a protestation of love just in remembrance of a few you sent me quoth the ardent lover to dean mcconn and the dean's sense of humor gave vent to itself in a hearty laugh as he visualized the stacks of oratorical con test in the chapel "* there is truth in the general statement that the healthy mind does not need to concern itself ahout its health but this maxim does not hold when we think of health as the perfect functioning of mental powers for it is evident that few of us exercise to the full our powers of perception reflec tion and creative thought in most universities problems of mental health are made the special concern of some official or as at lehigh of some committee though in fact they are the concern of all this health of the mind is found in successful grappling with meaning ful tasks so that the first study of a committee on mental health deals with selecting for university oppor tunities men who are likely to find in university or campus life a thea ter where worth-while purposes are realsed through solution of prob lems daily encountered and with providing conditions which favor student activities that bring the in dividual into sympathy and cooper ation with his fellows through his own achievements oritntation is vital continued on page 4 however almost every day mem bers of the committee find them selves dealing with those who in some way are baffled either thru loss of interest in university life or through incapacity to solve the problems they encounter it is not at all surprising that among new companions and circumstances the freshman sometimes finds that his interests like uprooted plants lack the nourishment they drew from the innumerable contacts of home life indeed this problem of orien tation in college life may become acute even in the senior year con sultation with one who has made some study of this problem may re veal that loss of interest is due to physical factors to unsystematic use of time to sheer mental iner tia to unsuitable companionship to solitude or sometimes to actual lack of capacity for college work or for a partcular kind of college work boover receives engineer's award j c cranmer buried sunday the league of nations is not perfect remember it is yet a 10-year old child declared mile mery l l reymond one of the assistant librarians of the league secretaries at geneva before 30 members of the faculty and the international rela tions club of lehigh university after a luncheon at hotel bethlehem yesterday certainly the league does not do harm e r en though its opponents claim that it accomplishes no great good was mile reymond's conten tion however she cited instances of its activities along social as well as political lines to prove that it is an active force in promoting world peace she called to attention the analogy that the league is not a hospital for world ills but rather an international insurance company that can be called upon for settle ment of inter-state differences reduction of armaments is one of the most important tasks assign ed by the covenant of the league but it is also one of the most com plex being bound as it is to the problem of security continued the mademoiselle no nation as strong as it fnay be can stand alone in this day of internationalism so the united states should join because the league needs america and because america needs the league to ac quire a broader point of view this is her attitude on the situation which she considers a sorry one since the league is a tangible prod uct of the ideas of an american woodrow wilson speaking of its scope mile rey mond remarked that it is easier to draw a map of those nations not belonging to the league of nations than one including the 56 countries that have subscribed to the league covenant she added however that its services are accessible to any state and mentioned that ameri cans such as john basset moore and professor seligman of colum bia make good use of the library at geneva specialists from all over the world come to the secre tariat to look up information what evoked a laugh was the re mark that the day the queen of ru mania queen of liberia and prince of ethopia visited the league head quarters america's ambassador was jackie coogan youthful movie celebrity intersperces humor mile reymond's lecture was in terspersed with such little humor ouh incidents of the human side of the everyday workings of the coun cil and she willingly answered more intimate world court and in ternational labor office and more technical questions about the organ ization in an open informal forum after explaining 40 lantern slides picturing much of what she had mentioned in her talk mile reymond was introduced by robert i blair newly elected president of the international rela tions club who presided she is a young swiss lady in america stu dying library methods at columbia and the congressional library on her sabatical leave although it was her first formal lecture in english she was unembarrassed and her at tractive mannerisms and capable presentation won her audience she came to lehigh through the car negie endowment for international peace every attribute o f championship calibre the lehigh wrestlers swept to a 21-6 victory over a powerful yale team before a capacity crowd saturday in taylor gym although yale brought a team to bethlehem which any school could be proud of the lehigh combina tion was too much for the scrappy elis fighting for every bout the blue was forced to admit that they had struck a combination that would not accept defeat from any team even if such formidable opponents as captain dodd and sargent were to be encountered with the parti cipants in every bout showing fight and knowledge of the art of wrestl ing it was enough to keep the spec tators on their toes watching every move in each bout starting off like a story the meet took the spec tators along gently gradually in creasing the tenseness of the situa tion the bouts progressed from the 115 pound class up into those tense bouts of ziggy letowt and george benners hitting the climax in art landis bout and then grad ually letting the spectators down to earth with the last two contests struggle is intense art landis and hoffman put up the best scrap of the afternoon with art winning by a fall in eight min utes and twenty - four seconds ctarting off like two young whirl winds it was not long before the two were on the mat struggling to remain on top hoffman using his long arms to advantage came from undereneth several times with the lever art in his turn also used the lever to free himself from the lower position but he also managed to turn out by twisting when hoffman was expecting the lever to be used both men were going at a rapid pace for their weights and for a while hoffman had time advantage on landis after about five min utes had passed landis almost threw his opponent while they were engaged in one of the numerous re versals of positions but hoffman managed to squirm out just as the crowd was expecting a fall al though haffman was well coached his opponent was h little too much for him and with the aid of a crotch hold and a half-nelson lan dis forced his shoulders to the mat so tiring was the pace that hoff man was exhausted when the bout was over and required assistance to return to the bench ziggy loses tough bout in passing from a bout that won lehigh six of tis 21 points and turn ing to one which was enjoyed by the crowd but in a different way otedit must be given to ziggy let owt for the fight that he put up against captain dodd of yale who was 145 pound intercollegiate cham pion last year letowt showed his courage and unwillingness to admit defeat when he endured the terri fic beating that dodd gave him when they first went to the mat he also showed his skill when he met dodd's aggressiveness and not only gave dodd much as he received but at times more from the start zig gy was cautious but not backward about trying to take advantage of the opportunities that offered them selves after six minutes of byplay between the two in which neither of the two men got away with any thing dodd took letowt to the mat and got the head scissors on him for over a minute ziggy had to stand this errific punishment while at the same time his body was twist ed from the trunk down ziggy finally got his head free and then started to work free however dodd was too experienced for the scrappy brown and white wrestler to allow him to remain free but not good enough to gain a fall dodd won by 3:37 time advantage tries sonnenberg tackle phillips and bison started the meet and from the beginning both showed aggressiveness bison took phillips to the mat with a flying tackle but phillips came out with a lever as he was going down al though bison showed his cleverness phillips proved himself equal to the task and gained a time advantage of continued on page 4 woman's club the division of engin eering iai the national research council professor long is an authority on varnishes and lacquers which are important in insulation the sub-committee on chemistry will partly assume the work of the committee on dielectric constant the national research council views the question of electric insul ation and dielectric behavior as one of the most important factors in the addresses faculty and lehigh in ternational relations club will cost 60 millions with many apologies to the min ing engineers of the campus we proclaim to our reading public that herbert hoover is a mining en gineer it was some prophetic journal ist in search of a dope story that threw us off the track it is all clear now engineer hoover he said is seeking a civil engineer to head his war department inasmuch as he anticipated four years of country wide construction work rather than destruction by war perhaps the civils can find their lost glory in this unofficial an nouncement well many of our masculine boy friends feel relieved no longer nee dthey feel chagrined slighted or mildly jealous over lindy the glamor of romance has paled appre ciably now that the fellow has gone and done it in fact the fair ones are so disapopinted they are the ones who steer clear of lindy con versation some fellows have been known to speak of him now out of pure orneriness herbert hoover came to wash ington this week but newspaper men and politicians despair even then of learning who will constitute the hoover family a week ago it was definitely held that gover nor-general stimson of the philip pines would move into secretary of state kellogg's chair and that an drew mellon would retain his post as secretary of treasury but even these positions are now re garded as unofficially appointed the country is becoming accus tomed to silence and so it says lit tle in criticism of the silence of our president-to-be it's funny her bert's silence is being regarded as that which a business-like engineer should maintain especially on the campus is herbert commended * * • st valentine's day the day of lovers was lovingly observed in chicago seven gangsters were lined up face to a brick wall and then reduced to tatters by machine gun bullets from the hands of a rival gang disguised as police some really believe it was police work here in quiet bethlehem one feels that such stuff belongs only to the movies but evidently it does hap pen in life certainly this wholesale murder job put a gang of cut-throats out of the way more efficiently than " chicago law could have done now that this occurred federal state and city forces have united in a cleanup program so intense has been the start of the program that the murder phase of the gang war fare is being thrust into the back ground * * * calvin coolidge will quit office with the satisfaction of seeing am erica's merchant marine fairly started sixteen millions may not be a huge sum for 11 vessels in cluding the leviathan a ship that alone could not be built for 16,000,000 but nevertheless it is a sum larger than was expected paul w chapman has taken over the vessels and with the assurance that their marine value will be fully utilized the u s shipping board feels that at last it has been able to drop the poker that was becom ing too hot by some mainly those who be lieve in government ownership the withdrawal of the government from shipping is a disappointment but to all these economically inclined the introduction of a privately own ed merchant marine is a great boon the government has made a failure of the business four years ago coolidge promised to rid the coun try of the liability and it has been only now that such action has be come possible president coolidge found the bill calling for 15 ten-thousand ton cruisers and an airplane carrier worthy of his signature even with the inclusion of the time-clause calling for actual and immediate building of the ships in order to keep the bill from providing for nothing more than paper vessels * ♦ * now england and japan are sure that america considers the geneva cruiser - parity demand seriously now and only now are we raising the 1.8 to 5 disparity in the case of britain and the 1.8 to 2.5 disparity in the case of japan into something approaching the 5 to 5 and 5 to 3 parities respectively all of which irregardless means that now there is a path cut through allowing for cruiser limitation and equalization so that the gestures being flung here and there for world peace may have to be regarded may have to be * ♦ * eventually the country will suc ceed in becoming thoroughly pru dish in the matter of censorship at the same time succeeding in mak ing as great a failure of it as of prohibition the michigan legis lature has put through a bill pro hibiting the publication of crime news where is america going to find opportunity for vicarious exper ience crime stories help out without crime stories the movies breezy stories etc america will have to do the actual thing all the lehigh news first

the league of nations is not perfect remember it is yet a 10-year old child declared mile mery l l reymond one of the assistant librarians of the league secretaries at geneva before 30 members of the faculty and the international rela tions club of lehigh university after a luncheon at hotel bethlehem yesterday certainly the league does not do harm e r en though its opponents claim that it accomplishes no great good was mile reymond's conten tion however she cited instances of its activities along social as well as political lines to prove that it is an active force in promoting world peace she called to attention the analogy that the league is not a hospital for world ills but rather an international insurance company that can be called upon for settle ment of inter-state differences reduction of armaments is one of the most important tasks assign ed by the covenant of the league but it is also one of the most com plex being bound as it is to the problem of security continued the mademoiselle no nation as strong as it fnay be can stand alone in this day of internationalism so the united states should join because the league needs america and because america needs the league to ac quire a broader point of view this is her attitude on the situation which she considers a sorry one since the league is a tangible prod uct of the ideas of an american woodrow wilson speaking of its scope mile rey mond remarked that it is easier to draw a map of those nations not belonging to the league of nations than one including the 56 countries that have subscribed to the league covenant she added however that its services are accessible to any state and mentioned that ameri cans such as john basset moore and professor seligman of colum bia make good use of the library at geneva specialists from all over the world come to the secre tariat to look up information what evoked a laugh was the re mark that the day the queen of ru mania queen of liberia and prince of ethopia visited the league head quarters america's ambassador was jackie coogan youthful movie celebrity intersperces humor mile reymond's lecture was in terspersed with such little humor ouh incidents of the human side of the everyday workings of the coun cil and she willingly answered more intimate world court and in ternational labor office and more technical questions about the organ ization in an open informal forum after explaining 40 lantern slides picturing much of what she had mentioned in her talk mile reymond was introduced by robert i blair newly elected president of the international rela tions club who presided she is a young swiss lady in america stu dying library methods at columbia and the congressional library on her sabatical leave although it was her first formal lecture in english she was unembarrassed and her at tractive mannerisms and capable presentation won her audience she came to lehigh through the car negie endowment for international peace every attribute o f championship calibre the lehigh wrestlers swept to a 21-6 victory over a powerful yale team before a capacity crowd saturday in taylor gym although yale brought a team to bethlehem which any school could be proud of the lehigh combina tion was too much for the scrappy elis fighting for every bout the blue was forced to admit that they had struck a combination that would not accept defeat from any team even if such formidable opponents as captain dodd and sargent were to be encountered with the parti cipants in every bout showing fight and knowledge of the art of wrestl ing it was enough to keep the spec tators on their toes watching every move in each bout starting off like a story the meet took the spec tators along gently gradually in creasing the tenseness of the situa tion the bouts progressed from the 115 pound class up into those tense bouts of ziggy letowt and george benners hitting the climax in art landis bout and then grad ually letting the spectators down to earth with the last two contests struggle is intense art landis and hoffman put up the best scrap of the afternoon with art winning by a fall in eight min utes and twenty - four seconds ctarting off like two young whirl winds it was not long before the two were on the mat struggling to remain on top hoffman using his long arms to advantage came from undereneth several times with the lever art in his turn also used the lever to free himself from the lower position but he also managed to turn out by twisting when hoffman was expecting the lever to be used both men were going at a rapid pace for their weights and for a while hoffman had time advantage on landis after about five min utes had passed landis almost threw his opponent while they were engaged in one of the numerous re versals of positions but hoffman managed to squirm out just as the crowd was expecting a fall al though haffman was well coached his opponent was h little too much for him and with the aid of a crotch hold and a half-nelson lan dis forced his shoulders to the mat so tiring was the pace that hoff man was exhausted when the bout was over and required assistance to return to the bench ziggy loses tough bout in passing from a bout that won lehigh six of tis 21 points and turn ing to one which was enjoyed by the crowd but in a different way otedit must be given to ziggy let owt for the fight that he put up against captain dodd of yale who was 145 pound intercollegiate cham pion last year letowt showed his courage and unwillingness to admit defeat when he endured the terri fic beating that dodd gave him when they first went to the mat he also showed his skill when he met dodd's aggressiveness and not only gave dodd much as he received but at times more from the start zig gy was cautious but not backward about trying to take advantage of the opportunities that offered them selves after six minutes of byplay between the two in which neither of the two men got away with any thing dodd took letowt to the mat and got the head scissors on him for over a minute ziggy had to stand this errific punishment while at the same time his body was twist ed from the trunk down ziggy finally got his head free and then started to work free however dodd was too experienced for the scrappy brown and white wrestler to allow him to remain free but not good enough to gain a fall dodd won by 3:37 time advantage tries sonnenberg tackle phillips and bison started the meet and from the beginning both showed aggressiveness bison took phillips to the mat with a flying tackle but phillips came out with a lever as he was going down al though bison showed his cleverness phillips proved himself equal to the task and gained a time advantage of continued on page 4 woman's club mining en gineer it was some prophetic journal ist in search of a dope story that threw us off the track it is all clear now engineer hoover he said is seeking a civil engineer to head his war department inasmuch as he anticipated four years of country wide construction work rather than destruction by war perhaps the civils can find their lost glory in this unofficial an nouncement well many of our masculine boy friends feel relieved no longer nee dthey feel chagrined slighted or mildly jealous over lindy the glamor of romance has paled appre ciably now that the fellow has gone and done it in fact the fair ones are so disapopinted they are the ones who steer clear of lindy con versation some fellows have been known to speak of him now out of pure orneriness herbert hoover came to wash ington this week but newspaper men and politicians despair even then of learning who will constitute the hoover family a week ago it was definitely held that gover nor-general stimson of the philip pines would move into secretary of state kellogg's chair and that an drew mellon would retain his post as secretary of treasury but even these positions are now re garded as unofficially appointed the country is becoming accus tomed to silence and so it says lit tle in criticism of the silence of our president-to-be it's funny her bert's silence is being regarded as that which a business-like engineer should maintain especially on the campus is herbert commended * * • st valentine's day the day of lovers was lovingly observed in chicago seven gangsters were lined up face to a brick wall and then reduced to tatters by machine gun bullets from the hands of a rival gang disguised as police some really believe it was police work here in quiet bethlehem one feels that such stuff belongs only to the movies but evidently it does hap pen in life certainly this wholesale murder job put a gang of cut-throats out of the way more efficiently than " chicago law could have done now that this occurred federal state and city forces have united in a cleanup program so intense has been the start of the program that the murder phase of the gang war fare is being thrust into the back ground * * * calvin coolidge will quit office with the satisfaction of seeing am erica's merchant marine fairly started sixteen millions may not be a huge sum for 11 vessels in cluding the leviathan a ship that alone could not be built for 16,000,000 but nevertheless it is a sum larger than was expected paul w chapman has taken over the vessels and with the assurance that their marine value will be fully utilized the u s shipping board feels that at last it has been able to drop the poker that was becom ing too hot by some mainly those who be lieve in government ownership the withdrawal of the government from shipping is a disappointment but to all these economically inclined the introduction of a privately own ed merchant marine is a great boon the government has made a failure of the business four years ago coolidge promised to rid the coun try of the liability and it has been only now that such action has be come possible president coolidge found the bill calling for 15 ten-thousand ton cruisers and an airplane carrier worthy of his signature even with the inclusion of the time-clause calling for actual and immediate building of the ships in order to keep the bill from providing for nothing more than paper vessels * ♦ * now england and japan are sure that america considers the geneva cruiser - parity demand seriously now and only now are we raising the 1.8 to 5 disparity in the case of britain and the 1.8 to 2.5 disparity in the case of japan into something approaching the 5 to 5 and 5 to 3 parities respectively all of which irregardless means that now there is a path cut through allowing for cruiser limitation and equalization so that the gestures being flung here and there for world peace may have to be regarded may have to be * ♦ * eventually the country will suc ceed in becoming thoroughly pru dish in the matter of censorship at the same time succeeding in mak ing as great a failure of it as of prohibition the michigan legis lature has put through a bill pro hibiting the publication of crime news where is america going to find opportunity for vicarious exper ience crime stories help out without crime stories the movies breezy stories etc america will have to do the actual thing all the lehigh news first |
