text was the answer to the ques tion which was asked him so fre quently what in your opinion is lehigh's most pressing need the answer and the text being a pro ductive endowment to yield an an nual operating budget of sufficient amount to enable the university to readjust its expenditures for the work to which it is committed so that this work may be brought in accord with the best modern stan dards president richards then goes on to state the specific needs of the university the proposed building and the architectural plans the beauty of the pamphlet is found in the pictures hand sketches of machinery and rooms in the building attractively placed so as to make each page something to look at besides a lot of printed mat ter an architect's sketch of the proposed building also adds beauty the purpose of the pamphlet is mentioned but once in the closing statement of president richards the donor of this building who ever he may be will have the sat isfaction of contributing simultan eously to the promotion of the in terests of a university whose past achievements are noteworthy to the better training of many future gen erations of young men and to the advancement of industry itself the reason for james ward packard's gift of 1,000,000 to le high for a new electrical and me chanical engineering laboratory is attributed to printed advertising by the holmes press of philadelphia in a pamphlet called perspec tive t)ct 1928 published by the holmes press there appeared an article entitled good printing con tinues to pay its own way as follows lehigh university has a prob lem a new electrical and mechan ical laboratory was needed and it would take one million dollars to build it they brought this prob lem to us here is a copy for a book said mr a e buchanan jr the designed and printed with this one purpose in mind and then from mr buch anan came a hasty message enclos ing a clipping from the lehigh alumni bulletin stating that mr james ward packard had made the desired contribution of one million dollars to lehigh the holmes press pamphlet did it ran mr buchanan's brief mes sage within two weeks after the pamphlet was mailed mr packard had given the money on regulation of the drying process in the desiccating of shredded coco nut is the title of an article writ ten by a e buchanan jr editor of the lehigh alumni bulletin for the october 1928 issue of food in dustries franklin baker is a lehigh grad uate class of 95 when in 1895 his father a philadelphia baker re ceived a cargo of coconuts instead of money in payment for flour he had shipped to cuba young baker took the situation in hand and started building up a business in shredded coconut he is now a di rector of the postum company of which the franklin baker company is a subsidiary buchanan's article deals with the mechanical processes through which the coconuts go before they become the finely shredded delicacy which we eat the franklin baker com pany has a ten story plant in new york city which is operated on a gravity flow plan the cocoanuts are first steamed and then opened and scraped by hand the chunks of coconut meat are mechanically washed and then ground buchan an describes this process as fol lows the selected nuts are conveyed by gravity to the next lower level meeting there a horizontal convey or which supplies the battery of shredding machines each of these ingenious cutters designed espe cially for this purpose consists fun damentally of a disk rotating hor izontally in which three knife blades are set at an angle across the cutting edge of each blade is a row of closely spaced vertical slic ers the general appearance being reminiscent of the familiar safety razor this cutting disk rotates at the bottom of a chamber into which the nut meat drops and is then pressed against the knives by a de scending piston a coconut is re duced to the desired size in 2 or 3 seconds being thrown from the ma chine in a miniature blizzard of fluffy shreds a belt conveyor serves the battery of shredders car rying the product to a galvanized iron tank truck which is rolled to the sweetening operation nearby the remaining process consists of swetening the coconut and ad justing the moisture content the packing of this product which is easily perishable and subject to rancidity is done in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide gas college directory to appear by oct 29 associate members of sigma xi will be chosen at the first meet ing of the society at 4 p m thurs day october 25 these members will be chosen from among the fac ulty members and the upper class men who majority were underclassmen par ticularly freshmen henry w holt arcadia member in charge of the meeting emphasized the importance of better attendance at pep meet ings and it was announced that in the future freshmen will be required to attend these meetings and their attendance will be carefully checked class visits steel company's exhibits the english department recently received from the houghton miff lin publishing company a letter which is now posted on the depart ment bulletin board in christmas saucon hall this letter indicates a growing interest on the part of publishing houses in college writers and in vites cooperation with the english department in bringing students with literary talent to their notice direct correspondence with stu dents possessing writing ability is objects in each case showing the progressive steps in the completion of the object although no definite announce ment can be made until february 1929 professor philip m palmer head of the arts college declared yesterday that changes in the cur ricula of the arts courses are be ing considered these changes will probably be such as to incorporate more electives for it is the inten tion to liberalize the course the committee on revision which hel dits first meeting last evening is composed of professor p m palmer chairman and professors c c bidwell t s fort r m smith and percy hughes the most famous forward pass in the history of american football was made in the game played be tween california and ohio state in the fall of 1920 standing on his own thirty-yard line harold p muller of the california eleven threw the pigskin 70 yards to the enemy goal line where howard w stephens picked it from the air for a perfect touchdown tan gloves found a pair of tan gloves found on the campus have been turned in at j g petrikin's office the owner may have same by identi fying his property contrary to a well known parable few are called but many are chosen there has been a comparatively small number of freaks roaming about the campus during the past week in order to correct this de ficiency the following disobedient children will report to the commit tee on eligibility the sophomore council at 7:30 p m wednesday oct 24 in drown hall ray hill son a palmer james nolan hel ler l kaminski schier albert cunningham and sindell tickets to harvard via the le high valley railroad and the individuals scabbard and blade is giving a tea dance in the near future to help defray the ex pense of bandages and headstones war outlawed by paris treaty sixteen nations accept kellogg peace pact stresemann of ger many first to sign surely not so very long ago just such headlines were blazoned forth on the front pages of newspapers all over the civilized world then why all the preparation certainly the peace pact must carry some weight and is to be reckoned with as more than a scrap of paper admitted that the present band uniforms are enough to cause a violent war but the_y are going to play music for our army when the time comes and as le high plays lafayette in easton this year there is no immediate danger of an attack from that quarter after much thought and consid eration it seems that the only pos sible answer to the question is that the boys who wanna be sojers have to be doing things so that they can write about them in their notebooks this seems to be as good a theory as has been advanced so let there be bigger and better wars for the benefit of the u s army and the everlasting glory of the department of military science and tactics 1 to arms to arms south mountain is being prepared for an active siege the military depart ment is at last coming into its own rifles have been issued to the sophomores and freshmen student officers have been observed prac ticing sword play chest expansion exercises to increase lung power to bellow commands are the order of the day and weekly drills are be ing held on the upper field and the various roads on the campus to condition the men for forced marches juniors taking the ad vanced courses are pacing off dis tances and making maps of the campus and its environs and the seniors have been busy marking traces on the mountain for trenches and machine gun placements and discussing with jack petrikin and pooch cranmer the possibility of erecting more fences and barbed wire entaglements on the campus a few days ago a regular army officer gave a talk on therscience of killing men through the medium of field artillery and as a result the or dinance men have shined up the french 75 that lives under the sta dium and put a new magneto on the tractor so that those of their num ber whose spurs trip them when they walk may ride it has even been rumored that that bloodthirsty an angry tiger wreaked ven geance on the fighting brown and white grid team before a colorful crowd of 18,000 in the palmer sta dium last saturday afternoon and inflicted a deep 47-0 scar in its vic tim roper's revamped team staged a surging offense and rolled up the biggest score that princeton has compiled against lehigh since the 52-0 victory of 1906 lehigh was completely outclassed in every department of the ■game and although displaying a brand of football that would have done cred it to any team they could not check the orange and black wave that crossed the lehigli goal seven times a defective defense against the tiger passes opened the gates through which he roared to victory if lehigh could have finished as it had started there might have been a different story to tell kirk shows to advantage at end the brown and white men were off to a flying start and upon re ceiving the kick-off princeton's at tack was so weak that it looked as if lehigh was going to tame the tiger the first two rushes of the nassau eleven were checked behind the line of scrimmage when captain jack kirkpatrick went through the princeton forward wall and threw the ball-carrier for losses which amounted to six yards jack converted from tackle to end because of his size played a good game at his new position and on several occasions was directly responsible for smearing princeton plays he also caught one of the few completed passes of the brown and white team which netted the tate cohorts ten yards kirk will probably be at the wing position permanently the tiger came to life too soon though and taking advantage of a break succeeded in scoring in the middle of the first period lawler one of bill roper's ends blocked bob harris kick and hockenbury another nassau player fell on the ball on lehigh's 14-yard line then the brown and white line display ed its strength holding the tiger for three downs but on the fourth requardt skirted left end for nine yards and scored the first touch down requardt was a potent ground gainer for the princeton team and in the beginning of the fourth per iod he intercepted a pass and with splendid interferring ran 55 yards through the lehigh team for a touchdown in all he crossed the brown and white goal line three times passes bewilder lehigh in the second period roper threw in his first string backfield consist ing of bennett jones norman and fanshawe from then on the tig er opened a smooth passing attack varied by a running game that had the tate machine completely non plussed and the orange and black team gained ten and 13 yards at a clip trix bennett one of the regular backs was the mainspring of the princeton offensive repeatedly he reeled off runs for large gains around end through tackle and in between times he was heaving long passes he was responsible for three more of the touchdowns and more than filled ed wittmer's place wittmer was one of the five nassau regulars on the bench dur ing the entire game because of in juries bennett was the outstand ing player of the game and thrilled lehigh and princeton fans alike with his playing the other princeton score came as a result of the first play of the third period when bennett heaved the ball to lawler who will be ser iously considered for all-american honors although covered he snatched the ball five yards back of the goal line lowry attempted to kick but failed it was he who was responsible for the five extra points for the nassau team davidowitz withdrawn early except for a few brief moments in the third quarter when bob ben nett made a first down lehigh was unable to break through the prince ton defense and even art davido witz who had to retire on account of injuries was unable to make any impression on it wynn hand play ed a good game for the brown and white team at the helmsman's post and did much to keep princeton from scoring more often between the halves the brown and white marched over to the princeton side and formed a p after which it came back to the le continued on page regulation of the drying process in the desiccating of shredded coco nut is the title of an article writ ten by a e buchanan jr editor of the lehigh alumni bulletin for the october 1928 issue of food in dustries franklin baker is a lehigh grad uate class of 95 when in 1895 his father a philadelphia baker re ceived a cargo of coconuts instead of money in payment for flour he had shipped to cuba young baker took the situation in hand and started building up a business in shredded coconut he is now a di rector of the postum company of which the franklin baker company is a subsidiary buchanan's article deals with the mechanical processes through which the coconuts go before they become the finely shredded delicacy which we eat the franklin baker com pany has a ten story plant in new york city which is operated on a gravity flow plan the cocoanuts are first steamed and then opened and scraped by hand the chunks of coconut meat are mechanically washed and then ground buchan an describes this process as fol lows the selected nuts are conveyed by gravity to the next lower level meeting there a horizontal convey or which supplies the battery of shredding machines each of these ingenious cutters designed espe cially for this purpose consists fun damentally of a disk rotating hor izontally in which three knife blades are set at an angle across the cutting edge of each blade is a row of closely spaced vertical slic ers the general appearance being reminiscent of the familiar safety razor this cutting disk rotates at the bottom of a chamber into which the nut meat drops and is then pressed against the knives by a de scending piston a coconut is re duced to the desired size in 2 or 3 seconds being thrown from the ma chine in a miniature blizzard of fluffy shreds a belt conveyor serves the battery of shredders car rying the product to a galvanized iron tank truck which is rolled to the sweetening operation nearby the remaining process consists of swetening the coconut and ad justing the moisture content the packing of this product which is easily perishable and subject to rancidity is done in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide gas college directory to appear by oct 29 stresemann of ger many first to sign surely not so very long ago just such headlines were blazoned forth on the front pages of newspapers all over the civilized world then why all the preparation certainly the peace pact must carry some weight and is to be reckoned with as more than a scrap of paper admitted that the present band uniforms are enough to cause a violent war but the_y are going to play music for our army when the time comes and as le high plays lafayette in easton this year there is no immediate danger of an attack from that quarter after much thought and consid eration it seems that the only pos sible answer to the question is that the boys who wanna be sojers have to be doing things so that they can write about them in their notebooks this seems to be as good a theory as has been advanced so let there be bigger and better wars for the benefit of the u s army and the everlasting glory of the department of military science and tactics 1 to arms to arms south mountain is being prepared for an active siege the military depart ment is at last coming into its own rifles have been issued to the sophomores and freshmen student officers have been observed prac ticing sword play chest expansion exercises to increase lung power to bellow commands are the order of the day and weekly drills are be ing held on the upper field and the various roads on the campus to condition the men for forced marches juniors taking the ad vanced courses are pacing off dis tances and making maps of the campus and its environs and the seniors have been busy marking traces on the mountain for trenches and machine gun placements and discussing with jack petrikin and pooch cranmer the possibility of erecting more fences and barbed wire entaglements on the campus a few days ago a regular army officer gave a talk on therscience of killing men through the medium of field artillery and as a result the or dinance men have shined up the french 75 that lives under the sta dium and put a new magneto on the tractor so that those of their num ber whose spurs trip them when they walk may ride it has even been rumored that that bloodthirsty an angry tiger wreaked ven geance on the fighting brown and white grid team before a colorful crowd of 18,000 in the palmer sta dium last saturday afternoon and inflicted a deep 47-0 scar in its vic tim roper's revamped team staged a surging offense and rolled up the biggest score that princeton has compiled against lehigh since the 52-0 victory of 1906 lehigh was completely outclassed in every department of the ■game and although displaying a brand of football that would have done cred it to any team they could not check the orange and black wave that crossed the lehigli goal seven times a defective defense against the tiger passes opened the gates through which he roared to victory if lehigh could have finished as it had started there might have been a different story to tell kirk shows to advantage at end the brown and white men were off to a flying start and upon re ceiving the kick-off princeton's at tack was so weak that it looked as if lehigh was going to tame the tiger the first two rushes of the nassau eleven were checked behind the line of scrimmage when captain jack kirkpatrick went through the princeton forward wall and threw the ball-carrier for losses which amounted to six yards jack converted from tackle to end because of his size played a good game at his new position and on several occasions was directly responsible for smearing princeton plays he also caught one of the few completed passes of the brown and white team which netted the tate cohorts ten yards kirk will probably be at the wing position permanently the tiger came to life too soon though and taking advantage of a break succeeded in scoring in the middle of the first period lawler one of bill roper's ends blocked bob harris kick and hockenbury another nassau player fell on the ball on lehigh's 14-yard line then the brown and white line display ed its strength holding the tiger for three downs but on the fourth requardt skirted left end for nine yards and scored the first touch down requardt was a potent ground gainer for the princeton team and in the beginning of the fourth per iod he intercepted a pass and with splendid interferring ran 55 yards through the lehigh team for a touchdown in all he crossed the brown and white goal line three times passes bewilder lehigh in the second period roper threw in his first string backfield consist ing of bennett jones norman and fanshawe from then on the tig er opened a smooth passing attack varied by a running game that had the tate machine completely non plussed and the orange and black team gained ten and 13 yards at a clip trix bennett one of the regular backs was the mainspring of the princeton offensive repeatedly he reeled off runs for large gains around end through tackle and in between times he was heaving long passes he was responsible for three more of the touchdowns and more than filled ed wittmer's place wittmer was one of the five nassau regulars on the bench dur ing the entire game because of in juries bennett was the outstand ing player of the game and thrilled lehigh and princeton fans alike with his playing the other princeton score came as a result of the first play of the third period when bennett heaved the ball to lawler who will be ser iously considered for all-american honors although covered he snatched the ball five yards back of the goal line lowry attempted to kick but failed it was he who was responsible for the five extra points for the nassau team davidowitz withdrawn early except for a few brief moments in the third quarter when bob ben nett made a first down lehigh was unable to break through the prince ton defense and even art davido witz who had to retire on account of injuries was unable to make any impression on it wynn hand play ed a good game for the brown and white team at the helmsman's post and did much to keep princeton from scoring more often between the halves the brown and white marched over to the princeton side and formed a p after which it came back to the le continued on page
