bout after which considerable verbal comment was directed at the ref yale shifts positions since there has been much shift ing of the competitors for the 135 154 and 158 pound positions at yale this year captain dodd will undoubtedly wrestle in the 135 pound class dodd is at present 145 pound champion and is a strong possibility for the 135 pound title win graham of princeton 158 pounder enters this meet as one of the most prominent wrestlers in the association during the last three years prior to his meeting with miller former yale champion in a dual meet last year graham had been undefeated for six seasons in the intercollegiates at princeton last winter graham turned the tables and forced miller to taste de feat for the first time in seven years of wrestling graham is a favor ite to repeat this year lehr meets stafford captain andy lehr of lehigh defends his title for the brown and white lehr has been defeated twice in the last two seasons both times by stafford of cornell in du al meets stafford was wrestling out of his class on each occasion johnson also of cornell was beat en by the lehigh captain in last year's intercollegiates and will compete for the title again this year the heavyweight title is held by captain stafford of cornell staf ford was runner-up in the 190 pound class for the united states olympic team last summer being a long and rangy wrestler his reach in arms and legs give him a decided advantage over shorter op ponents triad allowed to hold dance perm state is the only team of the seven mat aggregations that are guests of lehigh this week-end that has had an undefeated season the other six have records that are cov ered with many scars in the way of defeats perm state has had little trouble in winning the dual meets cornell is the only college that gave the nittany lions a scrap perm state defeated f navy 19-6 cornell 15-12 syracuse 27-0 and western re serve 39-0 lafayette bowed 30-0 and ohio u 30-6 captain wilson 125 pound intercollegiate cham pion in 1928 has won every bout steele 115 pound has lost only to josefson of cornell eisenman 145 pounder and hubler 135 pounder have also won all their bouts this season eisenman has obtained five falls and one time advantage in de feating his opponents while hubler has three falls and two decisions to his cerdit in campbell 158 pound er the nittany lions have another undefeated wrestler in the heavy weights perm state has not been so fortunate most of the bouts lost in the dual meets were lost in the 175 and unlimited classes stafford drops to 175 although cornell had excellent prospects at the beginning of the season coach o'connell's men have had only a moderately success ful season the ithacans have won two out of five dual meets engaged in this year o'connell had cap tain stafford 175 pound intercolle giate champion in the unlimited di vision in 1928 josefson 115 pound intercollegiate champion last year and johnson 158 pounder and runner up in the 175 pound class at princeton in 1928 as the nucleus of his team lipshitz 135 troudsel 125 and mcconnell 145 have wrestled very creditably this year for new men the 158 pound class proved to be the hard place to fill and in an attempt to strength en this berth johnson is wrestling 158 instead of 175 captain staf ford has moved down to the 175 pound class leaving the heavy weight division for wakeman or gow both of whom are football men of little experience this change leaves cornell very strong in the 115 158 and 175 pound classes yale has one champion yale princeton columbia perm and syracuse the other members of the eastern intercollegiate wrestling association have had only mediocre seasons although yale has captain dodd 145 pound 1928 intercollegiate champion and sargent the elis have not shown any impressive strength in their dual meets princeton with bar field and captain graham 158 pound 1928 intercollegiate cham pion have not succeeded in winning from opponents of any recognized strength columbia perm and syracuse have held the cellar posi tion in the asociation this year professor william s franklin of the massachusetts institute of technology and formerly of the lehigh faculty will lecture on the study of science at 8 o'clock mon day evening in the physics lecture room the lecture is under the auspices of the physics club he will talk at 11 a m on the use of mechanical models in the study of electrical engineering and at 3 o'clock he will speak on wave motion these talks will be ac companied by demonstration and are primarily designed for electri cal engineering and physics stu dents all of the lectures will be open to the public • professor franklin is well-known in bethlehem having been for many years professor of physics and elec trical enginering at lehigh he in augurated in 1901 the curriculum in electrical enginering as a separate course of study three text books five notebooks and a tie have been left in dr fedko's office by students who were either careless or too sick to know what was happening mon ey one of the text books has the name dey written on the inside cov er a freshman algebra book has the name halsted on it and types of romance in the drama has the name mayor scratched all over it the note books apparently have no identification marks so anyone in need of a loose-leaf or a bound not book call at dr fedko's of fice the tie however has an iden tification mark all of its own it is black and any freshman who can distinguish one black four-in-hand tie from another is welcome to the era vet in dr fedko's office state to show hail to lehigh 9 the lehigh university electrical engineering society met last eve ning in the physics building the meet was made interesting by four important features election of new officers of the e e society pledging of seven men to eta kap pa nu a student paper by c guy att and a talk by o w eshbach 17 now of the a t & t s van blarcom called his last meeting to order and introduced prof s s seyfert who iri turn gave an introductory speech before the pledging of the eta kappa nu men seven men were pledged including two seniors s w peters and c h jenkins and five juniors f e loomis j e zeaser h f singer p a bahr and j e johnson prof seyfert stated that there would be another initiation in the fall c guyatt gave a talk on the stoboscope and its application to al ternating stability he showed by experiments how the stability of an alternating current machine could be recognized by this device the principle speaker of the meet was o w eshbach 17 special as sistant in personnel at the a t & t he opened his talk with a short review of the principles of televi sion and the problems involved he then gave his main subject every day problems in the telephone ser vice his talk was illustrated by slides he brought out six main problems office management long distance operating manufacture trans-atlantic cables and the use of the radio in trans-atlantic service the nominations for officers of the e e society were for pres ident stenert baker j e zeaser for vice president r a baker b o steinert and j o woodward for secretary j e zeaser b o steinert a h wods for treasur er j e zeaser p a bahr and t f strawn the class of 29 met jointly with the lehigh alumni association wednesday evening at the bethle hem club the meeting was held to acquaint the present senior class with their duties as future alumni and to complete plans for the class day exercises l c crewe president of the class opened the meeting after the audience had seen the three reel movie of the persent-day lehigh campus life mr crewe introduced a m buchanan executive secre tary of the alumni association who briefly explained the function of the different alumni bodies and the part that each class plays in aiding these functions the next speaker was aubrey weymouth chief engineer of post and concord new york city mr weymouth talked on the subject of loyalty among the alumni lay ing emphasis on the fact that loy alty was proved by the interest of the alumni and not by the sole fact that they paid their dues each year n e funk chief engineer of the philadelphia electric company and vice president of the alumni asso ciation and walter r okeson sec retary of the board of trustees of lehigh university gave short speeches on alumni activities the meeting was turned over to the chairman j a lyter and gen eral class business was taken up the election of a permanent class president and secretary resulted in the selection of l c crewe pres ident j a lyter secretary nom inations and elections were held for the five members of the executive committee to have charge of all fu ture reunions of the class due to a tie existing between two men for the fifth position six men were fi nally elected the men elected were t m brennan j m blackmar arthur lehr e c quinlan lee trantum j i kirkpatrick president crewe then recom mended and the class approved the following men as speakers for the class day exercises t m bren nan j i kirkpatrick j a lyter r r hertzler april 8 was select ed as the definite date for the class banquet at the price of 1.50 per plate the meeting was closed and refreshments served faculty club favors course in education the combined musical clubs and dave fluharty's lehigh syncopa tors are scheduled to present con certs at the globe theatre the week of march 17 matinees and evening performances monday tuesday and wednesday will be given by the veteran glee club and the symphony orchestra then flu harty with his cohorts will enter tain the globe's patrons the three ensuing days the musical club's program for this engagement has been slightly rearranged and shortened land sighting john peel and hail the college will be presented by the glee club the symphony or chestra will play pomp and cir cumstance and march russe while the ner at the hotel bethlehem last evening to discuss and criticize two plans for the further improvement of lehigh from the students and one from the faculty since both p^ins coincide in general outline it is expected that the best parts of each plan will be used the plans are withheld from publication at the request of the committees the faculty committee includes professors tomlinson fort percy hughes p m pahner r m smith and c c bidwell the stu dent committee consists of m s borowsky h w holt a j weis ner a j blythe and a lehr the latter submitted their plan on march 1 the result of considering various plans for the last three months when the new plans are consum mated the arts students will be ma terially benefitted a wider scope with a more liberal education will be the goal of these efforts it is their object to better the position of the arts and science college of lehigh university in the collegiate world the student activities committee has granted the union triad com posed of the kappa alpha delta phi and sigma phi fraternities permission to hold a closed dance during house party the committee also voted upon a two day house party the student activities committee recently passed a ruling that only two fraternities may combine to give a dance during house party the committee amended this ruling in the case of the union triad since the total active membership of these three fraternities is less than 60 thus permitting them to hold a closed dance during house party the committee voted favorably upon the two-day house party which the interfraternity council re cently decided to hold instead of a three-day one it also granted the alexander hamilton club permis sion to change the club's name to the international relations club select tentative cast an attraction next week at the state theatre will be the motion picture hail to lehigh present ed through the cooperation of the alumni association and the theatre the picture will be shown monday tuesday and wednesday and reg ular admission prices will be charged many phases of student life at lehigh will be depicted including football games house parties ban quets and even picking up girls from the hill-to-hill bridge amus ing and serious anecdotes alike will be included to lend a vivid col lege atmosphere to the picture president richards dean mcconn and other college officials appear engineers working on the problem managed to do a fair job without knowing the character of the bacteria and or ganisms with which they worked in this manner dr william ru dolfs chief of the new jersey de partment of sewage disposal speak ing at the civil engineering so ciety meet last night attacked his subject of the biology of sew age disposal , professor miller read a report to the a s c e saying that the lo cal society had decided to honor the highest ranking senior civil en gineer by remitting his initiation fee and the first two year's dues as a junior member of a s c e arts & science plan submitted this year's championship wrestl ing meet is unprecedented in that there are six of the seven individ ual champions from last year ready to defend their titles the 135 pound class is the only one in which there is not a defending title holder due to the graduation of dick lewis sensational lehigh welterweight in 1928 five of these wrestlers captain their respective teams in the 115 pound division josef son the barrel-chested little wrestl er from cornell is aiming to win his second title josefson and ed dy mcgovern brown and white star in 1928 grappled for first hon ors last year the cornell cham pion will have to overcome such op position as steele of perm state and phillips of lehigh to gain an other title captain wilson of perm state is defending the 125 pound crown it will be remember ed that wilson threw mike palm of lehigh in last year's title bout after which considerable verbal comment was directed at the ref yale shifts positions since there has been much shift ing of the competitors for the 135 154 and 158 pound positions at yale this year captain dodd will undoubtedly wrestle in the 135 pound class dodd is at present 145 pound champion and is a strong possibility for the 135 pound title win graham of princeton 158 pounder enters this meet as one of the most prominent wrestlers in the association during the last three years prior to his meeting with miller former yale champion in a dual meet last year graham had been undefeated for six seasons in the intercollegiates at princeton last winter graham turned the tables and forced miller to taste de feat for the first time in seven years of wrestling graham is a favor ite to repeat this year lehr meets stafford captain andy lehr of lehigh defends his title for the brown and white lehr has been defeated twice in the last two seasons both times by stafford of cornell in du al meets stafford was wrestling out of his class on each occasion johnson also of cornell was beat en by the lehigh captain in last year's intercollegiates and will compete for the title again this year the heavyweight title is held by captain stafford of cornell staf ford was runner-up in the 190 pound class for the united states olympic team last summer being a long and rangy wrestler his reach in arms and legs give him a decided advantage over shorter op ponents triad allowed to hold dance perm state is the only team of the seven mat aggregations that are guests of lehigh this week-end that has had an undefeated season the other six have records that are cov ered with many scars in the way of defeats perm state has had little trouble in winning the dual meets cornell is the only college that gave the nittany lions a scrap perm state defeated f navy 19-6 cornell 15-12 syracuse 27-0 and western re serve 39-0 lafayette bowed 30-0 and ohio u 30-6 captain wilson 125 pound intercollegiate cham pion in 1928 has won every bout steele 115 pound has lost only to josefson of cornell eisenman 145 pounder and hubler 135 pounder have also won all their bouts this season eisenman has obtained five falls and one time advantage in de feating his opponents while hubler has three falls and two decisions to his cerdit in campbell 158 pound er the nittany lions have another undefeated wrestler in the heavy weights perm state has not been so fortunate most of the bouts lost in the dual meets were lost in the 175 and unlimited classes stafford drops to 175 although cornell had excellent prospects at the beginning of the season coach o'connell's men have had only a moderately success ful season the ithacans have won two out of five dual meets engaged in this year o'connell had cap tain stafford 175 pound intercolle giate champion in the unlimited di vision in 1928 josefson 115 pound intercollegiate champion last year and johnson 158 pounder and runner up in the 175 pound class at princeton in 1928 as the nucleus of his team lipshitz 135 troudsel 125 and mcconnell 145 have wrestled very creditably this year for new men the 158 pound class proved to be the hard place to fill and in an attempt to strength en this berth johnson is wrestling 158 instead of 175 captain staf ford has moved down to the 175 pound class leaving the heavy weight division for wakeman or gow both of whom are football men of little experience this change leaves cornell very strong in the 115 158 and 175 pound classes yale has one champion yale princeton columbia perm and syracuse the other members of the eastern intercollegiate wrestling association have had only mediocre seasons although yale has captain dodd 145 pound 1928 intercollegiate champion and sargent the elis have not shown any impressive strength in their dual meets princeton with bar field and captain graham 158 pound 1928 intercollegiate cham pion have not succeeded in winning from opponents of any recognized strength columbia perm and syracuse have held the cellar posi tion in the asociation this year professor william s franklin of the massachusetts institute of technology and formerly of the lehigh faculty will lecture on the study of science at 8 o'clock mon day evening in the physics lecture room the lecture is under the auspices of the physics club he will talk at 11 a m on the use of mechanical models in the study of electrical engineering and at 3 o'clock he will speak on wave motion these talks will be ac companied by demonstration and are primarily designed for electri cal engineering and physics stu dents all of the lectures will be open to the public • professor franklin is well-known in bethlehem having been for many years professor of physics and elec trical enginering at lehigh he in augurated in 1901 the curriculum in electrical enginering as a separate course of study three text books five notebooks and a tie have been left in dr fedko's office by students who were either careless or too sick to know what was happening mon ey one of the text books has the name dey written on the inside cov er a freshman algebra book has the name halsted on it and types of romance in the drama has the name mayor scratched all over it the note books apparently have no identification marks so anyone in need of a loose-leaf or a bound not book call at dr fedko's of fice the tie however has an iden tification mark all of its own it is black and any freshman who can in the physics building the meet was made interesting by four important features election of new officers of the e e society pledging of seven men to eta kap pa nu a student paper by c guy att and a another initiation in the fall c guyatt gave a talk on the stoboscope and its application to al ternating stability he showed by experiments how the stability of an alternating current machine could be recognized by this device the principle speaker of the meet was o w eshbach 17 special as sistant in personnel at the a t & t he opened his talk with a short review of the principles of televi sion and the problems involved he then gave his main subject every day problems in the telephone ser vice his talk was illustrated by slides he brought out six main problems office management long distance association wednesday evening at the bethle hem club the meeting was held to acquaint the present senior class with their duties as future alumni and to complete plans for the class day exercises l c crewe president of the class opened the meeting after the audience had seen the three reel movie of the persent-day lehigh campus life mr crewe introduced a m buchanan executive secre tary of the alumni association who briefly explained the function of the different alumni bodies and the part that each class plays in aiding these functions the next speaker was aubrey weymouth chief engineer of post and concord new york city mr weymouth talked on the subject of loyalty among the alumni lay ing emphasis on the fact that loy alty was proved by the interest of the alumni and not by the sole fact that they paid their dues each year n e funk chief engineer of the philadelphia electric company and vice president of the alumni asso ciation and walter r okeson sec retary of the board of trustees of lehigh university gave short speeches on alumni activities the meeting was turned over to the chairman j a lyter and gen eral class business was taken up the election of a permanent class president and secretary resulted in the selection of l c crewe pres ident j a lyter secretary nom inations and elections were held for the five members of the executive committee to have charge of all fu ture reunions of the class due to a tie existing between two men for the fifth position six men were fi nally elected the men elected were t m brennan j m blackmar arthur lehr e c quinlan lee trantum j i kirkpatrick president crewe then recom mended and the class approved the following men as speakers for the class day exercises t m bren nan j i kirkpatrick j a lyter r r hertzler april 8 ner at the hotel bethlehem last evening to discuss and criticize two plans for the further improvement of lehigh from the students and one from the faculty since both p^ins coincide in general outline it is expected that the best parts of each plan will be used the plans are withheld from publication at the request of the committees the faculty committee includes professors tomlinson fort percy hughes p m pahner r m smith and c c bidwell the stu dent committee consists of m s borowsky h w holt a j weis ner a j blythe and a lehr the latter submitted their plan on march 1 the result of considering various plans for the last three months when the new plans are consum mated the arts students will be ma terially benefitted a wider scope with a more liberal education will be the goal of these efforts it is their object to better the position of the arts and science college of lehigh university in the collegiate world the student activities committee has granted the union triad com posed of the kappa alpha delta phi and sigma phi fraternities permission to hold a closed dance during house party the committee also voted upon a two day house party the student activities committee recently passed a ruling that only two fraternities may combine to give a dance during house party the committee amended this ruling in the case of the union triad since the total active membership of these three fraternities is less than 60 thus permitting them to hold a closed dance during house party the committee voted favorably upon the two-day house party which the interfraternity council re cently decided to hold instead of a three-day one it also granted the alexander hamilton club permis sion to change the club's name to the international relations club select tentative cast an attraction next week at the state theatre will be the motion picture hail to lehigh present ed through the cooperation of the alumni association and the theatre the picture will be shown monday tuesday and wednesday and reg ular admission prices will be charged many phases of student life at lehigh will be depicted including football games house parties ban quets and even picking up girls from the hill-to-hill bridge amus ing and serious anecdotes alike will be included to lend a vivid col lege atmosphere to the picture president richards dean mcconn and other college officials appear
