unanimous in demand for reform in politics musical clubs give final performance a large concrete arch con structed by the senior concrete class under the direction of r j fogg head of the depart ment of civil engineering was tested last saturday in the 800,000 pound riehle vertical screw testing machine in the fritz laboratory the construction of the arch was unique in that it was hol low it was designed by prof fogg a force of 246,000 pounds was required to break the arch although it started to crack at 180,000 pounds this was well within the calculated limits and according to prof fogg the test proved very satisfactory class of 1930 elects officers for next year home concert tomorrow in drown hall will end season juniors and seniors will as semble on taylor field to parti cipate in moving-up day cere monies as soon as the first half of the lacrosse game is over to morrow afternoon the graduating class will form a single line facing tow ard the west opposite them and facing toward the east will be a similar line of juniors in the absence of w b billmeyer jr president of the class of 1928 vice-president e w mcgov ern will begin the ceremony by handing the engraved class cane to l c crewe president-elect of the class of 1929 upon the presentation of this class cane the column of seniors will sur render their canes to the jun iors opposite them when the last half of the la crosse game is finished the sophomores will take the field and arrange themselves in a double column the length of the field at the eastern end of taylor field a bonfire provided by the freshmen will be blazing the class of 1931 still wearing the fragments that remain of their dinks their black socks and ties will pass between the two lines of sophomores toward the bonfire once it is reached dinks and ties will be fed to the flames and freshman regula tions will be forgotten athletes of twenty-four high schools from the entire eastern section of the state will com pete for track treasurer a most im portant change was made the name of the society is now the r w hall pre-medical so ciety in honor of its founder prof hall jack longacre re tiring president of the society was presented with a very beau tiful and useful gift — a foun tain pen in appreciation of his hard and faithful work on be half of the society the speaker of the evening was dr walker chief surgeon of st luke's hospital dr walker's talk was especially in teresting to the senior pre-meds since it mostly concerned the choosing of medical school and hospital and in general how a student should prepare for individuals and companies the judges will be major tucker captain munthy and lieutenant gallagher of lafayette and captains sand ers and atwood of the national guard the program of events 1 00 p m tire unit 4:00 p m presentation of awards and colors 4:10 p m review burr competition on the combined musical clubs are planning several new fea tures for their annual home concert and dance tomorrow night in drown hall both the symphony orchestra and the glee club have worked up some new music written by some of the greatest composers as this is the final concert it is ex pected to surpass any other giv en by the clubs the program will have an attractive and ap propriate design and the de scription and interpretation of the music played will be given so that the audience can under stand the theme and get the feeling of the composer the concert which will last about an hour and a half will be followed by dancing for the remainder of the evening tick ets are on sale by the members at one dollar apiece the clubs have taken some very extensive trips this year early in the terjn they made a four day tour of northern new jersey and new york broad casting over the radio from new york city during march they gave concerts in patterson n j and at the moravian col lege for women ; and the last out-of-town concert was last wee kat cedar crest college that these concerts have been well received is evidenced from the letters which have been re ceived commending the clubs on the quality of their perfor mance a tea dance will be given sat urday afternoon may 19 in drown hall the tunnels will give an illustrated lecture on the con struction and operation of these tunnels much of the testing of the steel tunnel segments for the holland tunnels was done at lehigh university in the fritz laboratory of the department of civil engineering a small model and a large number of il lustrative photographs of the tunnel are on display at the fritz laboratory freshmen will vote again for the arcadia which is now conducting class elections showed that e j cresswell and f a rushong were tied for the office of historian and s h condit and r e imhof had an equal number of votes for cabinet office first session of 22nd an ual festival held this afternoon before a throng of 1200 that completely filled the packer memorial chapel the first ses sion of the 22nd annual bach festival was held at 4 o'clock this afternoon at the public rehearsal on thursday the con cert was equally well received the choir singing before a sold out house that was made up of patrons from all sections of this part of the country the choir sang the cantata shout for joy ye ransomed of the lord as translated espe cially for the occasion by the late dr alfred g langley of boston a concerto for two pi anos played by miss ruth betk er of bethlehem and earle la ros of easton and three chor ajes concluded the afternoon session a stronghold sure our god remains the words of which are ascribed to martin luther and the magnificat will be the program for this evening tomorrow's session of the festival will consist of the an nual rendition of the mass in b minor bach's greatest work the solo part of which will be sung by the various sections of the choir this year the orches tration of this work will be played according to bach's orig inal score by members of the new york symphony orches tra the oboe used in this score is known as the oboe d'amoure since the time of bach how ever musicians have discarded this instrument in favor of the modern oboe of lower pitch a slight change has also been made in the score for the trum pets which was previously too high in the early years dr wolfe was forced to re write fihe orchestration for these in struments which arrangement has been followed until this year when dr wolfe was able to secure a man who could play the oboe d'amoure as well as a player who can execute the higher trumpet notes the organ accompaniment will be played by t edgar shields chapel organist while the moravian trombone choir will play chorales before each session the phi club cup awarded each year to a freshman for ex cellence in athletics scholarship and character was presented to robert harris at the college meeting today harris who has already won numerals in football and basket ball is captain of the frosh baseball team and has been elected class secretary for next year he played football base ball and basketball at lower merion high school where he graduated last year the cup which harris receiv ed is awarded annually by phi club sophomore honorary so ciety for excellence in athlet ics scholarship and character the purpose of the club is to encourage student - athletes men who can go out for sports and still stand high in their studies twenty freshmen are busily engaged soliciting subscriptions in an effort to become members of the burr business board in the competition which started april 29 although the compe tition is gathering momentum the greatest work will come next fall with an intensive sub scription campaign the best workers will be elected to the board during the second semes ter next year country star tripped over him self as sames overtook him on the straightaway the accident but one of three that spoiled the competition put a surprising end to what had developed into an interesting duel and to what had promised an exciting fin ish wyn hand was the victim of another tough break in the low hurdles hand led over the en tire route but was thrown as he shaved the final obstacle too closely and could not recover himself in time to place zehr er maroon pole valuter who has placefl first in his specialty against lehigh ever since he has been vaulting for his alma mater had to be satisfied with a tie with bill pickslay when his pole snapped under him on his third unsuccessful attempt he fell 10 feet 6 inches on his neck but was not thought ser iously injured dunkle won the high jump for the visitors and humma took the honors in the mile af ter setting a terrific pace for the first half of the journey and then just having enough left to withstand al fine's strong bid at the finish rambo with 14 points led his teammates and johnston another field man placed in three events and tal lied seven points after tying for first in the pole vault and placing third in the high jump art greene for mer plattsburg high star took third in the broad jump the last event on the program and scor ed the single point which pre vented lehigh from being de feated in the yearling meet mort lamb frosh speed mer chant won the century and fur long in good time and was the only double-winner among the freshmen hartman lafayette sprinter and broad jumper out scored lamb by one point how ever and won the individual honors al mcelroy and jim fritts also placed in more than one event each winning one the other lehigh freshman victors included fran neuwirth carl lohmeyer ferdy friedrich manny haas and felix shay who broke the university jave lin record in practice last week the latter's winning throw in the javelein exceeded the best and varsity man could do fried rich out jumped the upperclass men tire unit 4:00 p m presentation of awards and colors 4:10 p m review burr competition on the combined musical clubs are planning several new fea tures for their annual home concert and dance tomorrow night in drown hall both the symphony orchestra and the glee club have worked up some new music written by some of the greatest composers as this is the final concert it is ex pected to surpass any other giv en by the clubs the program will have an attractive and ap propriate design and the de scription and interpretation of the music played will be given so that the audience can under stand the theme and get the feeling of the composer the concert which will last about an hour and a half will be followed by dancing for the remainder of the evening tick ets are on sale by the members at one dollar apiece the clubs have taken some very extensive trips this year early in the terjn they made a four day tour of northern new jersey and new york broad casting over the radio from new york city during march they gave concerts in patterson n j and at the moravian col lege for women ; and the last out-of-town concert was last wee kat cedar crest college that these concerts have been well received is evidenced from the letters which have been re ceived commending the clubs on the quality of their perfor mance a tea dance will be given sat urday afternoon may 19 in drown hall the regular 13 piece dance orchestra under the direction of dave fluharty will furnish the music for the dancing this will be the last dance before final examinations the program of the concert is as lehigh valley sec tion of the american society of civil engineers at pardee hall lafayette college easton pa at 7 30 p m monday may 14 major c s gliem construc tion engineer for the holland vehicular tunnels will give an illustrated lecture on the con struction and operation of these tunnels much of the testing of the steel tunnel segments for the holland tunnels was done at lehigh university in the fritz laboratory of the department of civil engineering a small model and a large number of il lustrative photographs of the tunnel are on display at the fritz laboratory freshmen will vote again next tuesday may 15 from 8 a m until 3 p m in fred trafford's office drown hall to elect a historian and a cabinet jnember because of ties in the recent elections a recount of votes by fred trafford for the arcadia which is now conducting class elections showed that e j cresswell and f a rushong were tied for the office of historian and s h condit and r e imhof had an equal number of votes for cabinet office first session of 22nd an ual festival held this afternoon before a throng of 1200 that completely filled the packer memorial chapel the first ses sion of the 22nd annual bach festival was held at 4 o'clock this afternoon at the public rehearsal on thursday the con cert was equally well received the choir singing before a sold out house that was made up of patrons from all sections of this part of the country the choir sang the cantata shout for joy ye ransomed of the lord as translated espe cially for the occasion by the late dr alfred g langley of boston a concerto for two pi anos played by miss ruth betk er of bethlehem and earle la ros of easton and three chor ajes concluded the afternoon session a stronghold sure our god remains the words of which are ascribed to martin luther and the magnificat will be the program for this evening tomorrow's session of the festival will consist of the an nual rendition of the mass in b minor bach's greatest work the solo part of which will be sung by the various sections of the choir this year the orches tration of this work will be played according to bach's orig inal score by members of the new york symphony orches tra the oboe used in this score is known as the oboe d'amoure since the time of bach how ever musicians have discarded this instrument in favor of the modern oboe of lower pitch a slight change has also been made in the score for the trum pets which was previously too high in the early years dr wolfe was forced to re write fihe orchestration for these in struments which arrangement has been followed until this year when dr wolfe was able to secure a man who could play the oboe d'amoure as well as a player who can execute the higher trumpet notes the organ accompaniment will be played by t edgar shields chapel organist while the moravian trombone choir will play chorales before each session the phi club cup awarded each year to a freshman for ex cellence in athletics scholarship and character was presented to robert harris at the college meeting today harris who has already won numerals in football and basket ball is captain of the frosh baseball team and has been elected class secretary for next year he played football base ball and basketball at lower merion high school where he graduated last year the cup which harris receiv ed is awarded annually by phi club sophomore honorary so ciety for excellence in athlet ics scholarship and character the purpose of the club is to encourage student - athletes men who can go out for sports and still stand high in their studies twenty freshmen are busily engaged soliciting subscriptions in an effort to become members of the burr business board in the competition which started april 29 although the compe tition is gathering momentum the greatest work will come next fall with an intensive sub scription campaign the best workers will be elected to the board during the second semes ter next year country star tripped over him self as sames overtook him on the straightaway the accident but one of three that spoiled the competition put a surprising end to what had developed into an interesting duel and to what had promised an exciting fin ish wyn hand was the victim of another tough break in the low hurdles hand led over the en tire route but was thrown as he shaved the final obstacle too closely and could not recover himself in time to place zehr er maroon pole valuter who has placefl first in his specialty against lehigh ever since he has been vaulting for his alma mater had to be satisfied with a tie with bill pickslay when his pole snapped under him on his third unsuccessful attempt he fell 10 feet 6 inches on his neck but was not thought ser iously injured dunkle won the high jump for the visitors and humma took the honors in the mile af ter setting a terrific pace for the first half of the journey and then just having enough left to withstand al fine's strong bid at the finish rambo with 14 points led his teammates and johnston another field man placed in three events and tal lied seven points after tying for first in the pole vault and placing third in the high jump art greene for mer plattsburg high star took third in the broad jump the last event on the program and scor ed the single point which pre vented lehigh from being de feated in the yearling meet mort lamb frosh speed mer chant won the century and fur long in good time and was the only double-winner among the freshmen hartman lafayette sprinter and broad jumper out scored lamb by one point how ever and won the individual honors al mcelroy and jim fritts also placed in more than one event each winning one the other lehigh freshman victors included fran neuwirth carl lohmeyer ferdy friedrich manny haas and felix shay who broke the university jave lin record in practice last week the latter's winning throw in the javelein exceeded the best and varsity man could do fried rich out jumped the upperclass men
