students to relate exper iences with local police bulletin lehigh university will not close for fhe christmas holidays before wednesday dec 19 as announced in the university cal endar declared dean c m mc conn in answer to the rumor that spread of the influenza epi demic might force the discontin uance of classes after saturday chairman tom brennan collecting ideas for first event of kind here in 20 years the students of lehigh will all be wheeled to classes in baby carriages and will weigh no more than a feather this is a conclusion that may be drawn from statistic recently compiled from the last four classes entering lehigh the average age of the class of 1928 is 21.78 years the age of the classes following for the next three years decreases annually 1929—20.79 1930—20.01 1931—18.96 this alone is peculiar but when it is known that the average weight also decreases from 146.98 lbs in the class of 1928 to 142.32 lbs in the class of 1931 the foregoing conclusion is even better shown however the average height for three years starting in 1928 to 1930 increases fourteen hundredths of an inch further consideration of the statistics show that the average age of all students in the university in sept 1927 was 20.03 years the height was 68.50 in weight was 143.70 lbs at the end of the college year in june 1928 6,429 patients had re ceived treatement at the medical dispensary of which 1,357 received surgical dressings 4,450 medical treatments were given while only 442 visited the dispensary for advice in march of that year 1125 students received treatment which was more than any other month of the year only four contagious diseases were recorded during the year they were — one case of diptheria one case of scarlet fever five cases of mumps and four cases of german measles the physiotherapy department treated 6,780 persons during the year making a total of 13,029 treatments given by the health service petition compels city to demand lowering of brodhead tracks but the unique explanation for the hardness of high speed steel was forwarded by fred c a h lantsberry president of the le high university metallurgical so ciety last evening in the chandler chemical building mr lantsberry said that the hardness was due to colloidal pre cipitation and then reviewed the old crucible processes in use for many years in england for making high speed steels which were dis united states and england in the metallurgy of high speed steels the labor situation in england was discussed and england was shown to be a comparatively old country as far as the conditions in the united states were concerned the english caste system and class distinction was held to be respon sible for the existing unfavorable labor conditions here mr lants berry introduced the element of hu mor and complimented the united states by saying that the best thing that he had ever done in his lif ewas to marry an american wo man he accused england of be ing over-taxed stating that he had had to work five months of one year to pay taxes england is be ginning to see our view of things though so far as labor is concerned the english worker has just lately begun to realize that a restriction on his amount of labor is not for his own good and only increases his burden his attitude has been too conservative in the past he must change for his own protection and good continued on page four a mr simons and mr scoblionko will tell of their experiences during the student riot november 23 and of their experiences with the police and judicial departments of beth lehem mr simons was arrested four out of seven attempts from the foul line the playing of earl nemetz of last year's frosh team at guard was par ticularly favorable he scored three baskets and played an exceptionally good floor game the game from the lehigh stand point was not very impressive as the teachers were considerably troublesome throughout the first three of the four ten-minute quar ters it was not until the last per iod that the brown and white quin tet could secure a safe margin all during the first half the game was nip and tuck lehigh would go to the front by a scant one or two points only to have the defense weakened enough to allow the stroudsburg attack led by captain rundle tie the count or go into the lead with lehigh sporting a four point advantage at the close of the first half the teachers broke thru to score two baskets and tie the score at 17-17 as the gong sounded the team played as if it missed the leadership of captain harry hesse who was unable to start the game due to a severe first part of prof fort's ad dress was taken directly from a pa per which he is preparing for pub lication in the american year book of the new york times called a review of research in mathematics in the year 1928 the year book consists of a review of all develop ments in the fields of art science and literature which have taken place in the preceeding year it will be ready for publication on members of the mathe matics club last wednesday after noon a smith ch.e 30 outlined the uses of mathematics in physical chemistry pointing out just how the chemist insures accuracy in his work by means of easeful calcula tion c w granacher c e 29 discussed the number pi giving something of its history and use and r serber e e 30 described huygene's principle many sr ballots not yet returned apparently the epidemic which is now spreading through the country and has already forced the closing of several colleges has not yet as sumed serious proportions at le high this much was learned yes terday when dr r c bull direc tor of the students health service revealed actual figures of the num ber of cases of the disease thus far discovered according to dr bull but 18 cases of actual influenza and but 19 cases of what might develop into influenza have been reported since the outbreak of the sickness on december 3 however colds are quite prevalent and although esti mations are impossible it would not seem unlikely that almost half the students have been thus af flicted numerous rvtm o r s circulated about the campus from every source have wildly exaggerated con ditions practically the entire stu dent body has held the opinion that over 150 cases of the disease have been discovered and that should the epidemic fail to subside school would be stopped after sat urday indeed at one time on wednesday it was reported that the health authorities had already closed the school in no case has a serious outbreak threatened the 18 men who were found to have influenza were advis ed to go home and the others were tld to go to bed under no condi tions is it feared that an epidemic stage will be reached either at le high or in the surrounding vicin ity the dean also revoked all per mits for house dances over the week-end on the grounds that under present circumstances the crowded conditions which these create could be dangerous to the welfare of the participants other districts however are not so fortunate many of the larger schools in these stricken districts have already closed or are planning to close those known definitely to have closed are carnegit tech pittsburgh sewanee sewanee term culver military academy culver ind the university of mis souri columbia mo the seminary of st therese near montreal que bec and levis college quebec rumors that syracuse colgate and cornell are planning similar moves though not yet confirmed are nev ertheless considered fairly authen tic u s surgeon general h s cumming however advised against closing schools except in rural dis tricts close contacts in the cities are unavoidable whether the indi vidual is in school or not he said the surgeon general estimates that there are now about 200,000 cases of influenza in the country he has already called together a board of strategy to plan steps to curb the spread of the disease although he has expressed the opinion that this epidemic is certainly not so serious as was the one in 1918 go to bed the moment colds and feverishness develops advised dr bull nothing is more dangerous either to yourself or to others than to remain afoot when symptoms of severe colds or grippe are found dr bull especially stressed the fact that all students with colds should report to the health service for ex amination without delay professor f k richtmeyer of cornell university will deliver a lecture on x-ray satellites before the physics seminar december 17 at 2:45 p m and will also speak to the physics club on some impres sions in europe at 8 o'clock that evening to which the public is in vited he will be the first speaker of the club which is organizing this evening at 7:30 professor richtmeyer is a well known authority on x-ray theory and has just completed a year's tour in european universities he was especially interested in the methods and research facilities at gottigen in berlin and at the up silon university in sweden spend ing several months at the latter leach lists prominent contemporary writers the methods and uses of sheet piling as compared with wood and reinforced concrete in the building of coffer-dams and bulkheading were described by r j mclntosh piling engineer of the bethlehem steel co in his talk at the civil society meeting held the phy sics building wednesday evening mr mclntosh showed many speci mens of sheet steel piles and ex plained how the lock joints acted under strain and under water pres sure he showed many slides show ing the driving operations and the varied uses of sheet piling the strength and the lasting qualities of different types of piling under the action of salt water was discussed at the close of the talk mr mclntosh also told of the meth od used to ' raise the battleship maine which was sunk in the har bor at havana cuba in 1898 the next meeting of the society will be held january 10 at which time mr ramsey of the lehigh valley railroad co will speak on the tunneling operations in the sec ond musconetcong tunnel under musconetcong mountain several reels showing the blasting opera tions have been loaned by the du pont powder co to illustrate the talk it was announced at the meeting that members of the society may obtain charms by paying their dues and the price of the charm alumni bulletin talks of maroon mrs myers speaks on early moravian habits final abatement of the nuisance of the trolley tracks on brodhead avenue and summit street is ex pected as the result of t a resolution passed by the city council at its meeting monday morning this resolution orders the bethlehem traction company which operates the trolleys on these tracks to fix its rails and to pave between the rails and 18 inches on each side thereof this action comes as the result of a petition presented to the coun cil by the residents of these streets this petition to which are at tached the names of 52 signers in cluding president richards and other university officials claimed that the trolley tracks on these streets extend almost seven inches above the roadbed and thereby con stitute a distinct menace to motor ists and pedestrians enough ' policemen will be on hand if this becomes necessary said the mayor to see that there is no interference in tearing up the rails the resolution adopted ordered the city solicitor to notify the trac tion company that it must do the work by december 27 of this year or the city will order the rails torn up the paving must be done eith er with concrete if the weather permits or with such other mater ials as the council would agree to the condition of the trolley tracks particularly at the intersec tion of warren square has been un satisfactory since the city first laid the concrete pavement on brod head avenue motorists in nego tiating the crossing have often bumped their cars against the pro truding rails so hazardous are conditions that most autoists drive up the left side of the street rather than risk the crossing at warren square last year the city station ed a policeman on brodhead ave nue to arrest all drivers doing this but so numerous were the com plaints of the offenders that the city was forced to discontinue its action — an admission that condi tions were too bad to expect the obedience of ordinary traffic reg ulations the drastic action taken by the council is explained by the fact that similar orders to remedy con ditions were neglected by the trol ley company resolutions issued in 192 i 1925 and 1927 demanded that the tracks be lowered to the correct grades but for some unexplained reasons were never carried out the relaying of these tracks will be of special benefit to students of the university who have been among the greatest sufferers of the nuisance since most trouble is en countered in crossing the tracks at the entrance to the campus in fact several accidents have oc curred at this point in the past year traffic conditions during big sport events at the school will also be bettered by the repairs publications board discusses problems departing from the technical to stress the scenic interest of euro pean travel prof beaver of the e e department entertained a large group of electricals at their meet held in the physics building last evening punctuated with humorous sallies from the realm of the interborough rapid transit to the field of art and culture his tal kkept the men on edge throughout from england to belgium and thence through germany to france and paris he carried his listeners with the aid of slides and pictures of interior views which i know you boys will appreciate so as not to entirely separate the students from the electrical at mosphere horace g wiest deliv ered a student paper on parallel resonance phenomena with the aid of a parallel inductive and re actance circuit he showed clearly the resonant phenomena of the two opposing forces questions of students concerning the theory involved were then answered notices all football men who have not yet handed in their equipment are urged to do so before christmas vacation austy tate requests all football men who are not out for other sports to report for boxing imme diately after the christmas holidays the new issue of the alumni bulletin in addition to the usual ar ticles of the magazine contains an account of lehigh's relations with lafayette and a story on the work of the health department during the last year the lafayette article deals with the traditions between the two col leges and facts concerning the an nual football game the following the last per iod that the brown and white quin tet could secure a safe margin all during the first half the game was nip and tuck lehigh would go to the front by a scant one or two points only to have apparently the epidemic which is now spreading through the country and has already forced the closing of several colleges has not yet as sumed serious proportions at le high this much was learned yes terday when dr r c bull direc tor of the students health service revealed actual figures of the num ber of cases of the disease thus far discovered according to dr bull but 18 cases of actual influenza and but 19 cases of what might develop into influenza have been reported since the outbreak of the sickness on december 3 however colds are quite prevalent and although esti mations are impossible it would not seem unlikely that almost half the students have been thus af flicted numerous rvtm o r s circulated about the campus from every source have wildly exaggerated con ditions practically the entire stu dent body has held the opinion that over 150 cases of the disease have been discovered and that should the epidemic fail to subside school would be stopped after sat urday indeed at one time on wednesday it was reported that the health authorities had already closed the school in no case has a serious outbreak threatened the 18 men who were found to have influenza were advis ed to go home and the others were tld to go to bed under no condi tions is it feared that an epidemic stage will be reached either at le high or in the surrounding vicin ity the dean also revoked all per mits for house dances over the week-end on the grounds that under present circumstances the crowded conditions which these create could be dangerous to the welfare of the participants other districts however are not so fortunate many of the larger schools in these stricken districts have already closed or are planning to close those known definitely to have closed are carnegit tech pittsburgh sewanee sewanee term culver military academy culver ind the university of mis souri columbia mo the seminary of st therese near montreal que bec and levis college quebec rumors that syracuse colgate and cornell are planning similar moves though not yet confirmed are nev ertheless considered fairly authen tic u s surgeon general h s cumming however advised against closing schools except in rural dis tricts close contacts in the cities are unavoidable whether the indi vidual is in school or not he said the surgeon general estimates that there are now about 200,000 cases of influenza in the country he has already called together a board of strategy to plan steps to curb the spread of the disease although he has expressed the opinion that this epidemic is certainly not so serious as was the one in 1918 go to bed the moment colds and feverishness develops advised dr bull nothing is more dangerous either to yourself or to others than to remain afoot when symptoms of severe colds or grippe are found dr bull especially stressed the fact that all students with colds should report to the health service for ex amination without delay professor f k richtmeyer of cornell university will deliver a lecture on x-ray satellites before the physics seminar december 17 at 2:45 p m and will also speak to the physics club on some impres sions in europe at 8 o'clock was announced at the meeting that members of the society may obtain charms by paying their dues and the price of the charm alumni bulletin talks of maroon mrs myers speaks on early moravian habits final abatement of the nuisance of the trolley tracks on brodhead avenue and summit street is ex pected as the result of t a resolution passed by the city council at its meeting monday morning this resolution orders the bethlehem traction company which operates the trolleys on these tracks to fix its rails and to pave between the rails and 18 inches on each side thereof this action comes as the result of a petition presented to the coun cil by the residents of these streets this petition to which are at tached the names of 52 signers in cluding president richards and other university officials claimed that the trolley tracks on these streets extend almost seven inches above the roadbed and thereby con stitute a distinct menace to motor ists and pedestrians enough ' policemen will be on hand if this becomes necessary said the mayor to see that there is no interference in tearing up the rails the resolution adopted ordered the city solicitor to notify the trac tion company that it must do the work by december 27 of this year or the city will order the rails torn up the paving must be done eith er with concrete if the weather permits or with such other mater ials as the council would agree to the condition of the trolley tracks particularly at the intersec tion of warren square has been un satisfactory since the city first laid the concrete pavement on brod head avenue motorists in nego tiating the crossing have often bumped their cars against the pro truding rails so hazardous are conditions that most autoists drive up the left side of the street rather than risk the crossing at warren square last year the city station ed a policeman on brodhead ave nue to arrest all drivers doing this but so numerous were the com plaints of the offenders that the city was forced to discontinue its action — an admission that condi tions were too bad to expect the obedience of ordinary traffic reg ulations the drastic action taken by the council is explained by the fact that similar orders to remedy con ditions were neglected by the trol ley company resolutions issued in 192 i 1925 and 1927 demanded that the tracks be lowered to the correct grades but for some unexplained reasons were never carried out the relaying of these tracks will be of special benefit to students of the university who have been among the greatest sufferers of the nuisance since most trouble is en countered in crossing the tracks at the entrance to the campus in fact several accidents have oc curred at this point in the past year traffic conditions during big sport events at the school will also be bettered by the repairs publications board discusses problems departing from the technical to stress the scenic interest of euro pean travel prof beaver of the e e department
