ed with the express desire of pre senting an excellent military or ganization during the month of april by emanuel honig the plight of a doctor who could not decide which of two patients to save from death was portrayed be fore a large bethlehem audience at liberty high school last tuesday evening when the new york thea tre guild players presented george bernard shaw's the doctor's di lemma the last of four perfor mances of the community concert association this season shaw's sparkling humor and cun ning satire makes highly enjoyable entertainment of what would oth erwise be little more than a hack neyed debate on hedonism the plot is old and not plausible but it is made interesting by the unusual characters engaged in the action can cure only ten the doctor's dilemma arises when he discovers that he can use his newly discovered cure for tubercu losis for only ten patients whereas he has 11 cases on his hands the problem then resolves itself into de ciding which of the patients is least worthy of being saved sir colen so ridgeon the puzzled doctor narrows the choice to two cases the first is a struggling physician of reputable moral integrity and the second a talented young artist louis dudedat because of his interest in the ar tist's wife jennifer an interest which is not wholly professional sir ridgeon is almost swayed to dudedat's side however subse quent developments reveal that louis is somewhat of a scoundrel unhindered by moral scruples he has centered his life upon his art worshipping it as his sole god sir ridgeon decides when sir ridgeon perceives the true character of louis and when he discovers that he has married jennifer illegally he refuses to take the case and turns it over to anoth er physician knowing full well that no one but himself can effect the louis dies insisting that his mode of life is the only true one but re vealing by his action that his art his wife and his friends have been only an aura at glory in which he might bask jennifer weds another in the last act sir ridgeon re veals that besides permitting the death of louis because he loved jennifer he was also motivated by the realization that should louis continue to live jennifer would dis cover his infidelity and would prob ably kill herself jennifer never discovers her husband's immorality and believes that his death has cut short the life of a great soul how ever she marries a stranger leaving sir ridgeon a disinterested mur derer sir ridgeon's colleagues provide much humor and are an excellent medium for shaw to satirize the medical profession each presumes himself to be the originaj source of all medical wisdom and each knows nothing their parts are excellently and realistically acted shaw's ability illustrated shaw's ability to play with his audience is well illustrated in this play he has the rare ability of building up an admirable character then pricking it like a bubble to the mystification of his audience his plot is often impossible he does not trouble himself to explain why only ten men can be saved nor to make a satisfactory lover of the doctor it might seriously be charged against him that he does not explain a doctor's moral justi fication for killing a patient this week all men who have not been vaccinated or whose vaccina tions have not taken will be noti fied of the fact by the dean those receiving notices must report to the dispensary monday march 11 where vaccinations will be given from 9 to 12 a m and 2 to 5 p m any man who is not sure about his vaccination record should call at dr bull's office and check up this ed with the express desire of pre senting an excellent military or ganization during the month of april by emanuel honig the plight of a doctor who could not decide which of two patients to save from death was portrayed be fore a large bethlehem audience at liberty high school last tuesday evening when the new york thea tre guild players presented george bernard shaw's the doctor's di lemma the last of four perfor mances of the community concert association this season shaw's sparkling humor and cun ning satire makes highly enjoyable entertainment of what would oth erwise be little more than a hack neyed debate on hedonism the plot is old and not plausible but it is made interesting by the unusual characters engaged in the action can cure only ten the doctor's dilemma arises when he discovers that he can use his newly discovered cure for tubercu losis for only ten patients whereas he has 11 cases on his hands the problem then resolves itself into de ciding which of the patients is least worthy of being saved sir colen so ridgeon the puzzled doctor narrows the choice to two cases the first is a struggling physician of reputable moral integrity and the second a talented young artist louis dudedat because of his interest in the ar tist's wife jennifer an interest which is not wholly professional sir ridgeon is almost swayed to dudedat's side however subse quent developments reveal that louis is somewhat of a scoundrel unhindered by moral scruples he has centered his life upon his art worshipping it as his sole god sir ridgeon decides when sir ridgeon perceives the true character of louis and when he discovers that he has married jennifer illegally he refuses to take the case and turns it over to anoth er physician knowing full well that no one but himself can effect the louis dies insisting that his mode of life is the only true one but re vealing by his action that his art his wife and his friends have been only an aura at glory in which he might bask jennifer weds another in the last act sir ridgeon re veals that besides permitting the death of louis because he loved jennifer he was also motivated by the realization that should louis continue to live jennifer would dis cover his infidelity and would prob ably kill herself jennifer never discovers her husband's immorality and believes that his death has cut short the life of a great soul how ever she marries a stranger leaving sir ridgeon a disinterested mur derer sir ridgeon's colleagues provide much humor and are an excellent medium for shaw to satirize the medical profession each presumes himself to be the originaj source of all medical wisdom and each knows nothing their parts are excellently and realistically acted shaw's ability illustrated shaw's ability to play with his audience is well illustrated in this play he has the rare ability of building up an admirable character then pricking it like a bubble to the mystification of his audience his plot is often impossible he does not trouble himself to explain why only ten men can be saved nor to make a satisfactory lover of the doctor it might seriously be charged against him that he does not explain a doctor's moral justi fication for killing a patient this week all men who have not been vaccinated or whose vaccina tions have not taken will be noti fied of the fact by the dean those receiving notices must report to the
