seton hall noses out lehigh nine price five cents ball team's trip great success vol xxvii no 52 junior week makes many guests merry aviators fly at mineola today lehigh's four contestants com pete in large air tourna ment first league game at hoboken team partially crippled by men out strikebreaking first of lafayette series to be played on march field johnson probable pitcher northern nines fall in three defeats to lehigh twirlers and batsmen most successful social affair ever staged at lehigh leaves pleasant memories loose playing in first innings loses game for brown and white decisive scores score 5=4 west point colgate and wesleyan succumb to johnson's arm hard hitting feature of trip wilson star of whole game donovan and mathag figure well in fielding the junior week festivities which broke loose with the first notes of wright's saxaphone or chestra at the inter-fraternity dance monday night april 26 and remained at top notch until the singing of the alma mater at the end of the junior prom fri day morning april 30 were with out a doubt the best in the history of lehigh every event on the pro gram for the week was a grand suc cess and every committee in charge of any of the affairs is to be con gratulated drown hall was beautifully diecorated with gold white and blue bunting representing the sophomore and junior colors the chandeliers were deocrated in ferns and evergreens at one end of the floor played a small fountain sur rounded by palms and ferns at the other end a searchlight was ar ranged to represent the moon in the many moonlight dances dur ing these dances the spotlight w t as thrown here and there over the floor continuously changing color making a very beautiful spectacle the deeor-atloiin were airaiigcohrry the brown company thei first event on the program was the inter-fraternity dance held in drown hall wright's saxaphone orchestra furnished the continued on second page track team meets rutgers tomorrow tomorrow afternoon the lacrosse team plays the first league game of the season when they meet the team from stevens institute the game will be played on the latter s grounds in hoboken the team has been rounding in to shape well the last week or two and should open the league season with a victory with the large number of veterans on the team and the new material the brown and white will put up a hard fl ght for the southern division championship this year due to the absence of six of the regular players who are on strike duty on the railroads the line-up which will start against stevens will not be as strong as it would perhaps otherwise be the men who are absent are lewis straub lester wey gonzales and schu bert some of these may be able to get into the game however the team came out of the syra cuse game in good shape and all of the men are now in good condi tion enslin will be in again sat urday after bein out for some time with blood poisoning coach o'neill has been working the men hard this wreckw r eek to correct the faults which developed in the game with syracuse in this game the teamwork was poor in the first half and at intermission the score was tied only toward the end of the game w t as lehigh able to pull ahead continued on fourth page stevens presents a team which has had considerable success so far this season and which will prob ably furnish strong opposition of the three games which the new racket men win opener with moravian college the pilots selected to represent lehigh in the intercollegiate aero meet at mitchell field mineola l 1 on friday afternoon left bethle hem wednesday these men were selected according to the number of hours of flying they had to their credit during the war and consist of the following 100 mile cross country flight 2nd lieut s s richards and 2nd lieut w g nowell manoeuvering and acro batics altitude test obstacle test etc : ist lieut l h richards 2nd lieut h r mellinger all the men who will compete must be re serve pilots every college will have the opportunity of entering any number between two and six contestants lehigh has entered four con testants and the events will be run off according to the following schedule 1 altitude test 2 start of the 100-mile cross-country race around long island 3 take-off and landings 4 man oeuvering and stunts 5 alert competition 6 finish of the race this means that those men who are entered in the race which will be going on during the course of the other events will be unable to participate in any other compe tition with the exception of the altitude test the admission fee to the competition will be 25.00 for each college participating plus 10 for each contestant the type of plane used will be the jn-6 h's and the points will be counted as follows 5 for first place ; 3 for second place and 1 for third place the american flying club trophy which consists of a large cup will be granted yearly to the college club scoring the highest number of points in the en tire competition the aero club of massachusetts trophy will be granted to that club which wins the cross-country race the cleveland aviation club trophy will be given to that college scoring highest in the other four events gold silver and bronze medals will be given to the winners in each event all presentations will be made at a banquet to be given by the associa tion at the ritz-carlton tomorrow night the contests will have many ob stacles and will bring out the ability and skill of the pilots the take-off test will include circling and landing to the mark this includes a separate take-off by each contestant circling pylona within view of all spectators and landing to the mark the man euvering and acrobatics will be pulled off at an altitude above 1500 feet the alert competition will be in the form of an obstacle race ; the pilots having certain duties to perform before taking off and the first man who gets his wheels off the ground wins the lehigh baseball team by winning the only three games playedi on the northern trip brought its standing to five vic tories and one defeat during junior week manager gardy took his team on an extensive trip through the states of new york vermont new hampshire and connecticut and returned with three triumphs out of as many games on saturday april 24 lehigh met the strong west point nine and downed them 1 by the score of 8-6 the following mon day they encountered colgate at hamilton and johnson scored a very decisive victory by the score of 5-3 the contest with vermont on tuesday was halted by the rain in the fourth inning with the green mountain team leading by a hanover n h but the condition of the field prevented the conflict with dartmouth the final game of the trip was with wesleyan and lehigh romped off with the victory on the long end of a 4-2 score the three games played were featured by the hard hitting of the lehigh men and the splendid show ing of the pitchers a total of thirty hits were garnered by the brow t n and white batsmen in the three games driving in seventeen runs everybody seemed to be taking a crack at the old horse-hide and the opposing teams were kept busy chasing hard-hit balls the team hitting average for the three games was 290 which is no mean average especially for a travelling team the hitting honors were di vided among wilson yap savaria mathag and rote wilson and yap rapped out five safeties apiece while the other three divided up eleven hits continued on second page captain swede johnson was the mainstay in the box and inci dently won all three games in the opening game he held the army hitters to eight hits and fanned nine he showed better form in the colgate contest on monday when he held the maroon team to three hits in the first eight innings in the ninth he weakened how ever and four hits produced three runs he was relieved by pfeiffer with one out and dave finished the game without further scoring ' ' johnny lees was keady s selec tion for the mound in the vermont game but rain cut the contest short swede ended the series by holding the wesleyan aggrega tion to five hits while his team mates batted out a victory gym notice notice the baseball team opens the spring series with lafayette sat urday the first game being played on the latter s home grounds at easton following the successful new england trip of last week during which the team showed marked im provement prospects for a victory saturday are bright johnson's arm 1 is in good shape for the game as he has had over a week's layoff coach keady sent his second string pitchers against seton hall last wednesday especially in order to have johnson in shape for satur day the line-up which lehigh pre sents saturday will probably be the same as in the game last wed nesday with the exception of the pitchers wilson will do the re ceiving besides showing his early season ability as a receiver and throwing to bases his hitting has improved lately johnson will be in the box while the infield w t ill be the same as in preceding games s rote donovan and bock c?ii s-titute a fine defensive quartette covering lots of ground and play ing a steady game • savaria and mathag will occupy left and center fields respectively while sheedy will probably be in right this team is fast is good on defensive work while the offensive has a punch and with ordinary luck should return a winner saturday lafayette will probably show an improved team over last year a number of new players have been developed at the down river insti tution the infield will be fairly strong but the outfield somewhat inferior to lehigh s the pitching staff is said to be strong particu larly in southpaws the pitching selection is still in doubt but car ney who held perm state to four hits last week will probably start the game so far this year lafayette has had a fairly successful season after losing an early season game to pennsylvania by a 1-3 score princeton tufts and johns hop kins were defeated rain pre vented most of the games on the southern trip from being played except the virginia game which was lost the game will be played on march field and will start at 3 p m a large number of students will accompany the the year's work in gymnasium will be given no man can gradoiate from the university without pass ing this swimming test men may swimi their pool length any day from 4.00 to 6.00 p.m except sat urday the drawing for dormitory rooms will be held saturday may 15 at 1 p.m in drown hall men desiring to hold present quarters for next year must file leases with 10 deposit before that date the lehigh tennis team opened its season on wednesday afternoon by taking every match in the meet against moravian college winning 6to 0 while the matches were not sufficiently close to actually judge the true merit of the lehigh racket men it is evident that a successful schedule will be completed in june in the first match beck easily disposed of hoffman in straight sets 6-2 and 6-1 while the score was not close the match w t as marked by many brilliant plays especially by beck warner was the only lehigh man forced to go three sets with his opponent kemper took the first set 6-3 and was well under way in the second set when warner struck his usual pace and w t on the last two sets 6-3 and 6-2 estes had no trouble in winning over reeves 6-1 6-2 gildersleeve likewise disposed of stocker in straight sets 7-5 and 6-1 in the doubles beck and war ner won over hoffman and kem per 6-2 6-2 estes and gilder sleeve defeated reeves and stocker 6-2 6-3 the next meet will be with ford ham on saturday afternoon on the university courts fordham has a strong tennis team and a gruelling match may be anticipated which will be a real test for the lehigh team playing the poorest game of the season the lehigh baseball team fell before the seton hall nine on wednesday afternon by the score of 5-4 the seton hall players started right in at the beginning and pushed three runs 1 over the plate before the lehigh team 1 could get settled two more runs in the fifth gave them a lead that the brown and white baseballers could not overcome and although they made a hard struggle in the closing innings their rallies fell short and seton hall came out winner seton hall madfe one counter in the first after beck got under o'connor's high foul pfeiffer walked hornack in an effort to catch the runner off the bag dave threw over yap's head and hornack advanced to second then mike wilson let a pitch get away from him and hornack slid safely into third bowe poled a long single to right scoring hor nack and l reached second w r hen timmy donovan messed up wolter'si grounder after j flynn had fliedi out mcgee ended the inning by fanning lehigh failed to get a man on base in her half and seton hall proceeded to add two more coun ters pfeiffer opened by passing d donovan and then fanned n flynn maloney dropped a single in left advancing donovan to second o'connor drove a low single to left which savaria tried to^pick off his shoe-tops but it got away from him and rolled into deep left donovan and maloney both scored and o'connor took second johnny lees was then ushered into the fray and ended further scoring by wiffing hornack and forcing bowe to ground to rote seton hall threatened again in the third but lees pulled himself out of the hole by good pitching j flynn fouled to wfilson and then wolters drew a pass mcgee beat out a hard hit to rote wolters taking second an attempt to catch wolters napping on second allowed both men to advance a peg then johnny put on full speed and fanned donovan andi n flynn after lees had retired the en tire enemy side by the strike-out route in the fourth lehigh broke into the run column with two gone beck walloped a long for the purpose of form ing a lehigh-mercersburg club during the past week coach kanely has whipped into shape a track team that will rival in most every respect the team that rutgers will put on the field to morrow at new brunswick the team has recuperated from the festivities of junior week and buckled down to hard work that is much to their credit there have been several minor changes in the personel of the team although several of the original names are still found on the list of events last wednes day the following events were run and the men who were successful chosen dieffenbaeh and trumbore ran a good race in the 100-yard and will meet the scarlet duet the 220-yard was run too late for pub lication cornell and burgess are still representing the brown and white in the 440 with schwarzback and bray in the 880 in the mile and two mile bray and fancher and carr and ger lach are running respectively sharp and good and sharp and wright are running the 120 high hurdles and 220 low hurdles re spectively sharp is also starring with her rington in the high jump paret and good are representing the best of lehigh in the pole vault the shot and discus are thrown by macgow r an and waltz and the javelin by davenport and mac go wan the broad jump was also held too late for publication no promise can be made as to the outcome of the meet as rutgers is said to have one of the field to morrow at new brunswick the team has recuperated from the festivities of junior week and buckled down to hard work that is much to their credit there have been several minor changes in the personel of the team although several of the original names are still found on the list of events last wednes day the following events were run and the men who were successful chosen dieffenbaeh and trumbore ran a good race in the 100-yard and will meet the scarlet duet the 220-yard was run too late for pub lication cornell and burgess are still representing the brown and white in the 440 with schwarzback and bray in the 880 in the mile and two mile bray and fancher and carr and ger lach are running respectively sharp and good and sharp and wright are running the 120 high hurdles and 220 low hurdles re spectively sharp is also starring with her rington in the high jump paret and good are representing the best of lehigh in the pole vault the shot and discus are thrown by macgow r an and waltz and the javelin by davenport and mac go wan the broad jump was also held too late for publication no promise can be made as to the outcome of the meet as rutgers is said to have one of the
