pi delta epsilon pledges new men scabbard and blade tea dance opens week-end of dance and sport activities by garth a howland last day of conference spent in bethlehem may 11 formal initiation set for officers elected the three-day conference of the lehigh valley industries as sociation was concluded today after a thorough inspection of grounds and buildings of le high university and of the bethlehem steel plant the conference began at eas ton april 25 delegates con sisting of engineers architects builders and others interested in construction work attended the delegates during their three-day stay were shown the operations of cement slate and steel industries and the rela tions of these materials to con struction work several lehigh men including dr c r rich ards professors m o miller h eckfeldt and r j fogg took part in the conference edward y lindsay instruc tor in latin has resigned from lehigh's teaching staff to ac cept a position at the univer sity of vermont his position will be filled by adolph f pauli assistant professor of latin who formerly taught at the university of illinois and at dartmouth college the mathematics department will be enlarged by the addition of three new instructors ; hugh s stanley graduate assistant in mathematics from the uni versity of georgia hallett b hammatt instructor in mathe matics from the university of california and carl a keeler instructor in mathematics from the university of california two new instructors will join the english department erne is henry schenk who is a grad uate of cornell university and the elections of the senior class officers for the class of 29 which were held yesterday afternoon resulted as follows president vice-president secretary treasurer marshal historian if one were to mention the name howard reiter to any lehigh student or graduate there would undoubtedly be quite some mental confusion apparent but with the casual addition of bosey to the howard roland the faces of all would light up and with little or no hesitation the answer would be sure i know bosey and thus it is everywhere mr reiter is bosey on the campus in collegiate circles in the sporting world in business and in his educational work having worked for and with him for two years i won dered myself and was often questioned by others as to just how such a name came to be given to mr reiter in dictation he always specified bosey and rarely signed his letters as h r reiter it was during some of his dictation one day that i finally asked him about the origin of his nickname and was quite pleased to have him tell me what little he could re member about when he was first called bosey mr reiter was a student at princeton for four years and graduated from that school in the late nineties he was star on his freshman football team and before he graduated he was named on walter camp's all-american backfield his skill in football and other sports coupled with his ex tremely congenial nature brought him much popularity he was soon known to almost every fellow on the campus and his ever increasing popularity brought him more and more friends he had not acquired a faculty for remembering names and for lack of something better to say when he was spoken to by almost everyone he met he addressed everyone with hello boy and say boys this was soon overworked and he started to say hello bo and say boss partly from habit but more so from contraction his closer friends soon noticed the change and with its increasing use he was soon called bo and bose r especially by the members of his football team who used the expression more to kid him about his way of saying boys rather than to give him a nickname as he grew more and more popular and his friends increased so the use of bose increased soon he was known to all as bose and this gradually took the form used today mr reiter reluctantly admitted that his recollections of the origin of his nickname were somewhat vague and this was as much as he could remember j his fame and popularity have increased since he was first called bosey but the name still sticks with him he likes it uses it himself and would much rather have others use it a nickname brings familiarity he says and there is noth ing i like more than student companionship the use of bosey is indicative of his character lehigh netsters down maroon on the campus yesterday morning the razz sheet which formerly appeared at this season of the year under the auspices of pi delta eplison has been discon tinued in favor of the new pic torial when negotiations were made for the publication of the lehigh pictorial it was believed that the demand would not ex ceed the 12,500 copies for which the order was placed the cir culation of last year's razz sheet was 1200 copies extra ordinary demand practically ex hausted the copies that were placed on sale yesterday morn ing junior elections held yesterday junior class elections yester day resulted in the following men for officers : l c crewe president c e webbe vice-president e c quinlan secretary j g conrath treasurer r r hertzler historian w e miller sergeant-at-arms l c crewe and r r hertz ler are the only men who were re-elected to head next year's seniors brown and white lacrosse team meets princeton here tomorrow will be best sport event on house party program today has been marked in red on the undergraduate cal endar at lehigh it is the day of the beginning of that heart stimulating function spring house party it is today that marks the beginning of a re lease from the daily grind and the influx of feminine pulchri tude to the campus scabbard and blade the hon orary military fraternity has the honor of opening the house party with a tea dance in drown hall this tea dance is sched uled between the hours of four and seven on friday afternoon the scintillating intonations of jazz which will permeate the most extreme corner of drown hall will be the signal for the opening of the long waited ev ent of spring house party at nine o'clock friday eve ning phil napoleon will strike up the opening number for the junior prom with the class of 1929 to direct the social af fair of the year expectancy runs high for an unprecedented func tion from the opening strains of the first number to the very last note of home sweet home the committee in charge of the prom has arranged for dec orations which are entirely dif ferent from any ever before used at lehigh the scheme calls for lining the walls of the gym in such a way as to remove all traces of the hint of athletic contests the favors while not a new idea are clever and have on one or two other occasions elicited superlatively favorable comment from the feminine ele ment saturday will differ from any other saturday of the year the industrious ambitious and con scientious will hie themselves to their classes cursing the no cut rule in the afternoon there will be three athletic ev ents to choose from for enter tainment the varsity tennis team will play n y u at le high field and the varsity base ball team will play haverford at lehigh field the only spring sport teams which will not be in action at home will be the track teams which are both scheduled to run in the perm relays at philadelphia , after the games the blare of trumpets the blatant note of the saxophone and the whine of fiddles will again be heard at the gym this time for the first in the history of lehigh there will be a free dance on the campus the interfraternity council is playing host to the participants of house party at a tea dance the magnanimity of the council will be greatly appreciated by everyone and particularly by those who have had to pawn every available ar ticle of clothing and every stray piece of jewelry to make the grade for house party continued on page two saturday evening will be de voted to round robin dances at various fraternity houses on the campus and in town the purpose of 9-0 julius seligson lehigh's dim inutive intercollegiate indoor champion continued his run of victories by downing went first man of the maroon in straight sets 6-1 6-1 the lafayette netsters succeeded in winning only two sets during the after noon ross of lafayette took a set from ed epstein and ross and captain long contriv ed to win a close set from ep stein and wally usher captain al trumbull had little difficulty in defeating ramsey 6-3 6-0 coach carothers substituted ray sweitzer and hal eschen lauer as the last doubles com bination when the match was sewed up this pair requited themselves by winning from colvin and hoyt 7-5 6-4 wednesday's match was the first scheduled meet completed rain prevented the opening contest with rutgers and inter cepted that with haverford last saturday seligson's match was the only one finished he de feated captain evans 6-2 6-3 in his dual meet debut the match listed with colum bia for tuesday was called off because of adverse weather of the city on wednesday april 25 1,366 was turned into the chest by professor bradley stough ton who is the captain of the lehigh university community chest team this year wit nessed a 37 per cent st luke's hospital which gives the students service at a price which would not be at all pos sible except for the large con tributions which the hospital re ceives from the chest every year and which comes from the whole body of citizens the other agencies supported by the chest eight in number give protection against disease pov erty and even crime to a scientist the discoveries of another are always interest ing even though the field of ef fort is quite distinct from his own the fact that another man through research has found a new principle or has been able to give new scope to old truths arouses a feeling of fellowship artists have long realized the dependence of their work upon science the scientists however have not always recognized the scientific aspects of art the chemistry of paint is of funda mental importance to a painter — what pigments are perman ent which will fade after a century what methods of ap plying paint will give a smooth surface what will cause crack ing and scaling the physical properties of light have strongly attracted the inquiry artist particularly was this true of the french im pressionists the first painter to apply the physicist's knowl edge of light to pigment was monet feeling that artists were not obtaining the true light ef fects of nature he began on the premise that as the prism breaks up a ray of light into its com ponent parts — red yellow blue and where these overlap orange green violet so then one could only resecure light by recombin ing these colors in their purity there is no light in paint it self — how then can one secure a sense of light in his paintings ? to mix colors on a palette — as was the traditional practice — grayish tones resulted which gave exactly the opposite effect to that desired — shadows rather than light monet saw there fore that by using pure colors — reds oranges yellows in small patches the eye of the specta tor would reconstruct them into a sensation of light — reversing as it were the work of the prism small daubs of pure col or applied to a canvas mixed by the eye gave startlingly new effects other artists began to experiment in monet's manner of creating light in his paint ings but monet remained the master — with his straw stacks in broad sunlight shadowy pools with flickering specks of sun on water and lillies the houses of parliament or rouen cathedral in early morning mist or under fitful moonlight even the paris train sheds filled with plumes of steam and smoking engines as the logical result of this method objects lose their out lines some critics complained of this as a sacrifice of form of the solidity of structure oth ers lauded the softening of edges the melting of objects into the surrounding air a cor ollary of this arose from the study
