class meet m b tate 20 issues warning to freshmen who violate rules by thirty yards class of 23 relay team wins rutgers line-up strong both teams undefeated this year battle to be close brown and white will try to avenge last year's defeat rutgers smoker friday night fraternities pledge many first college smoker of the year wrestling bouts to be staged eight pledges in season total of one hundred thirty mr j lovell murray will be the speaker at the next sunday even ing y m c a meeting to be held october 12 at 6:15 o'clock mr murray is educational sec retary of the student volunteer movement he is also an author of many books one of the most re cent and most popular being ' ' call of a world task mr murray has done much traveling and is an interesting speaker he has favor ed us with an address before and therefore will need no introduction to most of us mr h r walters of the class of 1919 will entertain us with a violin solo the popular y m c a orchestra also will entertain with a few selection continued on second page the action of the faculty in elim inating the customary hazing of unruly freshmen this year seems to have caused a spirit of bolshev ism to become apparent in certain members of that class on wednesday october 8 at 12 noon a meeting of the freshman class was held in the auditorium of packer hall for the express pur pose of bringing before the class of 23 examples of the unmanly action of some of its members and attempting if possible to rectify matters at once edward j lapp president of the class of 23 pre sided and opened the meeting by making a few remarks to the effect that unless the attitude taken by tennis tournament well under way a meeting of the lehigh soccer association was held last monday afternoon in the trophy room of the gymnasium fcr the purpose of enrolling new men and electing new officers for the year the meet ing resulted in the election of whitey lewis as captain and e burgess 21 as assistant man ager continued on third page the association voted to accept the schedule presented by manager estes and it has been turned over to the athletic committee for ap proval the complete schedule will be given in the next issue of the lehigh brown and white it will probably include lafayette tomorrow afternoon on taylor field the brown and white eleven will meet the strong rutgers eleven which is looked upon by many sport writers to be one of the best collegiate football teams in the east this year both teams will enter the game undefeated the visitors having scored decisive victories over ur sinus and university of south carolint so far this season and are full of confidence and anxious to repeat their performance of last year on the other hand coach keady's men are equally confident of victory and determined to have revenge the team is in splendid condition for the game and have had a full week of strenuous practice behind closed gates during which time a variety of men plays and shifts which have notjbeen u cp f this year have been perfected special at tention has been paid to the line offensive work and interference which at times was rather ragged in last saturday's contest con siderable stress has been laid on for ward passing and breaking up of the same by the opposing team the second string team using many of rutgers plays went in against the varsity on wednesday with very satisfactory results her rington o hearn and cusick have shown marked improvement in their punting many of the kicks going over sixty-five yards it is more than likely that the same team which started the ursinus game will be sent in tomorrow with this line playing the stellar defensive game they have shown so far this season it is doubtful is rutgers backs will be able to gain consistently by line plunging soccer association arranges season the weather conditions could not have been bette on wednesday for the opening off the lehtgh teimis tournament there are forty men contesting for the university cham pionship and the winner is to re ceive a silver cup as a reward this tournament promises to be the most interesting that lehigh has ever had all four men of last year's tennis team estes hall v wilson and mercur are trying for the championship cup mercur and wilson are in the upper leg while hall and etes are in the lower leg of the tournament the first day's playing resulted in hall defeating c sharp 6-0 6-3 ; stoll defeated stelle 6-2 6-2 ; davenport defeated job 6-2 6-1 and warriner defeated forstall 6-2 6-3 if the good weather con tinues the tournament will be near ing the finals within the next week the opposing men are : beck vs lewis ; gardy vs wilson ; beale vs schoepps stall vs stelle wells vs finke ; warriner vs forstall ; mercur vs mattson knight vs blake straub vs tait the following are the rules gov erning the tournament : : 1 weather permitting the pre liminary matches must be played off within the first two days all first round matches within the next two days etc 2 semi-finals and finals must be played on the university courts near the physics building all other contests may be played wherever the contestants desire continued on second page 3 in case a match has not been played within the specified time limit the contestant who has de layed the match must default to his opponent 4 results of the matches should winner of lehigh university son wil be held saturday october 11 at 8 30 p.m in drown hall v e johnson chairman of the dance committee announced that the jazzland six well known to frequenters of atlantic city as playing in the hotel alamac has been secured last year the college dances were very popular among the students and this year the committee plans to have even better dances every few weeks lehigh band notice the chinese club will hold a meeting on friday october 10 to celebrate the eighth anniversary of the organization at lehigh the unusually large freshman class has resulted in the pledging of more of the director flory is of a very good type and a good first class band is expected the band will play at the football practice thursday afternoon and at the rutgers game this coming satur day continued on second page there have been about fifteen men reporting for practice and a great many others who are held away on account of their rosters a special feature in this new band is the work done by the trombone quartette action upon this needed im provement was taken by the board of trustees at its meeting last fri day contracts were signed by president h s drinker for lehigh university with the contractors benedict birkel for construction f e whitesell for the heating plant and the south bethlehem plumbing co of which r e bur lingame l.u 08 is a partner for the plumbing lighting and other contracts will be awarded later the architect is allen evans of philadelphia who was the architect for drown memorial hall the commons and the coxe mining laboratory feet three stories of sandstone cor responding in architectural design with the main chemical and metal lurgical laboratories which are 219 feet in length by 44 in width with a wing the first floor will house an assaying room for 72 students the second floor an organic labora tory combustion room library and offices on the third floor there will be a quantitative analysis laboratory for 72 students there will be elec trical appliances for all desks a general fan ventilating system for the laboratories and the most up to-date facilities throughout contracts have been signed for the building of a 75,000 extension to the chemistry laboratory of le high university which will give the lehigh chemistry and chemical ei^ineering department an equip ment mio7ig*tn7t)est in the colleges of this country the new facilities will take care of more than 200 students in quantitive analysis assay laboratory and organic labor atory work will be started at once so that the new part of the laboratory will be ready for use next june the extension will be 38 by 60 with the close of the relay race the contests between the classes of 1922 and 1923 were evenly divided the sophomores having won the football game by the score of 6-0 bearing this in mind both baseball teams and their respective rooters went into the baseball game vv lin atspirit to w'li however the team representing the class of 22 was outclassed and swamped under an avalanche of hits nevertheless they fought a splendidly spirited up-hill fight and threatened their opponents severely in the sixth inning but as fate would have it the rally fell short of its mark the scoring was started in the second inning when the freshmen shoved one man across the plate by two clear singles again in the fifth a walk a passed ball and a long sacrifice fly netted one more run for the team representing the class of 23 the game was seem ingly sewed up in the fifth — two hit batsmen a slowly played field er's choice and a quartet of strong singles netted the freshmen five more runs in the sixth all these runs which the freshmen had piled up began to look useless for the first three sophomores up ripped out smash ing screamers but this pace was too fast and could not be main tained and the rally fell short of its mark when two successive bat ters fanned making the second and third outs in the seventh four more runs for the freshmen netted them a total oi eleven the latter half of the seventh was short and snappy — two strikeouts and one pop-up ended the game the features of the game were the batting of gainey 22 the all-around playing of melinker 23
