uniforms and new life slipped impressively into the 1928 season on a rain soaked taylor field saturday by outscoring st john's college of brooklyn n y with a pair of touchdowns 13-0 not since the brown and white whipped rutgers 14-0 at new brunswick november 1926 had lehigh had the situation so well in hand arthur davidowitz brilliant le high ball carrier of last year and roland cowboy elliott scintil lating little sophomore quarter back slipped by the st john tackl es and around the ends in splendid sequence davidowitz finished up a strong lehigh attack by crossing the goal line in the middle of the second quarter for the first score of the year and elliott carried the ball over on the fourth quarter the final whistle killed lehigh's chance for a third touchdown bob bennett had raced through the crimson defense for 20 yards to the 19 yard line just as the game ended because of the soggy condition of the field coach austy tate elect ed to battle st john's with straight football the forward pass as far as lehigh was concerned was shelved although st john's resort ed to this risky means of attack re peatedly tackling and punting improved noticeable in lehigh's play was the strength shown in two depart ments of the game which last year constituted chronic weaknesses the defense was characteristic by hard low tackling that last season was so infrequent as to evoke cheers from lehigh cohorts when prac ticed saturday it was the thing foe a tate-trained man to do pur vis levitz and dewey trantum were particularly effective in get ting their man in the open levitz's play at tackje was the best exhibi tion by a lehigh man in recent memory shifting tubby miller to the backfield proved to be a strate gic move for the big fullback the only brown and white man to play the entire game backed the line ad mirably besides gaining ground the few times he was called on to carry the ball the kicking too was praise worthy the kickoffs executed by jack levitz were as good as any seen on taylor field last fall even the punting was improved elliott's boots showed a likeness to those of his mentor chuck hess and what was more he was consistent har ris did not do as well in the second half in that he could not control the direction of the slippery pig skin davidowitz makes first score hindered considerably by a wet ball during the first part of the game which consisted mainly of an exchange of punts the brown and white offense swung into action at the start of the second quarter lee right halfback for st john's threw a pass into cowboy elliott's arms davidowitz was unable to get started on the first play and cow hoy elliott stood ready to punt sam hall was slow in snapping the continued on page three roberts receives 400 scholarship fourteen hundred and seventy seven students had enrolled at the close of the registration period at 5 p m monday of this total 405 are wearing black ties and dinks 396 are sophomores 302 juniors 272 seniors more severe entrance require ments and a more strict enforce ment of these requirements the new students admitted with advanced standing this year num ber 39 as against 42 in 1927 60 in 1926 88 in 1925 64 in 1924 and 33 in 1923 this falling off during the past two years is undoubtedly due to the university policy of not ad mitting students who have flunk ed out of other institutions the new students represent 20 states and five foreign countries as against 23 states and territories and four foreign countries in 1927 there are 24 fewer men from the territory outside pennsylvania new york saturday september 29 the junior class will meet as a body for the firsf time this year at a smoker at 8:15 p m thursday oct 4 in drown hall an unusual entertainment and good speakers have been secured by the commit tee in charge of arrangements austy tate captain hyde and fred trafford will make short ad dresses and by a special arrange ment with the globe theatre an exceptionally good entertainment will be offered the usual eats drinks and smokes will be pro vided the following changes were act ed upon at a regular meeting of the faculty monday afternoon in the physics lecture room 1 a new cut-probation rule was approved 2 slight changes were made in the cross country and freshman football schedules 3 new members were elected to faculty committees to replace those members absent on leave 4 the number of subjects accept able for admission was increased the new cut-probation rule which was adopted is as follows a student who persistently ab sents himself from any course shall be warned by the dean the warn ing given will ordinarily specify very narrow cut limit within which the student must keep for the re mainder of the semester if the student then oversteps this limit he shall be dropped from the univer sity forthwith a student dropped under this rule may apply to the committee on standing of students for read mission at the beginning of any subsequent semester every such application shall be considered by the committee on its individual merits a varsity cross country meet with new york university on october 13 was approved and a cross coun try meet between lehigh and la fayette freshmen was authorized although no date was set if the coaches so desire the freshman football team instead of the junior varsity has been authorized to play allentown prep professor a a diefenderfer was elected to succeed professor h v anderson on the committee on ad missions and professor bradley stoughton was elected to succeed professor t e butterfield on the committee on honorary degrees professors anderson and butter field are absent on leave the faculty approved that the list of subjects acceptable for ad mission as elective subjects page 26 of the register for 1927-28 be extended by the addition of the following english 4th unit french 4th unit german 4th unit spanish 4th unit physics 2nd unit chemistry 2nd unit biology 2nd unit business law or 1 unit inter algebra or 1 unit the faculty also approved that the following subjects be segregat ed from the general list of elec tive subjects as a supplementary list from which not more than two units may be accepted physiology and hygiene % or 1 unit manual training or 1 unit freehand drawing % unit mechanical drawing % unit bookkeeping stenography and typewriting 1 or 2 units the reason for this change is that many high schools and prep schools require that a student take four years of one of these subjects for graduation but formerly the student was allowed to offer only three of these credits as entrance credits the climatic laws of nature ap parently follow certain courses of fered at lehigh according to the view held by senior chemicals tak ing the course in engineering lab oratory those who took this course during the hot months of the summer found their work confined to testing boilers and engines but now that cooler weather has come the first plant to be inspected is the refrigeration plant of the lehigh and new england terminal ware house in west bethlehem one of the most interesting tests run this summer was that of the gas producer in the wilbur lab which had not been in operation for over fifteen years the fact that the pro ducer exploded but five times dur ing the entire test is indicative of its success an excursion was also made to the coke works of the bethlehem steel plant and tests were run on the huge steam engines whic hoperate the exhaust fans for the coke ovens other plants vis ited and tested were the lucken bach flour mill the power plant of st luke's hospital and an old brewery the trip to the brewery was a mere inspection however while the power plant of the hospi tal was so distant from all the oth er buildings of the hospital except the isolation ward that everyone at tended to their work the junior class will give a tea dance saturday oct 6 in drown hall after the p m c game from 4to 7 p m music will be furnished by dave fluharty's or chestra dcx bullard junior class presi dent in speaking of the coming dance said we want this dance to be a success every member of the junior class should attend and do his best to bring his friends journalism classes visit news plant diversified interests occupy seven here as research fellows phi club will elect new men next monday the trip was under the supervi sion of dr b l miller of the ge ology department and professor howard eckfeldt of the mining de partment the sophomore smoker heldjsst evening in drown hall which*was planned in order to arouse class spirit for the founder's day sports failed to draw a good percentage of the class the few that were there however were aroused to enthus iasm by the exhortations of fred trafford and president lyons it was requested that all sopho mores cooperate to insure a more strict enforcement of freshman reg ulations that is now apparent — de feat of the frosh tomorrow being emphasized as one of the best ways to establish class superiority and stricter jurisdiction phi club held the initial meeting of the year at the theta delta chi house last evening the chief rea son for the meeting was to summar ize the names of members of the class of 1931 who are eligible for membership in the club eligibility in the club to be based as usual on athletic ability displayed last year in freshman sports the voting will take place next monday night at a meeting to be held at the sigma nu house what actually happens in the production of a city newspaper was vividly demonstrated to classes in reporting and writing and news editing when they made a trip through the bethlehem globe times plant last friday afternoon the trip was led by curtis d mac dougall assistant professor of journalism all departments of the globe-times plant were visited and the employees questioned freely the students greatly appreciated the willingness with which the globe-times staff answered their many questions and especially the time given them by harold b far quhar editor who's who includes other lehigh men the list published in the last issue of the brown and white of lehigh faculty members whose names appear in the cur rent issue of who's who was incomplete the following men are also listed in who's who benjamin leroy miller ph.d head of the department of geol ogy tomlinson fort ph.d head of the department of invited and the tax will be 75c for stags and 1.00 for couples juniors to sponsor football tea dance soph smoker held for pep meeting crawling out of the ruins of foot ball decay the new lehigh team with a new coach new uniforms and new life slipped impressively into the 1928 season on a rain soaked taylor field saturday by outscoring st john's college of brooklyn n y with a pair of touchdowns 13-0 not since the brown and white whipped rutgers 14-0 at new brunswick november 1926 had lehigh had the situation so well in hand arthur davidowitz brilliant le high ball carrier of last year and roland cowboy elliott scintil lating little sophomore quarter back slipped by the st john tackl es and around the ends in splendid sequence davidowitz finished up a strong lehigh attack by crossing the goal line in the middle of the second quarter for the first score of the year and elliott carried the ball over on the fourth quarter the final whistle killed lehigh's chance for a third touchdown bob bennett had raced through the crimson defense for 20 yards to the 19 yard line just as the game ended because of the soggy condition of the field coach austy tate elect ed to battle st john's with straight football the forward pass as far as lehigh was concerned was shelved although st john's resort ed to this risky means of attack re peatedly tackling and punting improved noticeable in lehigh's play was the strength shown in two depart ments of the game which last year constituted chronic weaknesses the defense was characteristic by hard low tackling that last season was so infrequent as to evoke cheers from lehigh cohorts when prac ticed saturday it was the thing foe a tate-trained man to do pur vis levitz and dewey trantum were particularly effective in get ting their man in the open levitz's play at tackje was the best exhibi tion by a lehigh man in recent memory shifting tubby miller to the backfield proved to be a strate gic move for the big fullback the only brown and white man to play the entire game backed the line ad mirably besides gaining ground the few times he was called on to carry the ball the kicking too was praise worthy the kickoffs executed by jack levitz were as good as any seen on taylor field last fall even the punting was improved elliott's boots showed a likeness to those of his mentor chuck hess and what was more he was consistent har ris did not do as well in the second half in that he could not control the direction of the slippery pig skin davidowitz makes first score hindered considerably by a wet ball during the first part of the game which consisted mainly of an exchange of punts the brown and white offense swung into action at the start of the second quarter lee right halfback for st john's threw a pass into cowboy elliott's arms davidowitz was unable to get started on the first play and cow hoy elliott stood ready to punt sam hall was slow in snapping the continued on page three roberts receives 400 scholarship fourteen hundred and seventy seven students had enrolled at the close of the registration period at 5 p m monday of this total 405 are wearing black ties and dinks 396 are sophomores 302 juniors 272 engineering increased 9 the decreased enrollment by col leges for new students ' arts decreased 6 business decreased 1 * engineering decreased 5 the total decrease in new stu dents is 22 this decrease is due to more severe entrance require ments and a more strict enforce ment of these requirements the new students admitted with advanced standing this year num ber 39 as against 42 in 1927 60 in 1926 88 in 1925 64 in 1924 and 33 in 1923 this falling off during the past two years is undoubtedly due to the university policy of not ad mitting students who have flunk ed out of other institutions the new students represent 20 states and five foreign countries as against 23 states and territories and four foreign countries in 1927 there are 24 fewer men from the territory outside pennsylvania new york and new jersey than last year the following table shows the geographical distribution of new students with comparative figures for 1927 and 1928 states 1927 1928 pa n y and n j 389 390 other been secured by the commit tee in charge of arrangements austy tate captain hyde and fred trafford will make short ad dresses and by a special arrange ment with the globe theatre an exceptionally good entertainment will be offered the usual eats drinks and smokes will be pro vided the following changes were act ed upon at a regular meeting of the faculty monday afternoon in the physics lecture room 1 a new cut-probation rule was approved 2 slight changes were made in the cross country and freshman football schedules 3 new members were elected to faculty committees to replace those members absent on leave 4 the number of subjects accept able for admission was increased the new cut-probation rule which was adopted is as follows a student who persistently ab sents himself from any course shall be warned by the dean the warn ing given will ordinarily specify very narrow cut limit within which the student must keep for the re mainder of the semester if the student then oversteps this limit he shall be dropped from the univer sity forthwith a student dropped under this rule may apply to the committee on standing of students for read mission at the beginning of any subsequent semester every such application shall be considered by the committee on its individual merits a varsity cross country meet with new york university on october 13 was approved and a cross coun try meet between lehigh and la fayette freshmen was authorized although no date was set if the coaches so desire the freshman football team instead of the junior varsity has been authorized to play allentown prep professor a a diefenderfer was elected to succeed professor h v anderson on the committee on ad missions and professor bradley stoughton was elected to succeed professor t e butterfield on the committee on honorary degrees professors anderson and butter field are absent on leave the faculty approved that the list of subjects acceptable for ad mission as elective subjects page 26 of the register for 1927-28 be extended by the addition of the following english 4th unit french 4th unit german 4th unit spanish 4th unit physics 2nd unit chemistry 2nd unit biology 2nd unit business law or 1 unit inter algebra or 1 unit the faculty also approved that the following subjects be segregat ed from the general list of elec tive subjects as a supplementary list from which not more than two units may be accepted physiology and hygiene % or 1 unit manual training or 1 unit freehand drawing % unit mechanical drawing % unit bookkeeping stenography and typewriting 1 or 2 units the reason for this change is that many high schools and prep schools require that a student take four years of one of these subjects for graduation but formerly the student was allowed to offer only three of these credits as entrance credits the climatic laws of nature ap parently follow certain courses of fered at lehigh according to the view held by senior chemicals tak ing the course in engineering lab oratory those who took this course during the hot months of the summer found their work confined to testing boilers and engines but now that cooler weather has come the first plant to be inspected is the refrigeration plant of the lehigh and new england terminal ware house in west bethlehem one of the most interesting tests run this summer was that of the gas producer in the wilbur lab which had not been in operation for over fifteen years the fact that the pro ducer exploded but five times dur ing the entire test is indicative of its success an excursion was also made to the coke works of the bethlehem steel plant and tests were run on the huge steam engines whic hoperate the exhaust fans for the coke ovens other plants vis ited and tested were the lucken bach flour mill the power plant of st luke's hospital and an old brewery the trip to the brewery was a mere inspection however while the power plant of the hospi tal was so distant from all the oth er buildings of the hospital except the isolation ward that everyone at tended to their work the junior class will give a tea dance saturday oct 6 in drown hall after the p m c game from 4to 7 p m music will be furnished by dave fluharty's or chestra dcx bullard junior class presi dent in speaking of the coming dance said we want this dance to be a success every member of the junior class should attend and do his best to bring his friends journalism classes visit news plant diversified interests occupy seven here as research fellows phi club will elect new men next monday the trip was under the supervi sion of dr b l miller of the ge ology department and professor howard eckfeldt of the mining de partment the sophomore smoker heldjsst evening in drown hall which*was planned in order to arouse class spirit for the founder's day sports failed to draw a good percentage of the class the few that were there however were aroused to enthus iasm by the exhortations of fred trafford and president lyons it was requested that all sopho mores cooperate to insure a more strict enforcement of freshman reg ulations that is now apparent — de feat of the frosh tomorrow being emphasized as one of the best ways to establish class superiority and stricter jurisdiction phi club held the initial meeting of the year at the theta delta chi house last evening the chief rea son for the meeting was to summar ize the names of members of the class of 1931 who are eligible for membership in the club eligibility in the club to be based as usual on athletic ability displayed last year in freshman sports the voting will take place next monday night at a meeting to be held at the sigma nu house what actually happens in the production of a city newspaper was vividly demonstrated to classes in reporting and writing and news editing when they made a trip through the bethlehem globe times plant last friday afternoon the trip was led by curtis d mac dougall assistant professor of journalism all departments of the globe-times plant were visited and the employees questioned freely the students greatly appreciated the willingness with which the globe-times staff answered their many questions and especially the time given them by harold b far quhar editor who's who includes other lehigh men the list published in the last issue of the brown and white of lehigh faculty members whose names appear in the cur rent issue of who's who was incomplete the following men are also listed in who's who benjamin leroy miller ph.d head of the department of geol ogy tomlinson fort ph.d head of the department of
