the decision of the faculty engineering committee will in no way be governed by any fixed rules or regulations all phases of each individual record will be considered before a rec ommendation is made students will receive statements of their standing as soon as recom mendations are completed the examinations will be giv en june 5 to 7 lists will be posted giving building and room assignments for the exams the sophomore comprehensive examination for engineers will only be one of four factors used in determining whether or not students now taking engineering can continue to do so in their junior year these factors are all grades already acquired ap titude rating for two years rat ing in freshman psychological exam and the rating acquired in the coming comprehensive exam a complete record of every students standing will be given to the faculty engineering coun cil which consists of the heads of the various engineering de partments by the dean the relative rating of marks in the comprehensives will be used the engineering council will consider the case of each stu dent separately and make one of the three following recom mendations to the faculty com mittee on the standing of elects officers for next year another valuable gift an electric butt welding machine valued at 2000 has been re ceived by the welding labora tory it comes from the fed erated machine and welding co largely as the result of the welding symposium held re cently on the campus which revealed to industrial men the utility of undergraduate instruc tion on the theory and practice of welding the machine itself is the lat est type embodying all he new principles of pressure butt welding it was given specifi cally for use in research work to be undertaken by the metal lurgy department and for ex hibition at future welding sym posiums the gift is the fifth of its kind to the welding laboratory since its establishment the actual theory of the machine is simple the parts to be welded are pressed together tightly and a heavy current is sent through the joint about 2000 amperes at 10 volts the high resistance of the joint generates all intense heat so that the two pieces un der pressure weld together giv ing a smooth clean joint for welding of small sections up to 1 1-4 inches in diameter the ma chine has no rival the general electric co has offered the university an atomic hydrogen welder worth 1200 at half price if this machine is acquired the laboratory will be equipped to do every standard type of welding which will be a great convenience at the next symposium the university of maryland lacrosse team defeated that of lehigh on wednesday at college park md by a score of 15 to 2 the maryland team is un defeated as yet and is the strongest contender for the hon or of being america's represen tative team to take part in the coming olympics it will un doubtedly be either this twelve or the mount washington team that will engage in the interna tional contests although the score is over whelming it is not a true pic ture of the game for almost thirty minutes the brown and white twelve played the home team to a standstill but there came a break in the latter part of each of the halves it may have been due to the fact that lehigh slumped or it may have been that maryland found it self and gradually came into its own at any rate the result was disastrous during the first quarter both teams were dead locked with one goal each in the last ten minutes of the first half the southerners scored seven goals they accomplished the well-nigh impossible by scor ing three of them within less than a minute's length of time the second half was a repeti tion of the first for the first eighteen minutes of this period again were both teams dead locked with but one goal to their credit then came the break in the last ten minutes the h<jme team annexed five goals lehigh was in the lead for the continued on page four survey camps will begin june fourth exhibition of art attracts admirers harper and brothers have re cently announced that profes sor herbert maynard diamond's new book religion and the commonweal will be ready for distribution on or about june 1 the book deals with the social value of religion and is built largely on ethnographic mater ial the first part concerning the origins and nature of reli gion among uncivilized groups and the second the social costs of religion including economic waste interference with indus trial progress etc the third part develops the positive func tion of religion as an agency of social control demonstrating that it is the basis of the de velopment of human rights to life and private property professor becker to direct engineering courses this summer pressionistic works more than 1300 view im scabbard and blade elects new officers the lehigh baseball team crashed through for another well-earned victory wednesday afternoon in taylor stadium when they defeated a veteran swarthmore nine by a 7-3 score pat o'leary's home run and mort strauss triple in the third gave lehigh a lead which was not questioned during the rest of the game due to strauss usual excel lent pitching and some fast field work on the part of swarth more the first inning ended scoreless porky flynn brought john bramble in for the first run in the second and fenceo'leary hit a long one along the bleachers for a hom er in the third strauss tripled on a liner that was too low to clear the fence and then came in on elmer talbert's long sac rifice fly to center field from then on there was lit tle doubt as to the outcome of the game the infield made some beautiful stops the most brilliant of which was on a fast hit over second by max schultz dick stone bolstered the out field and prevented a sure gar net run in the fifth when he made a long peg from deep left to stop a man coming to third lehigh piled up four more runs in the fifth and sixth and in spite of its best efforts swarthmore was held down to a meagre three runs the visitors touched strauss for one more hit than their hur ler burton yielded^and lehigh committed more errors than swarthmore but strauss abil ity to keep the hits well scat tered and the numerous and well-bunched extra base pokes of his teammates decided the contest strauss bramble and flynn each hit safely twice and johnson and redman led the garnet will-wielders box score — lehigh schoen ist lieutenant lyman nasoir 2nd lieutenant edward b{'.ker ist sergeant andrew henry officers for the coming year were elected at a meeting of the mechanical engineering so ciety held wednesday night may 16 in williams hall those elected were : c e webbe pres ident p h tucker vice-pres ident ; j t marshall secretary ; d l wright treasurer student papers were present ed by a j sweitzer m e 28 on lubrication and lubricants and by r c barber i e 30 on alaska mr sweitzer spoke briefly of some of the experi ments made to determine the ac tion of a lubricant in bearings he went on to tell of the diffi culties encountered in properly lubricating a bearing under the various conditions mr barber was well qualified to speak of alaska as his home is in ketchikan alaska he spoke chiefly of the southern section of alaska and corrected false impressions held by many people the territory he de scribed covers an area of 60,000 square miles and has a popula tion of 60,000 people the chief industries of this section are fishing mining and canning fish the largest canning fac tories are located in ketchikan a town of 6,000 inhabitants mostly employed by the can neries refreshments were served in the basement after the meeting was adjourned pi delta epsilon inducts eleven men earnest j cresswell was elected treasurer and r e im hof cabinet member as a re sult of the freshman class elec tions tuesday these men were elected a week later than other officers as a result of tie in the first elections the 1929 lehigh-lafayette baseball series hinges on the re sult of tomorrow's ball game in taylor stadium coach bob adams will field a much-im proved nine one which in the last week has accomplished something it has taken all sea son to do — win two consecutive games furthermore the vic tory over lafayette last satur day at easton raised the mor ale of the players so that home fans should anticipate a real ex hibition adams will almost certainly send charlie brady to the mound for the deciding cc.itest it was brady who held the leo pards at bay last week he who defeated murburg lafayette's sophomore pitching ace the conqueror of the great n y u outfit experience has taught adams that lafayette's left hand batters like the offerings of the diminutive mort strauss who has already pitched once this week and has also con firmed that a southpaw is not so much to their taste the ad dition of strauss who is ex ceptionally consitent hitter for a hurler to the outfield in the event that brady assumes the responsibility will materially strengthen the team dick stone and kelly proebstle who were important factors in last week's victory will almost surely complete the outer garden trio the infield combination of elmer talbert max schultz pat o'leary and johnny bramble which has fielded so well in the two recent victories will be kept intact porky flynn a letterman and regular backstop will catch just who coach coughlin will elect to pitch is doubtful it is quite safe to assume that the lafayette mentor will not use murburg however for the brown and white batters seem to have his number probably hibbard who relieved murburg in the first series game will start although lafayette has another good pitcher in the vet eran morrison the supporting cast led by captain koch bril liant shortstop whose fielding was the sensation of the game here two weeks ago will be the same lafayette won its only game this week by beating the new york a.c 7-1 wednesday whether lehigh regains the upper hand over her arch rival which was hers during the 1925 and 1926 seasons depends on the result of this rubber game last year the generals won the first two games handily but were defeated by jing john son's charges in the third tilt in a close and well-played ball game before an ilumni crowd 4-2 tomorrow's game is the last before final exams begin to claim attention the team con cludes the season with two home games with muhlenberg and villanova june 8 and 9 grad uation week-end junior cheerleaders the following men were elect ed junior cheerleaders for the coming year robert herbuck reed laird robert lincoln william powell and george turn vaughn haag and lyle jones milton's first english poem a bibliographical prob lem appeared in the book re view section of the new york times sunday the review states that the pamphlet comes forward with an original the ory to disturb the established order of things respecting the second folios of shakespeare it continues it is obvious that dr smith went over the title pages that came under his scrutiny with a fine comb the brochure is generously illustrat ed with photostats which show clearly the differences in the nine title pages described professor smith recently re urned from washington where he examined a first folio of shakespeare in connection with his research on this subject professor smith was the guest of the head librarian of the library of congress while in washington and also attended the luncheon french impressionists in the faculty room alumni mem orial building which closed at 9 p m saturday may 12 the attendance was large dur ing the last two days because of the number of bach festival visitors who viewed the exhib it more interest was shown by the students than was evidenced in any previous exhibition it is estimated that about 1000 visitors were lehigh students a number of seniors who stu died the pictures commented on the fact that the knowledge thus gained enabled them to answer several questions in the carne gie achievement tests which were given the first part of this week the pictures will be re turned monday to their owner durand-ruel of new york by whose courtesy the exhibit was made possible this exhibition is the fourth of a series which was started in 1924 the first which was of contemporary american artists was attended by only about 600 people but the number has in creased for each succeeding showing those in charge of se curing these exhibits for the university are greatly pleased by this increased interest and feel that the growth of appre ciation should encourage an ex pansion of the program of art exhibitions brown and white lehigh university
