lewis and lehr among seven new titleholders cornell places second eleven less than last year are enrolled for this term committee is making many plans for successful function sword and crescent is spon soring a tea dance to be held in drown hall from 4:00 to 7:00 o'clock saturday afternoon march 24 the committee com prising w s buck j w helm staedter and j r denise has completed extensive arrange ments which promise good mu sic and also attractive girls from bishopthorpe manor and moravian seminary the mu sic is to be furnished by an augmented lehigh six a com bination never before heard on the campus the announcement of this event makes this week-end a most attractive one socially the mustard and cheese show the creaking cjiair on fri day night the sword and cres cent tea dance on saturday aft ernoon and the miami triad in vitational dance on saturday night constitute an imposing ar ray of attractions musical clubs to give concert there are 1603 undergradu ate students registered at le high this semester the slight decrease from the total of 1614 last year is probably due to the increased tuition and more sev ere entrance requirements of the total enrollment 394 are students in the college of arts and science 382 are bus iness students and 827 are reg istered in the various engineer ing departments the freshman class leads the list with a total of 623 soph omores 417 juniors 303 sen iors 253 there are also 62 graduate students 7 special students and there is one spe cial student enrolled only in saturday classes students in the 1927 summer school num bered 447 thia brings the to tal enrollment to 1740 l b stillwell 95 receives honors the class of 28 will hold their final banquet in the hotel bethlehem on thursday eve ning march 22 the banquets of preceeding years have been successful and it is the expressed desire of this year's committee to conclude the annual feasts in an ultra-enjoy able fashion the committee appointed to supervise affairs includes a w clinger chairman a w gee and s t becker it is their de sire to call to the attention of the seniors that this will be the last get-together and it is ex ceedingly important that all the members of the class attend the speakers selected for the occasion are president charles r richards dr neil carothers dr j s long and fred traf ford as has been the custom in previous years the class dues will be collected prior to the affair the amount is 4.50 ex clusive of the banquet fee and all class day expenses it should be distinctly understood that these fees must be paid whether the banquet it attended or not lab site cleared as trees are cut ogburn will speak to newtonian society capturing the last two sets with a sensational brand of tennis both from his back hand and at the net william aydel otte of new york surprised a huge gallery when he conquered julius seligson youthful inter collegiate indoor king 2-6 6-1 3-6 6-4 6-4 in the majority of five sets for the finals of the national indoor championship in new york saturday the win ner had previously won his en trance as a finalist when he trimmed fritz mercur in the semi-finals friday afternoon thihgs broke in favor of the lehigh entry when he won the opening set with ease 6-2 after taking the first four games aydelotte reversed the situa tion with a 6-1 victory in the next canto brilliant tennis came to the fore in the following games both players realizing the ten sity of the championship strug gle upon dropping the third set 3-6 the new yorker opened with a beautiful net game which his opponent failed to combat successfully this was inter spersed with many long base line duels from which aydelotte garnered numerous points although handisapped not a little by a turned ankle which he received in the opening of fourth term as chairman of the engineering foundation of am erica a research organization of national engineering societies mr stillwell graduated as an electrical engineer in 1885 he received an m a degree from lehigh and the honorary de gree doctor of science from wesleyan university in 1907 in 1914 lehigh also granted him a doctor of science degree in recognition of his achieve ments in engineering research excavation will start on packard building with in next month enthusiasm runs high at princeton the next concert of the com bined musical clubs will be given march 29 at the moravian college for women this reci tal will be given jointly with the moravian musical organiza tion a large audience is ex pected as both organizations have many followers in the community and a ordinary pap er close examination reveals the brush strokes of the orig inal artist . the reproductions which are on public exhibition during university hours are the cornfield by con stable the pond and one month after james ward packard's gift to lehigh the trees were cut on the site of the proposed build ing excavations will be start ed as soon as all the trees are felled which will be about april 1 approximately 40 trees in cluding about 12 of the larger ones will be cut down this work is being done by univer sity employees under the direc tion of j c cranmer oak bass wood maple and of the mustard and cheese club which will be given friday and saturday eve nings at the south side high school tickets are already on sale and are obtainable from either members of the club or at young's drug store the reserved seat tickets may be ex changed any time this week for tickets bearing the actual seat number the creaking chair writ ten by allene tupper wilkes and later revised by roland pertwee was first produced two years ago in new york and enjoyed a very successful run the play itself is of three act length and is of the mys tery-melodrama type baffling situations are worked in with well-arranged comedy to pro duce both an exciting and amusing show final choice of the cast was made last week after a double cast had been carried along with nighthly practice since the middle of february the mem bers of the show are now line perfect and the remainder of the week will be spent in smoothing up any rough spots which may develope part of the scenery was obtained from philadelphia and new york al though a great many of the props have been prepared by the stage managers of the club mr pfander instructor in the english department has charge of the coaching end and is well satisfied with the progress shown up until this year the mus tard and cheese club has offer ed musical comedies as their an nual feature last fall how ever the club presented four one-act plays which met with such wide-spread approval that they were requested to repeat the show it was not expedient to do so at that time but the three-act play instead of a mu sical comedy was the resulting choice of the club this spring the freshmen who took ele mentary chemistry and did not donate the balance of their laboratory fees to the student chemistry research fund can obtain the returns from their lab fees by calling at the bursar's office th i week that interest in wrestling at lehigh is keen was clearly il lustrated at the intercollegiate championships at princeton this week-end the student body enthusiastically optimistic backed billy sheridan's matmen strongly and at all three meet ings easily outnumbered the co horts of the other seven mem bers of the league the lehigh followers cheered incessantly for all their repre sentatives larry potter in the absence of cheerleaders showed fine lehigh spirit at the semi-finals when he took the initiative and led cheers for the brown and white team the fickleness of the lehigk supporters was exhibited in sev eral cases by very unsportsman like conduct the cheering for lehigh men was enthusiastic but poor sportsmanship was shown when palm lost on a close decision and when cornell men used their well-known hug it was all right how ever for a lehigh man to hold his opponent to the mat in the estimation of brown and white fans continued on page four the rev charles urban of perm had a stiff opponent in the preliminaries when he met agayoff of columbia a 150 pounder wrestling in the heavy weight division the blunt-barfield bout m the preliminaries was very close but after awarding the bout to barfield with 24 sec college lecture dr arthur j todd head of department of socoiology at northwestern university will deliver an address on science and civilization in packer memorial church on thursday at 4 p m two days of scintillating ac tion replete with thrills and upsets ended at princeton sat urday with two lehigh men as individual champions and with the brown and white flag fly ing at the peak of intercolle giate wrestling for the second time in two years a total of twenty points com piled as dick lewis and andy lehr fought through to titles in the 135 and 175 pound class es and eddie mcgovern mike palm and tubby miller were runners up in their divisions left cornell and perm state the closest contenders with 15 and 13 points each yale with 11 markers syracuse 7 prince ton 6 perm 2 and columbia 1 trailed in order seven new title-holders were crowned as neither of the two defending champions was able to duplicate last year's success okun of syracuse 115 pound king in 1927 was able to get only third position as josefson of cornell new champion and eddie mcgovern both showed superiority in winning first and second places capt burr miller of yale upon whose shoulders the crown of the 158 pound division has rested for the past two years met his nemesis in capt win graham of princeton in the most spectacular battle of the entire tournament graham as sumed the offensive and for al most half the bout miller's best efforts to dislodge him were fruitless pandemonium reign ed among the 2000 spectators as positions were suddenly re versed and graham rolling into a double arm lock was on the verge of being thrown only his super-strength and skill sav ed him as after a heart rend ing struggle he slipped free to finally win by a 3:34 time ad vantage dick lewis and sargent eli 135 pounder proved the best of their division and were match ed for the crown both men showed fast and clever jockey ing to stay on their feet for the first 12 minutes of the baf tle lewis then succeeded in one of his lightning-like lunges and managed to get an advan tageous position which in spite of sargent's best efforts he held for three minutes and le high's first title andy lehr was the next of billy sheridan's proteges to seek the crown in a battle-royal with johnson cornellian 175 pounder the regulation 15 minute period ended with lehr on the best end of a 21 second advantage — too small a margin for victory — and extra periods were declared necessary john son won the toss and assumed the defensive where andy was unable to hold him for more than a minute and a half and they regained their feet until the gong in the second period lehr went johnson one better by getting to his feet in about 50 seconds both tried desperately to gain a more decisive advan tage but the struggle ended with a referee's decision favor ing lehr one of the most disappoint ing upsets of the meet occurred when capt bill heilman was put out of the semi-finals fri day evening by roess of cor nell heilman predicted by many to have excellent chances for the 145
