improve ments and the present football sit uation at lehigh were the princi pal topics discussed mr buchanan secretary of the alumni association took his au dience on an imaginary tour of the campus stopping in each of the uni versity buildings to discuss new de velopments the prospects of beat ing lafayette awakened the most interest but no false hopes were raised the club was eager to know why there was not something to be done to improve our chances of winning in the future mr buch anan pointed out that sending good students to lehigh who were also good football players was the best means a lively discussion followed in which attempts were made by alum ni to understand the underlying causes of the loss of the essential close-knit lehigh spirit particularly in the last five or six years could the trouble be in the student body itself was it due to the football situation primarily what could be done to restore the loyalty of the student body to lehigh's institu tions upon suggestion of cadwal lader evans 01 a number of the members decided to come to the university earlier on the day of the games and to attempt to discover the cause of the change of spirit among the student body professor doan discussed the in crease in material assets of the or ganization due to alumni contribu tion and support the changes in the engineering curricula to supply the liberal education which should pre cede specialization in engineering or in any other professional field and , finally the increase in faculty members and their activity in re search with its stimulating effect upon the student as well as the in crease in the world's store of knowledge by the university's con tribution professor b l miller will give an illustrated talk on his observations while in the orient at will include 26 pictures this year's exhibit promises to rival in interest the one of french impressionism held last spring among the outstanding paintings is tiptoeing youth by arthur b davis painted a few years ago at west point it represents a group of nude figures treated in the misty dream-enshadowed manner which gives to davies paintings a half mystical effect john sloan is rep resented by a typical work called the great white way which as the title indicates wassuggested by the night rights of new york re cently an anonymous european col lector purchased 20 of sloan's paintings at a price which is seldom paid for contemporary work a black eyed elfish child by rob ert henri is another painting one of childe hassaun's famous flag decarated street scenes will be shown chauncey m ryden is char acteristically represented by a painting of a rain soaked bit of country side a gay springtime im pression of central park by pow ell an unusual painting of street life by lucions and an by marcel mcgoll held his audience with his beauty of ex pression and the clear resonant tone of his violin he excelled particul arly in the use of harmonic mr mcgoll was very good as accom panist giving distinct execution and never protruding himself the tuberculosis society will start its drive for the sale of seals november 30 the day after thanks giving students upon their re turn from vacation will be greeted by a letter from the local society containing seals to the value of one dollar the sale of seals has in creased yearly and the society in tends to make tljis year continue to show an increase replies should be made promptly president richards yesterday re vealed that the l'niversity will at tempt the construction of a new unit of dormitories a large auditor ium a hospital a metallurgy build ing and a big addition to the athlete plant as part of its building pro gram for the next decade this brings the prophetic vision of a greater lehigh which has been the aim and object of the un ceasing and tireless efforts of uni versity leaders for many years a step nearer reality president richards considers the greatest need of the university now that the electrical laboratory and a site has been chosen and plans are already well under way for the erection c the dormitories which the library are hearing completion according to these plans four sep arate structures will be built on the slope behind price hall extending almost to the lookout under present conditions of the 1500 students now enrolled in school 600 are accommodated in fraternity houses 171 in dormitories almost 200 in their own homes in the nearby vicinity and the remain ing 600 in private rooming houses about bethlehem although at present finances ne cessary for this project are not in sight it is hoped that the actual building will not be delayed too long as was the case with the packard lab plans are being drawn in the hope that someone in terested in the welfare and growth of lehigh will be willing to fin ance the project the alumni fund established two years ago will not be able to pay for any of this since it is being usedto cover part of the expenses for the library more over by an agreement made at that time with the alumni no drive for endowments will be launched will build on hill if these plans are followed the four buildings will be erected suc cessively one above the other on the hill overlooking the campus and valley each building is to be di vided into sections of 40 men as was done at taylor hall living quar ters will be arranged in suites of three rooms one study and two sleeping rooms and if possible each suite will be equipped with a pri vate lavatory it is planned to fit each smaller section with a living room modeled after those of the most elaborate fraternity houses and perhaps with a dining room as yet president richards has not solved the problem of provid ing meals to . dormitories some years ago this was tried in the building now used as the armory but which was then known as the commons and was used for a din ing hall however because too few students patronized the hall it ev entually had to be closed yet if 600 more men are taken into the campus this problem would have to be settled equip technical plant the past program in regard to building has been to first equip the technical plant efficiently it is only because the buildings now under construction and the repairs to the present buildings have some what accomplished this that this program has been changed to em brace the construction of proper liv ing quarters for students as soon as this is disposed of however a further attempt will be made to place other needed buildings on the campus an adequate auditorium with a seating capacity of several thousand is much to be desired the chapel is inadequate for many cer emonies which occur thoughout the year such as commencement or founder's day , much talk has been current con cerning an addition to the medical • facilities of the university through the erection of a hospital although president richards is in accord with this project the fact that the main tenance of such a plant will entail a large yearly expense makes him hesitant about predicting how soon this building can be built at least 250,000 will be needed for the con struction of a suitable hospital and an additional 25,000 will be needed each year to defray running ex penses president richards is also at tempting to start favorable action towards the building of a metallur gy building although this depart ment will undoubtedly be benefitted by moving to williams hall it would be much more advisable to provide a separate building for it because of the proximity of the continued on page four construction work on the new ad dition to the lehigh library is now thoroughly under way and is speeding toward completion ground was broken for opera tions september 7 john horeus superintendent of construction ex plained today that the work is more than one-tenth finished and com pletion of the building is expected to be arrived at by february 1930 15 months after the start there have been from 50 to 100 men on the job every day the foundation was completed monday and the steel girders are now being set up the new addi tion and the renovated old portion of the library will be modern in every detail and will compare fav orably with larger college libraries it will be in gothic architecture similar to tjie alumni memorial and james ward packard buildings there will be three stories and basement providing stack rooms reading rooms cataloguing and file rooms art and seminar rooms the space for books will be increased from 180,000 vol to 600,000 vol brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pa friday november 23 1928 vol xxxvi no 1 9 price five cents president outlines elaborate program for new buildings sixty-second grid classic raises lehighi lafayette enthusiasm to high pitch weather report fair weather for the lafayette game was the prediction of dr benjamin l miller this morn ing dr miller based his con clusions on a steadily rising bar ometer which will undoubtedly insure blue skies tomorrow a slight fall in temperature is also predicted this change will however be appreciated by both spectators and players alike construction of dormitories to be first step five other buildings including hospital auditorium field house met lab and vivarium being considered movie of campus taken last week will be shown before new york alumni association pi delta epsilon pledges four men rneta-lrar gical engineering represented the campus at the annual pre-lafayette meeting of the lehigh alumni club tuesday in scranton new additions to the engineering curri culum recent building improve ments and the present football sit uation at lehigh were the princi pal topics discussed mr buchanan secretary of the alumni association took his au dience on an imaginary tour of the campus stopping in each of the uni versity buildings to discuss new de velopments the prospects of beat ing lafayette awakened the most interest but no false hopes were raised the club was eager to know why there was not something to be done to improve our chances of winning in the future mr buch anan pointed out that sending good students to lehigh who were also good football players was the best means a lively discussion followed in which attempts were made by alum ni to understand the underlying causes of the loss of the essential close-knit lehigh spirit particularly in the last five or six years could the trouble be in the student body itself was it due to the football situation primarily what could be done to restore the loyalty of the student body to lehigh's institu tions upon suggestion of cadwal lader evans 01 a number of the members decided to come to the university earlier on the day of the games and to attempt to discover the cause of the change of spirit among the student body professor doan discussed the in crease in material assets of the or ganization due to alumni contribu tion and support the changes in the engineering curricula to supply the liberal education which should pre cede specialization in engineering or in any other professional field and , finally the increase in faculty members and their activity in re search with its stimulating effect upon the student as well as the in crease in the world's store of knowledge by the university's con tribution professor b l miller will give an illustrated talk on his observations while in the orient at a few years ago at west point it represents a group of nude figures treated in the misty dream-enshadowed manner which gives to davies paintings a half mystical effect john sloan is rep resented by a giving distinct execution and never protruding himself the tuberculosis society will start its drive for the sale of seals november 30 the day after thanks giving students upon their re turn from vacation will be greeted by a letter from the local society containing seals to the value of one dollar the sale of seals has in creased yearly and the society in tends to make tljis year continue to show an increase replies should be made promptly president richards yesterday re vealed that the l'niversity will at tempt the construction of a new unit of dormitories a large auditor ium a hospital a metallurgy build ing and a big addition to the athlete plant as part of its building pro gram for the next decade this brings the prophetic vision of a greater lehigh which has been the aim and object of the un ceasing and tireless efforts of uni versity leaders for many years a step nearer reality president richards considers the greatest need of the university now that the electrical laboratory and a site has been chosen and plans are already well under way for the erection c the dormitories which the library are hearing completion according to these plans four sep arate structures will be built on the slope behind price hall extending almost to the lookout under present conditions of the 1500 students now enrolled in school 600 are accommodated in fraternity houses 171 in dormitories almost 200 in their own homes in the nearby vicinity and the remain ing 600 in private rooming houses about bethlehem although at present finances ne cessary for this project are not in sight it is hoped that the actual building will not be delayed too long as was the case with the packard lab plans are being drawn in the hope that someone in terested in the welfare and growth of lehigh will be willing to fin ance the project the alumni fund established two years ago will not be able to pay for any of this since it is being usedto cover part of the expenses for the library more over by an agreement made at that time with the alumni no drive for endowments will be launched will build on hill if these plans are followed the four buildings will be erected suc cessively one above the other on the hill overlooking the campus and valley each building is to be di vided into sections of 40 men as was done at taylor hall living quar ters will be arranged in suites of three rooms one study and two sleeping rooms and if possible each suite will be equipped with a pri vate lavatory it is planned to fit each smaller section with a living room modeled after those of the most elaborate fraternity houses and perhaps with a dining room as yet president richards has not solved the problem of provid ing meals to . dormitories some years ago this was tried in the building now used as the armory but which was then known as the commons and was used for a din ing hall however because too few students patronized the hall it ev entually had to be closed yet if 600 more men are taken into the campus this problem would have to be settled equip technical plant the past program in regard to building has been to first equip the technical plant efficiently it is only because the buildings now under construction and the repairs to the present buildings have some what accomplished this that this program has been changed to em brace the construction of proper liv ing quarters for students as soon as this is disposed of however a further attempt will be made to place other needed buildings on the campus an adequate auditorium with a seating capacity of several thousand is much to be desired the chapel is inadequate for many cer emonies which occur thoughout the year such as commencement or founder's day , much talk has been current con cerning an addition to the medical • facilities of the university through the erection of a hospital although president richards is in accord with this project the fact that the main tenance of such a plant will entail a large yearly expense makes him hesitant about predicting how soon this building can be built at least 250,000 will be needed for the con struction of a suitable hospital and an additional 25,000 will be needed each year to defray running ex penses president richards is also at tempting to start favorable action towards the building of a metallur gy building although this depart ment will undoubtedly be benefitted by moving to williams hall it would be much more advisable to provide a separate building for it because of the proximity of the continued on page four construction work on the new ad dition to the lehigh library is now thoroughly under way and is speeding toward completion ground was broken for opera tions september 7 john horeus superintendent of construction ex plained today that the work is more than one-tenth finished and com pletion of the building is expected to be arrived at by february 1930 15 months after the start there have been from 50 to 100 men on the job every day the foundation was completed monday and the steel girders are now being set up the new addi tion and the renovated old portion of the library will be modern in every detail and will compare fav orably with larger college libraries it will be in gothic architecture similar to tjie alumni memorial and james ward packard buildings there will be three stories and basement providing stack rooms reading rooms cataloguing and file rooms art and seminar rooms the space for books will be increased from 180,000 vol to 600,000 vol brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pa friday
