meeting of the society friday night in drown hall his talk was preceded by a business meeting during which the selection of a faculty advisor and a trip to the lehigh or the northampton county court were discussed the meeting ended with a discussion of the jury system in his paper entitled what is happening to the jury and some reasons why mr ackerman who is a major in political science showed that the most poignant trend in modern juridical procedure is the abolishment of juries from the courts of america the reasons for this trend are unsatisfactory ver dicts by ignorant prejudiced and bored jurors many of whom are serving because they could not get excused or because of unworthy motives the movement to abolish juries is meeting with favor with railroads and corporations who lose thousands of dollars annually in damage suits because of preju dices of a bourgeoise jury he con cluded by stating that compensa tion commissions which award damages to all who deserve them are better able to decide verdicts than an incompetent jury president p sydney p simons is making an effort to secure a faculty advisor as soon as possible several menibers of the faculty who have already been approached have re fused because they are too busy with other tasks or did not feel themselves competent the society considered a trip which is to be made in the near future either to the lehigh or the northampton county court the trip will be made in the afternoon so that it will not be necessary for the members to cut classes in order to attend the meeting ended with a heated discussion of the jury system in which all took part after various opinions of the jury system were given in a vote ior or against the jury system only two members supported it further business concerning a change of policy was discussed by the burr board at its meeting last wednesday in drown hall the point that was brought up dealt with the localizing of jokes in the future rather than continuing the present system of humorous pro duction however no definite ac tion was taken in connection with the matter the november issue the football number is now nearing comple tion and will appear november 15 the cover is now in the hands of the engraver and all material will soon be turned in to the printer on commenting on the first issue of the burr dean mcconn stated the first edition of the burr is very credible and i trust that through out the year it will maintain the same standards lehigh's chapter of pi delta ep silon may emulate the example of honorary journalistic fraternities of many other colleges and universities in all parts of the country and es tablish this year the tradition of an annual gridiron banquet the fra ternity will discuss preliminary plans for the staging of the first banquet wednesday evening when it meets at 7:45 o'clock in the brown and white room in drown hall gridiron banquets as held in other institutions are fashioned after the celebrated classic which forms a significant part of the social life of washington's newspaperdom bids are extended only to students and faculty menibers and friends of the university deemed deserving be cause of their activities and prom inence during the academic year in many places an invitation to the gridiron banquet is one of the most distinguished honors which a man can win in any year there are never any reporters present at a gridiron banquet al though the hosts are always jour nalists guests are placed on a fig urative gridiron and roasted for their misdeeds alleged and actual i nthi srespect a gridiron banquet at lehigh would be similar to the calculus cremation of former days members of the local faculty who have been guests at gridiron ban quets in other institutions testify to both the importance which the event enjoys on the social calendar and to the good fun which is perpe trated the hoaxes are not so uni que nor so successful as those for which the original banquet is fam ous but the occasion is always one on which all present meet on a level and air themselves freely election of new members to pi delta epsilon will be made at to morrow evening's meeting the membership is now 12 played a brilliant game of defen sive football for the first half of the game against harvard at cambridge saturday after a decisive stand in the first two quarters with the mid-time score at 6-0 lehigh's line crumbled before the steam-roller onslaught of the crimson team which submerged the visitors under a 39-0 score the brown and white team which entered the game with the betting odds against them and har vard's desire to win without the use of their first team began to exhibit a defensive game that threatened to hold the cambridge boys to a scoreless tie after an exchange of punts the harvard second string backs carried the ball to lehigh's 4-yard line the steel team did not yield an inch to the powerful at tack of those crimson clad men and after four unsuccessful at tempts it was lehigh's ball cow boy elliott kicked out of danger and with the ball in mid-field har vard started another march which was stopped by the brown and white warriors on their own 20 yard line a short kick by elliott kept harvard in lehigh territory horween was not taking chances and rushed in his eight first team men who were slated for a rest saturday the appearance of cap tain french and guaranaccia gave new life to the harvard team with them carried the ball to le high's 14-yard line guaranaccia scored on the next play by an off tackle cut back just as the whistle for half-time blew score mounts horween again started his sec ond team but this time with better returns after an exchange of kicks gilligan made a first down on lehigh's 6-yard line and on the next two rushes batchelder crashed over for the second score of the game again putman ran back the kick-off to the center of the field and a pass from gilligen to hugu ley gave harvard the ball on le high's 20-yard line after six rushes batchelder carried the ball over for his second score of the day gilligan scored the next two touchdowns after run-backs by put man and forward passes to burns harvard's last score was made by greely after a beautiful 23-yard ru in which he dodged half the le high team for harvard the play ing of putman gilligan and batchelder was most oustanding sensational sporadically the bulwarks of lehigh's defense were tubby miller algernon waldman and tommy ayre art davidowitz displayed wonderful ability in broken field running and if more men had been taken out on kicks the first two quarters with the mid-time score at 6-0 lehigh's line crumbled before the steam-roller onslaught of the crimson team which submerged the visitors under a 39-0 score the brown and white team which entered the game with the betting odds against them and har vard's desire to win without the use of their first team began to exhibit a defensive game that threatened to hold the cambridge boys to a scoreless tie after an exchange of punts the harvard second string backs carried the ball to lehigh's 4-yard line the steel team did not yield an inch to the powerful at tack of those crimson clad men and after four unsuccessful at tempts it was lehigh's ball cow boy elliott kicked out of danger and with the ball in mid-field har vard started another march which was stopped by the brown and white warriors on their own 20 yard line a short kick by elliott kept harvard in lehigh territory horween was not taking chances and rushed in his eight first team men who were slated for a
